Another interesting point is that during the C50 press junket, they discuss this song and the Spanish part and Al says he has absolutely zero recollection of it, even accusing the group of putting him on right there about it.  After pledging their honesty, he still doesn't remember anything about it.

That would be the same Alan Jardine who, during an interview about his solo album, not only insisted "Highway" was unreleased but also denied singing the lead vocal ?

'kay...

Man, don't dismiss everything the guy says based on one thing he got wrong. You record like 50,000 songs in the span of 15 years in the middle of touring and writing and trying not to strangle your bandmates etc. etc. etc. and try to keep it all straight. Cry

Shelter's okay.  I guess they used Foskett so the chorus is in a falsetto.  Nothing wrong with that on a Beach Boys song, and who else is gonna sing it?

Anyone else, please. It basically renders the song unlistenable, to me. I'm sure some will say that sounds dramatic or far-fetched, but sorry, I only mean it literally - I do not like Jeff's voice at all and I don't want to listen to it, that's all. The songwriting itself is pretty decent, and I like Brian's concept behind the lyrics, but I can't listen to it.

One could argue that the "Banana & Louie" outro to the Pet Sounds album was a hidden track.

With the exception of the vapid crooning and inane lyrics of DOTO, TWGMTR would seem to be a natural fit for any BB collection if only for the last three tracks.

"Daybreak" isn't even the worst song on the album.

Uh, yes it is. Labeling it as obligatory filler would be far too generous and complimentary for something as insipidly boring as that particular attempt at a song.

I met the band in 2012 and they told me "Beaches In Mind" was specifically written for a Viagra commercial. Don't tell anyone else, though.

Isn't that the whole point?

"Little Surfer Girl" came up on random yesterday. At the start, Brian says...

"On the playback, Bob, I want piano and bass!"

So bossy! Did a young Brian Wilson expect Bob to just make bass and piano tracks appear via magic when Brian heard it back after doing the vocal? what is it

I believe the story is that this snippet was found on one track of a multitrack that had been recorded over,.  I've always interpreted this to mean that Brian wanted to hear the piano and bass, which were being recorded on another track (now sadly lost to erasure), in his headphones while the organ, drum, and vocal were being recorded on this track.

I knew it was all that exists of the song (unfortunately), but didn't know this was how it was found. Thanks for the info!

By the way, according to Vickie Kocher, the correct title for this song is "Teach Me to Surf," and it was intended as a duet between Bob Norberg and Vickie.  Vickie (now known as Victoria Hale) remembers the complete melody and lyrics, and has sung them to me.

Oh jeez. Assuming she hasn't already done so, if you ever get a chance to talk to her again, please suggest she get in contact with the Beach Boys camp and sing the song as she remembers it for preservation's sake. She may very well be the only person who remembers the song at all.

... only if she wants to, obviously, it'd just be a shame for something like this to be totally lost forever.

You should become a vegetarian like me.

Cheesy  What if someone becomes a vegetarian AND a tree-hugger?  Let alone, if they're a college "educated" Leftist, which sees mankind as a disease and the planet's biggest threat -- do they become cannibals?

The answer is yes.

I was somehow unaware that so many songs had different mixes or edits for their 45 release versus their album release.

This is extremely aggravating news.

Is there a list of songs this applies to?

Does this list possibly include original CD sources for each?

OH MY GOD.

My position is easy to understand. If you believe a baby is a human being. You're stuck on what we do after the body or head arrives "eyes closed" to avoid the horror of opening the box. I don't care if they're making soup to feed the homeless. It's wrong.

The point of these horrendous videos (that most human beings find bone chilling) is the callous and breezy nature with which this is conducted -- illustrating a human society that has devolved into something most find unrecognizable.  The depths of depravity and selfishness required to accept this sort of behavior -- let alone to conduct it as casually as ordering a f-cking pizza -- is beyond me.

Sorry if I thought this was self-explanatory.  Sad. But that is the whole point.  You don't see it yourself.

You should become a vegetarian like me.

Don't care for it. Don't understand why Brian cut it. Don't understand why folks here care about it. Don't understand this desire to wallow in Brian's darkest days. Don't understand why it's a bonus track on NPP.

This might be my least favorite post on this messageboard. Sorry.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Most embarrassing dodged bullets of The Beach Boys' career? on: April 20, 2015, 06:53:51 PM
Lei'd in Hawaii.

Disagree. The ultra-stripped down, vastly different arrangements are really interesting and generally enjoyable. "Surfer Girl", holy sh*t, that's a nice version.

As for potential embarrasing dodged bullets, No Pier Pressure, in any form, being a Beach Boys record.

Wtf, when did the Brianistas take over this message board? This was such a lovely place with OSD spilling out his bullshit from time to time, but now so much crap. What happened? Did Brian's board close?

Agree. There was a good middle ground that this board was on for several years that kind of seemed to disappear rather suddenly at some point within the last six months or so. I love Brian, obviously, but you don't have to love Brian to the exclusion of all others.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love states touring band in best shape vocally since original group on: April 14, 2015, 12:53:44 PM
It just ain't cool for Mike to be repeatedly saying that stuff in interviews. Ugh. As if his own sh*t don't stink. Everyone's does! Why does he have to turn it into a competition, where the other "team" has to be put down/diminished. I do not know why he always has to put down Brian in some way.

Team Brian does the same thing over and over and over and over. Collectively, I'd say they do it more than Mike ever has. I don't appreciate when Mike says shit like this, but Team Brian does the same thing and does so more often.

I don't think "Team Brian" simply getting Al, Blondie, and Dave onboard, and kicking some butt, proving they've got some chops

Yeah, I don't see how that's relevant to anything I said in any way. At all. Brian's people have said and done some very spiteful things, generally unprovoked, toward Mike in the last twenty years. Mike's done his fair share of bullshit over the years, but so have Brian's people. Mudslinging only serves to damage Brian's reputation, which doesn't need to be defended anyway considering he's Brian Wilson, thus making the spiteful moves etc. totally unnecessary.
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Ponostore version of NPP now available on: April 13, 2015, 09:53:32 PM
ok we just did a blind test.  my daughter scrambled up four playings of "this beautiful day" -- cd quality and hi res, for my wife and me.  We are both over 50, and my wife is not nearly as into music as I am.  Absolutely no question -- we said hi res, cd quality, cd quality, hi res.  Huge difference.  My wife said "our stereo has never sounded so good."  Try it yourself.  You don't need a ponoplayer to play the flac files, just download the program pono musicworld.  The program is free, the flac files will cost you less than a couple of bucks each.

NO IT'S "AURAL BUTT SNIFFING". I DON'T APPRECAITE QUALITY PRESERVATION ON ANYONE'S PART, I JUST LISTEN TO 64KBPS WMA FILES AND NEVER TAKE SHOWERZ

Maybe calm down.
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did Carl lose some of his motivation after 1973? on: April 11, 2015, 10:55:43 PM
He's a hugely motivated figure from, at the very least, Wild Honey to Holland, but I don't see much evidence of him resisting the Love/Johnston MOR axis after 1973

Yeah man, Love You is totally in line with that Love/Johnston MOR axis. The band totally became The Mike And Bruce Show in 1974.
