I agree that these aren't necessarily "dirges" but man, "Steamboat" to me is the very definition of a dirge. It just frickin' crawls. Everybody has one song where they can't understand the love others have for it, "Steamboat" is it for me.
Gonna be an interesting tape! Sounds like a good theme. I'm not quite locked into the idea enough to offer a good suggestion though.
Steamboat was the slowest grower for me in the entire released BB catalog. I first heard it maybe around 1994 or so, didn't understand it. I think it finally clicked for me around 2011 or so. Now I love it. Steamboat's incredible. Evocative, dreamy, trance-like, industrial… give me another 20 like it! +1 If a factory would dream, this is what it would sound like.

So Carl sings an early version of GV, including the high note of the verses ("Iiii" and ""weeeeird") in full voice, but than can't sing the same note in the released version? Also, before debuting the song in Ann Arbor, Brian flies out to teach Carl sing the high note, which he apparently could sing earlier that year? I'm confused.

I was just wondering today what everyone's ranges are (I mean specific notes, not just that Mike's bass, Bruce is tenor, etc). I DID hit the search feature for "vocal range", but got a lot of results with the words "vocal", "arrangement", "strange", and "orange". Probably buried deeply in there was the result I wanted, but that's a lot of looking.
I just updated my post in this thread: http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,16821.0.htmlNice! When/where/how did you come to the conclusion that it is Bruce and not Carl singing the Surf's Up A5? It honestly just seems a bit more plausible to me that Bruce would have sang it, since there is a confirmed instance of him singing in that range (Mission Pak), but not really any such example for Carl. What really convinced me, though, was a post by someone from The Fendertones about their cover of Surf's Up. They said that Bruce sang the same soprano "domino" part on the cover as he did on the original, which of course implies he sang it. I can't find that post now though unfortunately. Wait wait, Bruce sang an A5, like, earlier this year? At age 73?? That's astounding.

Man I forgot about "Good Music," the Joan Jett-Beach Boys collaboration from '86. What a cool record.
That's a good one! I was really into JJ before I discovered the BB and loved this song from the start without having heard about the Beach Boys. Kenny Laguna tells a cool story about the recording too.

I’m trying to recall the details of the “She Believes…” re-make that were mentioned back then. My vague recollection is that I got the impression that they used Bruce’s original 1985 lead vocal track, then had Foskett re-sing Carl’s lines (if they’re using 1985 vocal tracks, why not just keep Carl’s then?), and then re-recorded the backing and presumably added new group backing vocals.
I recall the mention of the song elicited mostly groans from fans back in 2012, considering we had been waiting 20 years for *new* BB music. I figured part of the reason (beyond the obvious, that it was a remake of a song they had already released) the track may have been dropped from consideration is that it featured a non-BB on prominent lead vocals. Obviously, Jeff was prominent throughout the album on harmonies and even some solo lines here and there. But nothing as out-front prominent as singing all the choruses to “She Believes…”
The backing track heard in the “Doin’ It Again” documentary is indeed different. I’m not sure how anyone determined this, but at some point someone claimed or deduced it was a track called “I’d Go Anywhere” (or “I’ll Go Anywhere”). It certainly sounds interesting (certainly moreso than a remake of a 1985 track).
I asked Bruce during the C50 tour about the lead vocals and he said that he himself sang the entire song, including Carl's part.
