Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Ode to Bobbie Gentry: The music and mystery of a Mississippi Delta Queen

Insightful commentary John K & JakeH and most welcome. All of the Beach Boys must have known Bobbie G at least in passing as they shared the concert bill in Honolulu--and possibly other dates--and were all on Capitol Records. Would like to learn more about the group's association with the raven-haired bombshell.
Depends on what day you ask me, but "Fancy" is my favorite Bobbie G tune....no idea why it failed to reach the Billboard Pop Top 30, stalling just shy at No. 31 after its November 22, 1969 chart debut. Nevertheless, it remained on the pop chart for 14 weeks, the same duration as "Ode to Billie Joe" [a No. 1 hit single for four weeks].

Posted by David on Facebook at approximately 3:30 PM Eastern today.... "Thank you for all the love and prayers, it was very overwhelming, I am very grateful for my friends, family and fans for your support, it really means a lot to me. My extended Beach Boys family especially came through for me and I was blown away by all the love! "Some of you may be wondering what all the fuss is about? Well, I had a boner lasting more than 4 hours so I had to go the emergency room. Just kidding. In the dark hours of Friday morning, I had a close call with my heart but I was fortunate enough get to the ER within a few minutes of the onset of the crippling chest pain and I was given treatment and medication right away that prevented a serious heart attack. In spite of my low weight, not eating meat and having low blood pressure and normal cholesterol levels only six months ago, I had a genetic condition passed on from my father and Pappy Marks. Everything was fixed with an angioplasty and a few stents so I should be feeling even better than before very soon. "I am especially thankful to the ER staff at St Joseph’s Emergency Room in Burbank for saving my life by stopping this idiot from ripping out his own IV out so he could go play a show! It’s very possible I wouldn’t be here if they hadn’t convinced me to stay and get treatment even though I was being an asshole and they probably wanted me out the door. The good news is that I should have loads more energy as soon I recover from the initial trauma and I’m looking forward to getting back on the road asap! Thank you again for all the good thoughts! Love, David" https://www.facebook.com/DavidMarksOfficial

I managed to collect a few cuttings (my Dad was a newsagent, so backcopies were easy enough to come by)… still have them.
John Manning, if you can scan & upload them sometime, I for one would love to read any of those Dennis cuttings that you have in your collection. Thank you for the remembrance.

Al Jardine posted the following lovely message on his Facebook along with a video of Dennis performing "Forever" at Central Park in 1971:
"I'd like to honor Dennis Wilson and my brother, Neal Jardine, who share the same birthday today. These two influenced my life in very different, but incredible ways. My brother helped inspired me by paving the way for me to succeed in my secondary education. He set an example for me simply by being there. It's always nice to have a senior classman brother to look out after you in the proving grounds of High School. His friends were my friends and I took great comfort in that. Dennis welcomed me back into the band after I left to finish my undergrad work. I felt I had to finish what I started, and he supported that. He was a free spirit and took no guff from anyone. He was a 'straight shooter' and you better get out of the way when he started shooting. He wasn't always right, but I liked that. I'd rather know how I stand with someone, than not. Happy Birthday guys, Al."

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Ths BBs played w/ Ray Stevens in '63,,,

I interviewed Ray Stevens as well as his primary songwriting partner, Buddy Kalb, in a multi-installment feature when I first started my journalism career several years ago. My first interview that I scored on Twitter. I've been meaning to give it a new re-edit and rewrite the introduction. Practice makes perfect, and my writing has significantly improved in the interim. I must do that before the year is over. I'm not a fan of Ray's 21st century pandering to the right wing & Fox News, but his innovative '60s & early '70s work, which doesn't have an agenda, deserves your attention. Ray could stack vocals effortlessly, create sound effects & voices, play sterling piano and multiple instruments, write, produce, and effectively convey multiple musical genres -- i.e country, soul, R&B, gospel, rock, pop, and novelty. He had both a serious and fun side -- sometimes to the detriment of his artistic merit, the latter received greater airplay. He has a recently released memoir out -- "Ray Stevens' Nashville." If I speak with him again, I'll ask him about his shows with the Beach Boys. Many thanks for the thread, Kook Adams. http://www.examiner.com/article/ray-stevens-still-trying-to-figure-out-what-he-s-gonna-do-when-he-grows-upStill Trying to Figure Out What He's Gonna Do When He Grows Up: In Step with Ray Stevens

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl Wilson - Extended Interview 1984

Other than the interviewer taking what seemed like an hour to ask one question, I really enjoyed the conversation and thanks for posting the link. Carl put a lot of thought into his answers. I didn't detect any canned responses. Plus, it's always nice to hear Carl discuss other icons like Elvis, Bob Dylan & John Fogerty and his songwriting contributions to the Surf's Up album. When the interviewer asked Carl about Student Demonstration Time, all I can say is -- Carl gave a very diplomatic reply!

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread!

Hi all,
I have a question pertaining to three tracks first released on the 1993 Good Vibrations box set that I hope someone can shed light upon. Does anyone have the exact (or as close as possible) recording dates for the following? Many thanks!
1. Surfin’ USA (demo version with Brian banging away on piano; according to Bellagio, the master was recorded on January 5, 1963) 2. In My Room (demo version with full band; the master was recorded in July 1963) 3. Little Surfer Girl (30-second unfinished Brian song)
1 - logic dictates late December 1962. But when did logic ever apply to The Beach Boys ?
2 - given the touring they were doing summer 1963, my best guess would be (if not during the Surfer Girl sessions of god-only-knows-when, July), then maybe June 13th-ish, or even late May. Candidly, I have no idea.
3 - recorded when Brian was rooming with Bob Norberg. Viki Korcher remembers it, so anywhere between fall 1962 and summer 1963.
Exactly...logic rarely applies to the boys' studio or live recordings. Every little kernel of knowledge helps. Thanks so much for your invaluable assistance, Andrew.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Problem Child is criminally underrated

Lately I've been scouring the Beach Boys' discography and creating my very own master playlist in iTunes of their songs that didn't appear on a BB's studio album. I have checked both iTunes and Amazon for a digital copy of Problem Child (either the single or album version) but have had no luck. Does anyone know when the song last appeared on a compilation or album? I'd love to obtain the best-sounding MP3 of Problem Child if anyone can help. Thanks.

Diaphanous Moiety, John Manning, Mr. Wilson, and Help Me Shady: Your approval is definitely appreciated regarding the "Like Heat From a Blast Furnace..." DW article. I plan on doing many more Beach Boys features as my career advances, hopefully with my very own retro pop culture news website by 2015!
