My parents took me to the June 12, 1983 Beach Boys concert following a Team America concert at RFK stadium.  I don't remember if they sold them or gave them out but I had a poster from the event entitled "Surf DC." I managed to keep the poster through several moves but evidently lost it at some point.  Is there a source somewhere for scans of BB promtional materials?  I have a search agent set up on ebay but so far no luck in finding the poster.

Speaking of Steve Earle, I was sad to hear that his son Justin Townes Earle died at the age of 38 on August 20, 2020.  He had talent:

It's nice to see artists still putting out concept albums.  The first three songs didn't do too much for me but I started digging the album on the fourth track (his version of John Henry was a Steel Driving Man).  Overall I thought it was pretty good with my favorite track being Black Lung.

I see Steve Earle has a new album out, "Ghosts of West Virginia". I listened to some clips on amazon. Sounds really good. Anyone heard it?

A couple possibly unpopular opinions:
- I usually appreciate the falsetto but in Hawaii, it's a bit too high/too much for my taste
- To my ear, the chorus in Heroes and Villains doesn't fit real well with the rest of the song

I've only listened to the whole album once so far...  but agree the songs seem to meld together.  Goodbye Jimmy Reed stood out to me maybe just because the instrumentation was different than the other tracks.

I don't understand the negativity toward John Fogerty here.  I think most people would be bitter if they lost ownership of hit songs they wrote an people can be bitter for years before they put it behind them.  I know that's happened with me anyway so I wouldn't assume he is faking anything.  Anyway, a very nice performance by him today of City of New Orleans:

I don't think there's any negativity towards him, at least not from my side, and that is all I can talk about. I'm just saying that his way of acting in interviews and such seems kinda faked to my eyes. I know that I've acted similarly when I was trying to hold down certain things. It's just my interpretation. I also think that he seemed more real in earlier years.

I don't think anyone is denying that he was ripped off; I don't see anyone putting him down as a songwriter, singer, or guitarist. There were three other guys that helped him achieve his dream of rock and roll immortality, but to hear him tell it today, they impeded him instead of helping him. I don't believe that is true. With rock bands, there is a tendency to always focus on the frontman or lead singer, main songwriter, but a great singer and songwriter needs a good band backing him up. How great would Elvis been at Sun Records without Scotty and Bill there to play those songs? How good would The Beatles have been minus George and Ringo? Give credit where credit is due, that's all i'm asking.

I think everyone posting here acknowledges Fogerty's immense talent, and I don't see anyone ripping him.  We're giving our opinion on what we see.  If we're only going to say nice things here you need to go delete 90% of the threads on the main forum.

Of course anyone can write their opinion on a discussion board.  I don't think he's faking being happy but I don't know him personally so can't say for sure.

On the main forum, there was a thread recently about Beach Boys covers.  I noticed Cotton Fields was released by the BB before the CCR version.  I wonder if the BB version might have inspired the CCR recording or if they were already working on the song independently.

Why didn't that part make the single version? Does anyone know they decided to cut it away?

I'm talking about that hum di dum hum di dum uuh uuh part before the chorus hits back again. After hearing that on the smile sessions the bridge just sounds full and completed to me, and it gave me an answer to why they had that weird fast fadeout on the single version before the last chorus.

I consider myself a fan of "modern" classical music. My favorite are Prokofiev, Debussy, Satie, and Philip Glass (although he's a different era). Prokofiev's Nevsky...woah!

Nothing like a wall of sound, but I appreciate the song-writing of the Lumineers.  I read an article where a piano tuner described the upright piano they use as "firewood."  For a while, I wondered if it might be deliberately de-tuned, but perhaps it is just a unique sounding old piano.

I liked both versions, especially the instrumental.  I agree with krabklaw about the embellishments in the Idol version... but "less is more" probably isn't a winning strategy on those types of shows... 

I see Smile Sessions isn't considered a studio album but if it were and you ignore all the bonus tracks... I think Good Vibrations would be my favorite closing track.

My daughters aren't the Beach Boys fan I am (at least yet) but both liked the song in the movie.  I do have a niece that's a fan (has a record player and the Beach Boys Concert LP).

At home for a Spring Break stay-cation with my family - we decided to splurge on Disney + ($7/mo) and watched Stargirl last night.  Honestly, I've always thought BTTYS was a bit on the cheesy side but I like the song.  The versions in the movie are really good and I think will help introduce BB music to a new generation.  The song is actually in the movie twice (the bare solo version from the trailer near the beginning of the movie and then again with marching band backup later on).

Just saw the trailer for Stargirl, new Disney movie on channel Disney+ in March.

Gotta admit, Be true to your school is not your classical goose bumps tune. But in their version it cuts really close!

Since going to the BW concert in Maryland last week, I've been getting California Saga in my head.  Thinking it might be because I hadn't previously listened to that song nearly as much as some of the others. 

I'm so glad that this night turned into a success. I guess something I didn't take into account, is that a casino that's already populated with people may be obliged to buy tickets to who is performing, regardless of who it is. Not to say it wasn't Brian's crowd, no matter who it was it is clear Brian and the band made them his crowd! I hope we continue to hear about MORE nights like this!

I'm very glad as well.  I'm thinking they must have sold a lot of tickets in the last few days before the concert.  Although I wouldn't be surprised if some hotel guests attended, I think it was mostly concertgoers rather than the casino crowd - I was surprised how crowded the casino was on a Wednesday (we walked through on our way in), but think that was mostly locals who came for just the casino.  The casino had some kind of incentive thing going on - there were lots of people walking around with new comforters for beds.

Just got back from the Maryland show at MGM.  This was my first time seeing BW since my parents took me to my first rock concert on June 6, 1983 when the Beach Boys played at RFK in DC after a Team America vs Fort Lauderdale Strikers soccer game.

I bought the $23 seats for my brother and me but was pleasantly surprised when offered by the ushers to move closer to the floor.  The place looked mostly full to me.  Anyway, we had a really great time and I'm very glad we went.  Crowd was mostly old-ish but there were some younger folks there as well including a young couple sitting near us that danced during several songs.  Al Jardine was awesome and Matt did a great job as well.  I thought Brian sounded good too, especially on Do It Again, Heroes and Villains, and Love and Mercy.  It smelled like someone must have lit a joint when Darian sang I Can Hear Music.

Lots of comments about whether Brian should continue touring...  I agree with those who say it's up to him.  I disagree that him performing could possibly take anything away from his legacy.  Nothing can take away from the songs and albums BW wrote and recorded....  

In addition the Beach Boys, I'm also into bluegrass and classic country music - and regret not seeing Bill Monroe and Johnny Cash when I had the chance.  Seeing a living legend perform tonight was a special experience.
