For whatever it's worth, the song and the video capture the bright and dark sides of the 60's, of which there were many. It's a pop song, not meant to be the subject of a college lecture on the tumultuous 60's. The video is pretty good, for what it purports to be. It has a lot of interesting images.

1. Carnegie Hall,
2. the UN Concert, the one Marlon Brando was at in 68 or 69?,
3. the 1969 concert in London that became an album,
4. Not Monterrey Pop, but the festival they played at because they didn't play Monterrey Pop,
5. the Whiskey A Go Go,
6. the concert in Minnesota early in their careers, the one where Mike said cars were lined up for a long distance to get to where they were playing,
7. one of the concerts with the Maharishi, the tour that was eventually cancelled,
8. the outdoor concert in England, where Elton John was playing keyboard,
9. an early concert in 64, with Brian fully engaged on stage,
10. the concert in Prague during the communist era.

I think Steve Levine would not embarrass Brian Wilson. If you listen to Brian sing the very end of Getcha Back, you hear the very real and ragged singing voice of Brian Wilson at that time. There is no way the guy that sang that part of the song sang the falsetto.

Yes, the reviewer had a chip on his shoulder towards people from suburbia. I wonder why. I was one of those people from suburbia who attended multiple Beach Boys concerts in New York and New Jersey and loved every minute of it. Even with all of the personal issues that some of the band members had, for 90+ minutes I heard songs that I loved played reasonably close to the originals. It was a time of great joy for me as I immersed myself in the California sound. Judging by the way the other people reacted at the concerts I attended, I wasn't alone in my feeling.

I read Donovan's autobiography and he does mention Mr. Love, apparently they were friendly, but they don't come off as close friends. Donovan, who was close with the Beatles, did a lot of drugs for a while. His drug use would not have been compatible with Mike Love's lifestyle.
