is there anything significant in why Brian woud sign over the words "Beach Boys" as if saying "no, its not their album - it's my album".
No. Time to trot out the all-time #1 BW signing story (I paraphrase slightly) - he was autographing something for Don Henley, and wrote "To a great musician", started to hand it back... then stopped, crossed out "great" and wrote "good" above. I'm told Henley's face was a picture. That's a great story! Is this Brian's Zen-like humor? Or just a sudden change of heart on which word to use?

I should note, though, I do know a guy who is unwilling even to listen to the Beatles. I don't know why. He used to play bass for me in a band. Very awkward when I'd make a reference I thought was universal (do it like the bass part in [famous Beatles song]." And I'd get a blank stare...
You should've left Beatles albums in his guitar bag or his coat. I once played with a bassist who was fat and never wore deodorant and his B.O was not pleasant... we bought him some deodorant and left it in his bag. God, how cruel. Yet effective! On a side note somewhat now relevant - my B.O always smells awesome and others have agreed. It has moods of its own, you can't say that for cologne! Changes with the time and place and activity, chameleon body smell. Did you know that the devotees and followers of the Prophet Muhammad used to bottle his sweat because it smelled so good? Yep, I'm like him. Sadly, my bassist was not. It's all down to diet, I think, and maybe genetics. He ate a lot of McDonalds...

Brain began his autograph on my bootleg Smile CD by writing "To Rob - Brian" in the white space at the very top. There was then no room left for "Wilson" across the top, so he signed that right under "Brian" and over the top portion of the words "Beach Boys". Brian signed this for me in the early 90's, and at the time I recall being surprised that he gave absolutely no verbal or visual reaction to the fact that he was autographing a CD of Smile.
To Rob - Brian Wilson To rob Brian Wilson A Smile CD, to rob Brian Wilson. Ummm....

Back in my Cigarette days I think I tried one of those. It was pretty good but now I can't stand smoke. I quit more or less in 2001 and the last time I bummed one in 2004 it made me really sick. Tea would have been much better for the boys I agree lol! So does Al Jardine I'm sure.
I dunno about that, MBE - tea stains the teeth!

I bought some new Lapsang Souchong recently.
Taylors of Harrogate brand. I like it. Different emphasis on the flavor - less smoky, more of the rich taste. Twinings is more smoky, less of the rich taste. It's like the difference between cigarettes with all the additives in them and additive free cigarettes (Twinings would be the cigs with the chemical additives - Taylors would be the straight tobacco).

The Beatles are so ingrained in our collective mind that it's hard not to love them - their story probably means more to the average person than Jesus' story. The breakup of the Beatles carries more weight than the crucifixion of Jesus. People stand over the Lennon memorial thing in Central Park like it's Jesus' tomb. When you go there - the atmosphere is religious. "Imagine" is played everywhere and unquestioned, taken as a prophetic message of truth. People get somber when it comes on, they get introverted and contemplative, they repeat the lyrics like ancient wisdom.
When George Harrison died, I was in school still, and they announced it over the intercom and we had a few minutes of silence.
Personally I think it's mass hysteria. The results of a massively successful marketing scheme. If the Beatles were a religion, most of the world would probably be Beatle.

I don't care that much if they do an album together. There would be too many suits calling the shots for a nice, commercial product. It wouldn't be a Paul & Brian album, it would be a LEGENDARY PAUL MCCARTNEY OF THE BEATLES and LEGENDARY BRIAN WILSON OF THE BEACH BOYS album. They'd force them into TV spots, tours, benefit concerts... so much crap.
It would probably be good for car commercials but not for our collections.

on the subject of cigarettes...
i've never been a smoker of tobacco but tonight i had an American Spirit cigarette, it was pretty good compared to other brands i've tried...nice tasting tobacco, great mellow buzz, and 'smooth' smoke on the throat, but it has absolutely stunk up my room!
what a pervasive, ugly stench it leaves! yucky!
my body is so sensitive these days, i feel everything so strongly, so i can feel so much noise in this organism from just one cigarette.
i really don't enjoy having anything in my system that causes a significant change these days... the most daring i get is TEA which i take with ritualistic seriousness
my new, beautiful yixing clay mug has become my 'piece' with just as much emotional attachment and tea is sobering
this this this, a thousand times THIS
if only the Beach Boys preferred tea...

What's the deal with Just Like Me And You? A Brian Wilson original? I like it a lot more than Message Man. It actually sounds like something Brian would've done around 1965-1966. And why, on that website, does it show up as TLOS when clicked and played? It's confusing.

Yeah, around 1:00 min you can hear someone saying "Beach Boys"
Still I wonder how much it was influenced by the "Pet sounds"-era stuff or the WH/Friends-style
Sounds more Today/Pet Sounds to me than WH/Friends (neither of which really have ballad-like songs like this). Besides, around 1:30 when Paul is doing percussive noises with his mouth, it has a very Brian Wilson feel to it, like the drums on IJWMFTT, and then Paul's low voice sounds like he's hearing Mike Love or Dennis in his head.

this discussion kind of makes me sad that late 60s paul and late 60s brian didnt team up and do an entire album together or something. imagine: paul and linda, brian and marilyn, the beach boys' voices and musical talents... that wouldve been great brian and paul alternating piano/bass duties and vocals, smoking lots of paul's grass, marilyn and linda on kitchen duties...

i remember reading in 'the Beatles Unreleased' book that PM's Back Seat of my Car was a very BW like song...and I agree
Paul brought that song to the "Get Back" sessions and the other Beatles commented that it had a very "Beach Boys vibe" to it. They were planning to work on it but never got around to it. I've heard the bootlegs of Paul performing a rough version of the song on piano, presumably during those very same sessions, and it TOTALLY sounds like a Brian Wilson song, even moreso than the finished version that appeared on RAM. Thanks to YouTube, you can judge for yourselves: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcDXTNHmO8w&feature=relatedyeah, it sounds like he sat around listening to IJWMFTT for a few hours before writing it.

Oh, wow, people are stupid and lack individuality so they follow the movements of the herd - shocking news.
Thank god for groundbreaking research like this that our scientists are doing. Truly making earth a better place to live.
Hey, I only posted it because I see evidence of this on message boards like SS. Levels of cynicism and obnoxiousness are also influenced by social networks... You're totally right. Hey, what kind of music do you listen to? Because that's my favorite type of music too.

maybe it was just playing in the background of a scene and you didnt notice it?
i saw that one movie with adam sandler and drew barrymore where "wouldnt it be nice" was featured a few times.
the end, where hes on the boat and he puts on the album and wails along to wibn is classic, something all of us have probably done, when the beach boys' buoyant cheerfulness sounds like the saddest thing in the world
