I have these two pairs of Beach Boys' shorts. They are from the 25th Anniversary Sunkist-sponsored tour. One pair is orange and the other is blue. They are both size large and both have a nice BB/Sunkist logo sewn on them.
And that is much, much more information than anyone could possibly care about.
And they're for sale.
And I also have a real Beach Boys' Beach Ball. It's still in the box. I think it's from around the 15 Big Ones era...

Overrated material (Love And Mercy is the only great song). Vocals are shouted which ruins some of the songs (i.e. Melt Away). The production doesn't bother me too much. Some of the lyrics are embarrassing (Night time is delight time, it's starlight time, and it's the right time for me). Should've been incorporated into a Beach Boys' album. I read somewhere that Brian didn't care for this album. It reminds be of the Landy era. Rio Grande sounds contrived (those yelping indians are annoying). Why wasn't his collaboration with Lindsey Buckingham "He Couldn't Get His Poor Old Body To Move" included on the album? I can't listen to the complete album from beginning to end - it sounds like Brian is yelling at me! Just my opinion...
What the hey, no way is love and mercy the best song on that album. Most undeveloped, maybe (the chorus comes in WAY TOO FAST.) I gotta give it up for Melt Away as best song. I don't think's there's much sense in complaining about Brian's post Love You vocals as they basically are what they are (and the same can probably be said for his lyrics,) but I really don't see how they detract from that song. BW 88 is a really nice album. Not that it means "Love And Mercy" is the best song on the album, but it is the one song that Brian still performs live today. Actually, didn't he recently release like the 4th version of the song as a single? Like I said, it's only my opinion. You like "Melt Away", I think it's overrated. You're right, Brian's post Love You vocals are what they are. And I don't care for what they are. That's all. It's not so much the comparison to his 60's vocals, I just don't find his voice attractive. One final point I didn't make on my original post. One aspect that is often ignored when discussing Brian's solo albums is that EVERY SONG features a lead vocal by him. And this is where he misses the Beach Boys most importantly. On the Beach Boys' classic albums, you had maybe 3 Mike vocals, 3 Brian vocals, 3 Mike and Brian shared leads, maybe 1 Al, and 1 Carl and/or Dennis. The lead vocals were shared. There was variety. Very important. With Brian's solo albums, you have 38-45 minutes of ALL BRIAN lead vocals, and quite frankly, that's too much. I believe that is the MAIN reason for the relative lack of success of his solo recordings.

This one's kinda boring, anyway...
Elvis Presley's bass player in the late 1960's-early 1970's was Jerry Sheff. Jerry actually played bass on the Doors' L.A. WOMAN album. And also on the follow-up (without Jim Morrison), OTHER VOICES. I don't know about FULL CIRCLE.
Also, his son, Jason Sheff, is the fine bass player/singer for Chicago, whose other lead singer, Robert Lamm, was married to Karen Perk Lamm, who was married (twice) to Dennis Wilson, who was married to Shawn...no, nevermind...

One shame about The Soft Parade is that Easy Ride closes side one when that spot really should have gone to the Wishful Sinful b-side Who Scared You. Who Scared You should have been on the album and Easy Ride should have been the b-side.
Good observation, Music Machine. But why couldn't BOTH songs exist on the album? I like "Who Scared You" AFTER "Easy Ride". Lyrically and musically, it fits; would've made a great closing song for Side A. What do you think about a newly remastered EXPANDED Soft Parade CD, including "Who Scared You" placed right after "Easy Ride" and before "Wild Child", with liner notes and comments from Ray, Robby, and John?

Mark A. Moore,
I've been wanting to ask you this for awhile, and if you have time to post...
What is the one factor or factors in your life that inspired or motivated you to "carry the torch" or spread the word about Jan Berry and Jan & Dean's music? Is it simply your love of the music?
I think it's great. Keep up the good work...

Merle Haggard amazes me. A few years ago, I checked out a 4CD set from the public library and was suprised that I knew nearly everything on the first 2 discs. I didn't add them all up and I forgot how many hits that guy had. Amazing. Yeah, Merle Haggard is great! Somebody in the Beach Boys must've appreciated him also. Remember when they used to perform "Okee From Muskogee" in the early 1970's...

I think Mike Love had very little to do with Pet Sounds, and he STILL doesn't "get" SMiLE, but...
I think the Beach Boys' music from 1961-1965 would sound drastically different if not for the influence of Mike Love. And not just because of his lyrics or excellent vocal work.
Mike instilled that positivity, that aggressiveness, that extroverted personality which Brian lacked. It's not so much the specific subject matter (cars, girls, surf ), but as Carl put it so well - the simple joy of living. Mike was LIVING IT (as was Dennis), and had his finger on the pulse of that lifestyle. Yes, Brian was a good observer, but Mike could put those ideas to paper. Mike wanted to rock! I think Brian would've definitely written much more ballads and less rock and roll if not for Mike. And a large portion of the Beach Boys' early greatest hits are comprised of rock and roll.
And this is not to diminish Brian in any way. You never would've heard of Mike Love without Brian Wilson. It's just that Mike was able to mesh so well with Brian's music, probably kept firing ideas at him, and maybe, at times, actually motivated him. Mike kept pushing.
It's a shame what happened to their relationship...
