Reminds me that Tom Petty wrote something for the liner notes for the album Holland.

I like Sunflower but there's no song on the album that would have been a hit on am radio during that time.  There should have been a song on the album called Sunflower.

It's OK would have benefited from a sit up and take notice intro, something like the intro to Surfin USA.  I've heard the intro on the version on MIC, which sounds like something you'd expect to hear on a video game, which was a dud of an intro.  The background vocals could have had a fuller sound, but it was a great summer pop song in 1976.

Didn't Al mention in a number of interviews, pre-covid, that there were going to be reunion shows?

I was at the 11/24/1976 show at Madison Square Garden and I remember Brian not doing much, but wore a fancy robe.

Aren't You Glad is a pleasant song, but it shows that BW had lost some of his ability to make a hit single.
7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Endless Harmony, The Song on: July 20, 2020, 12:37:38 PM
I love Johnny Carson, but I am also a big fan of Endless Harmony.  The lyrics aren't the greatest, but they are adequate, and their limitations are more than made up for by the soaring vocals.
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Endless Harmony, The Song on: July 17, 2020, 01:06:28 PM
The second half of this song which starts with "And we sing God bless America..." is one of those magical Beach Boys moments.  A tremendous minute and a half of soaring Beach Boys' vocals.  I was wondering if this song, in particular, the second half of it, has ever been used as background music for any scenes in films or television shows?
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why are BB albums so short? on: May 19, 2020, 12:20:04 PM
I remember that Mike Love said that Brian went downhill after Heroes and Villains, his productions were never the same after that.  The drugs were taking him over and his ability to write and produce were compromised.

How did Chuck Berry get all the rights to Surfin USA if he didn't write any of the lyrics?

Right on the money.  Big Sur, while beautiful, is an out of the way place.

The same Chuck Berry that snubbed Brian Wilson when he came up and said hello to him.
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Best of 1968: White Album or Friends on: February 04, 2020, 12:10:10 PM
I'd choose the White Album, even though I like Friends.  Friends shows the drop-off in Brian Wilson's ability to write and produce great pop music.

They played at Reagan's inaugural in January, 1981.  I was there.

I remember that when Gerald Ford was president, the Beach Boys played at the White House for his daughter Susan's birthday, in the mid-1970's.

I know it was a long time ago, but why did Wings break up?

In Mike's book he discusses how Brian's lawyers came to him for help when Brian was suing to get back the rights to the Beach Boys' songs or damages for the rights his father improperly sold.  Supposedly the lawyers told Mike he would be given compensation for his share.  Brian's lawsuit was not as successful as it was represented to Mike in the beginning, but Brian did get a substantial payment.  Mike was stiffed again, as none of the recovery from the lawsuit was shared with him.  This was in the 90's.

I understand Mike's complaints and bitterness over the publishing rights to an extent, but it was so long ago and he has made so much money since then, that he has long since passed the point to let it go.  When asked about his great career, I would expect him to talk about the time they had their first hit, their first number one, being mobbed by fans wherever they went for years her and overseas, the heights reached with Good Vibrations, playing the UN show in Paris and hanging out with Marlon Brando, playing at the Washington Monument before 500,000 fans, etc.  I would not have expected the song rights to come up, which he should not have brought up, but I think the way he was torched in the media when he cancelled the continuation of the reunion, might have something to do with it.

How about Mike's stage attire in the late 60's when they played in London and he was dressed like some kind of biblical prophet or TM prophet with the white sort of jumpsuit.  I am amazed the band tolerated it.  He was out of sync with the times.
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Sums Up Life in 3 Minutes on PBS - Does he mention songwriting credits? on: January 10, 2020, 12:07:30 PM
I was really surprised that Mike gets to summarize his career and all the amazing things he experienced being a pop superstar and he brings up ..... a songwriting credit lawsuit.  If that's what he feels is one of the most significant things to him, so be it, but it diminishes him to bring up complaints he had in the past.  I agree about the whole TM thing and his inability to move beyond his grievances.  I wish someone would ask him a serious question about it, why hasn't TM helped him on this issue.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / When Did the Beach Boys' Cheerleaders End? on: January 07, 2020, 12:27:46 PM
I know this was Mike's idea, and he bragged about it in the Goldmine interview, but mercifully it ended when and why?
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who Produced Susie Cincinatti? on: January 06, 2020, 12:24:27 PM
As to John Belushi, who doesn't like a song that rocks about a cigarette smoking female cab driver that goes zooming around Cincinatti and gives out free rides?  Nice change from the typical subjects of lyrics.
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Johnny Carson, track from Love You on: December 17, 2019, 12:52:19 PM
The beginning of the song is rough.  I can see how it would turn a lot of people off.  I would love for someone to ask Brian or Mike about that part of the song and why it was recorded that way.  However, the part apparently sung by Carl is great and the ending section of the song, where Mike sings lead, is pretty cool.  Mike Love's singing at the end of the song "Whose a man that we admire..." is as good as anything he sang in the 1970's, an excellent vocal.  It drives me crazy that Mike sang so good on Johnny Carson but has that horrible style of vocal on It's A Beautify Day, also a 1970's track.
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Johnny Carson, track from Love You on: December 16, 2019, 12:36:59 PM
I really like this song, it has some rocking sections.  The part where the song changes from Mike singing ever so slowly "he sits behind his microphone, band then sings John-ny Carson, then eventually goes "Ed McMahon comes on and says here's Johnny, every night at 11:30 he's so party..."  Is that Mike or Carl singing that part?
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Who Produced Susie Cincinatti? on: December 05, 2019, 03:54:24 PM
I like the song, it's got energy and great backing vocals.
