76  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Ramones Influenced by the Beach Boys on: January 23, 2015, 06:55:40 PM
*giggle* if you can't hear it, I don't know what to tell you. I hear The Beach Boys all over several of The Ramones' songs. I started to list some examples, but there are literally way too many to list. "Rock 'n' Roll High School", the single version, might be a good starting point, but it's present on so many of their songs.

AC/DC - Back in Black. One of the most perfect rock albums ever made.

I would say 3 of the songs are truly great, while the other 7 passable, but rather faceless. But hey, I realize I'm in minority here.

Much more a fan of the Bon Scott era, but there's a lot of good stuff with Brian Johnson, too. There are only a two or three tracks on Back In Black which I'm kinda take-it-or-leave-it on. I guess, for me, that would exclude it from being "perfect", but it's still pretty nice.

can you guys please stop bumping newguy threads

please
Bit of a naive question perhaps but what's the problem with newguy? Did he misbehave?
No, john, runners meant the opposite, as in he doesn't want to see any newguy topic bumped coz he misses him. Y'know, good times reminder. He said that before when another poster replied in a Newguy thread.
And no, in compare with some other posters, Newguy wasn't bad, just happened to make a lotta threads at a time, which annoyed everyone & their bro. But he was nice if you talk to him nice.

Naw, guy drove me fuckin' apewaste. I hate to be mean, I wouldn't say this if he were still around, but sheesh. Just... a lot of aimless negativity coupled with... well, I'm not gonna be mean. Cry
79  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: THE BEACH BOYS 1964 KEEP AN EYE ON SUMMER (follow up to The Big Beat 1963) on: January 23, 2015, 08:50:06 AM
Awright, I've recieved two songs in Apple lossless format (which I promptly deleted after doing these tests). Based on what I'm seeing, they're almost certainly lossless and not transcodes. Here are some examples:

Using my semi-ancient recording software, there's a "Frequency Analysis" tool. I can't claim to know everything about it, but I know enough to generally know what it is and how to use it in terms of identifying lossy/lossless files. Here's what it shows at the one minute mark of "The Big Beat" on the retail lossless version:

Here's the one minute mark of the original retail 320kbps MP3 of "The Big Beat":

If you look to the right on the image, you'll see a sharp dip that is not present on the lossless version - this shows the frequencies that are missing on the lossy version. As you go below 320kbps or a high quality variable bitrate MP3 (which I prefer to 320kbps) - say, 128kbps (the effects of which can be seen here on the same song/same time, for those who are curious) or 192kbps, the "dip" goes further to the left as more frequencies are lopped off. The rest of it looks subtly different between these two images too, but this is due to the frequencies being different than the lossless version. The "dip" I mentioned is the biggest indicator, though.

When I align the files with one another and then invert the lossless version, there's no phasing, only a bit of sound that accounts for the frequency loss on the lossy version, thus confirming that the 320kbps version and the lossless version used the exact same source files.

Here's the frequency analysis on "Mother May I" at the thirty second minute mark, retail lossless version:

And the 320kbps retail lossy version at the thirty second mark, sold in 2013:

You'll again see that, on the right side of the image, there are frequencies missing in the lossy version that are not missing on the lossless version.

From what I can gather, the lossless version of the album is indeed lossless and not just a transcode of the album taken from iTunes or something. I can't say for sure about the Live In Sacramento or the Keep An Eye On Summer albums, but I'd take The Big Beat 1963 appearing to be lossless as a good sign for both releases. Very glad to say so, as I was worried about this because occasionally, lossy files ARE sold as lossless, and the advancement of high quality audio kind of takes a kick to the groin when that sort of thing happens as it can kind of deter folks from purchasing these albums.

So yeah. *thumbs up symbol from MSN*

There's a flac* version of Live From Sacramento up on Pono music right now (US only - which they forget to tell you til you reach checkout  Roll Eyes ) *well it says it is.

https://ponomusic.force.com/ccrz__CCPage?pageKey=product&oId=of%3A5b1ad32586d040ecb41e85e319191d5e&type=Album&artistId=of%3A23503756b6354a23be87384632a4609d

Still only 44.1kHz/16 bit. Which may not be noticeably better than the mp3 version, based on what Rob (Custom Machine) says above...

44.1kHz/16 bit lossless would be CD quality, i.e. above that of MP3.

I had no idea there was a website for this sort of thing, I check the files manually with my recording software, and it's almost always obvious if something is lossy or not. If someone wanted to send me one track or even a 30 second sample of a couple songs or something...

(I'm not buying until I can be sure, by the way, but if I can verify it's legit? fukk yeh d00d)

By Crackey, I'm going to have to run right out and get me a Pono player!!

Hey.

You don't need a Pono player to buy this, Chuckie.

"Hate" the Eagles?  Man!!!  That ain't gonna vaildate this thread.  That particular song...OK...but "Hate" Don...and the Eagles?  Get over it.

Haha, I don't know, man. Once in a while, especially recently, I find myself hearing or recalling some totally lame "classic rawk" song or some fairly atrocious 80s cheesefest (that's coming from someone posting on a Beach Boys messageboard), wonder who it is, Google the lyrics and I'd say over 50% of the time, it's either The Eagles or an Eagles solo project. Usually Don Henley, who also seems to like himself a bit too much, thus further distaste.

Sorry, if you get something good out of their work, I'm sincerely glad and think no less of you at all, but they're just... not for me. Cry

I really, really like the song The Boys of Summer. There, I said it.

That "You got yuh HEH combed back!" line may be my least favorite moment in music history, but I find the rest of the song to be sorta enjoyable.

P.S. I hate Don Henley and I hate The Eagles.

I think we have at least 500 different stereo mixes of "Why Do Fools" and about 300 mono mixes now, right? Pretty close.

When I'm behind the wheel
Horses of gas and steel

I think you've got it. This line is tricky. I could look up the lyrics, but stuff like "Horse in a capsule! Yeeeyeeuh" or "Horses and cats and deer!" is more fun to believe in.

when I'm behind the female
put on some rubber and steel
my highway is my home
where we smoke rope, we smoke rope, we smoke rope
go and steal a fancy car
hide it out side your yard
my wife is full of possibilities
In my car I'm a bastard of my destiny
In my car car hey pretty lady come cruise with me
come for a ride, feel you inside, feel you inside
I'm master of my bates
when I accelerate
put her in over drive
(some french wording that I can't understand)
ride ride ride pretty mama now ride ride
ride to the atmosphere
rave rave rave pretty mama
now rave rave come to the back seat, cone to the back seat
with me..
when I feel the beer spill
I steal from the millionaires
radio blasting Devo
we'll turn the radio on..

Or maybe you've got it. Or maybe I just wish these were the real lyrics.

Are you sure the Qubuz version is from a lossless SOURCE, though, or is it possible it could be the MP3s/Apple versions just converted into a lossless format?

Doubtful - this is a legitimate site. I guess I can't absoultely verify 100%, but basically, all retailers get the same source files, but Apple/Amazon etc. then encode them to lossy later.

I just ran out of Christmas money, too. Cry Ah well, just glad this is being posted now instead of a year after initial release like The Big Beat 1963.

Does Student Demo Station Time count?

Would have been a much better name for the aborted Beach Boys Central site.
94  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: Darro thread pulled ? on: January 20, 2015, 11:39:04 AM
Looks like Darro has - most conveniently - forgotten that he's claimed Brian never wrote any of his own lyrics. Those lyrics are unquestionably Mike's, just as the other set is unquestionably Tony's. I call bull, and sh*t.

Oh, and it's Audree, btw.

So yer tellin' me Mike wrote a song about how he found his aunt Audree to be rather saucy?

(I'm just sayin'! I have no idea what to make of Darro and am honestly bored by most of this brand of drama, I just found this to be kinda funny.)
95  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Demo Thread on: January 20, 2015, 10:42:52 AM
Does the "Lookin' At Tomorrow" demo circulate? I don't recall ever coming across it, but then I'm sure I don't have "everything" there is out there to be found.
96  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Demo Thread on: January 20, 2015, 09:23:16 AM
The Pet Sounds piano demo thread kinda made me think....what demos are there known to exist or at least have existed at one time?? Here's what I've been able to come up with, based on what's been released legitimately, stuff that I'm told *cough* is on bootlegs, things that may have circulated among insiders, things that have been written about in books, etc.:

Surfin' - several home demos/rehearsals
Luau - home demo/rehearsal
Surfin' USA - two home demos
Thank Him For Our Love - depending on whose story you believe, either Brian and Carl or Brian and Bob Norberg
Little Deuce Coupe - home demo
Dance, Dance, Dance - studio demo with the full band
Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) - Brian at the piano
A Time To Live In Dreams - Dennis at the piano
Surf's Up - two different demos Brian recorded/filmed for Inside Pop
Rendezvous - demo for "Do It Again"
Be With Me - Dennis at the piano
Sail Plane Song
Sail On, Sailor - the "Hypnotize me, Van Dyke!" tape (has it been confirmed that this still exists?)

The "Dance, Dance, Dance" version is an alternate, not a demo, I'm pretty sure.

Also, I don't think the Wild Honey "Surf's Up" was a demo, nor is the Inside Pop version. Mr. Doe stated that even the '66 piano/vocal recording is not a demo, but I'm not sure what the purpose of the recording was. Granted it was recorded about a month after section one of "Surf's Up" was put down, but still.

In the form of formal letter:

Dear runnersdialzero,

this is a BBs topic; you should have posted it on a thread called "Misheard vocals" (author=Disney Boy (1985)): http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,12527.0.html

It doesn't belong to the Sandbox area. Thank you for attention.

Sincerely,
RangeRoverA1

I'm 1000% certain it would have just been moved here quickly, regardless. Cry

99  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SIP Could Have Sold Much Better As Is on: January 19, 2015, 07:56:43 AM
Mike talked about it back in '93 - he said it would follow on the title track of SIP, with songs about the environment, kind of a latter day "Surf's Up". I have no idea if it ever got past the talking phase, but imagine that musically, it would've sounded like SIP Vol. 2.

Wait, "Surf's Up" is "about the environment"? Are you saying this or did Mike?  Huh Huh Huh
