Marie Callender's is a little bit better than Denny's.

For whatever it's worth, the song and the video capture the bright and dark sides of the 60's, of which there were many.  It's a pop song, not meant to be the subject of a college lecture on the tumultuous 60's.  The video is pretty good, for what it purports to be.  It has a lot of interesting images.

If Mike has mellowed, I wonder if there will be one last reunion concert.

1.  Carnegie Hall,

2.  the UN Concert, the one Marlon Brando was at in 68 or 69?,

3.   the 1969 concert in London that became an album,

4.   Not Monterrey Pop, but the festival they played at because they didn't play Monterrey Pop,

5.   the Whiskey A Go Go,

6.    the concert in Minnesota early in their careers, the one where Mike said cars were lined up for a long distance to get to where they were playing,

7.     one of the concerts with the Maharishi, the tour that was eventually cancelled,

8.     the outdoor concert in England, where Elton John was playing keyboard,

9.     an early concert in 64, with Brian fully engaged on stage,

10.    the concert in Prague during the communist era.

Who was the special guest?

I saw Brian perform with the Beach Boys in 1978 or 1979 at Rockland Community College in New York.  He spent the entire concert behind a piano smoking a cigarette.  I don't think he ever took a lead vocal.

The irony is that the cover photo for Almost Summer was taken in front of the Beverly Hills Hotel.  Within a year before or after, I can't remember exactly, the Eagles had their album Hotel California with a cover photo of the Beverly Hills Hotel.  Both cover photos were quite good.

I remember reading some interview where Mike said the group had sessions with a psychiatrist because of issues with Al, in an effort to work it out.

I think Steve Levine would not embarrass Brian Wilson.  If you listen to Brian sing the very end of Getcha Back, you hear the very real and ragged singing voice of Brian Wilson at that time.  There is no way the guy that sang that part of the song sang the falsetto.
35  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Last Beach Boys song you heard on the radio on: April 15, 2019, 12:35:53 PM
The oldies stations that played 60's music in Los Angeles don't exist anymore.  It's all 80's on up.
36  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thrasher Magazine Reviews The Beach Boys' July 13, 1982 Concert on: April 08, 2019, 12:36:59 PM
Yes, the reviewer had a chip on his shoulder towards people from suburbia.  I wonder why.  I was one of those people from suburbia who attended multiple Beach Boys concerts in New York and New Jersey and loved every minute of it.  Even with all of the personal issues that some of the band members had, for 90+ minutes I heard songs that I loved played reasonably close to the originals.  It was a time of great joy for me as I immersed myself in the California sound.  Judging by the way the other people reacted at the concerts I attended, I wasn't alone in my feeling.

What's so different about it on CD?  Did you buy the CD from Amazon?
38  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Challenge: Combine MIU and LA into a single cohesive classic LP on: March 25, 2019, 12:39:34 PM
I think the inclusion of a polished version of California Feeling would have substantially improved either MIU or L.A. Light.  She's Got Rhythm, Wontcha Come Out Tonight, Hey Little Tomboy and especially Shortenin Bread should have never made it onto a regular album, but maybe a rarities collection.  No one in their right mind would name an album MIU.

They could have found a better picture of the older Brian at the control panel.

Is this the Quentin Tarantino film?

And Spirit of America.

One of their greatest hits albums would have become big on the charts again as the mood of the country shifted in the 1970's and the younger generation embraced the music of the group.

Asked Marilyn about it?  Wouldn't that be more than a little bit awkward.

I read Donovan's autobiography and he does mention Mr. Love, apparently they were friendly, but they don't come off as close friends.  Donovan, who was close with the Beatles, did a lot of drugs for a while.  His drug use would not have been compatible with Mike Love's lifestyle.

The Beach Boys in the 80's needed to bring a creative person into their orbit, someone who could write new songs and preferably help produce them.

60th anniversary?  If they wait that long they might lose one of their members.
48  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: California Calling on: February 25, 2019, 12:16:19 PM
I'm not a fan of how Mike Love sang on it, somewhat similar to what he did on It's A Beautiful Day.

What a life those guys had in their 20s, traveling around Europe, living at the top and having women lined up to meet them.  Take a look at the difference in appearance in Mike Love when he visited London in 68 as compared to 69.

I had a very negative view of Mike Love and his lawsuit and all that, but his book lays out quite clearly his side of things.  There is no question, that Brian Wilson, through his father and attorneys, gave Mike the shaft and his case had merit.
