Sheriff John Stone, what is that on your avatar? Looks like Carl Wilson and a cop. Please explain.

That's a picture of me leading Jim Morrison out of the courtroom after he was found guilty for being a bad boy at the infamous Miami concert. I'm 106 years old now!
5302  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rare song -- Brian playing "Susie Cincinnati" and "Little Child" in Holland! on: February 05, 2006, 08:01:18 PM
In trying to determine if it was Brian or Al singing "Little Child", I've listened to the song about 57 times now. So, like most Brian Wilson-related songs, I've come to really like the song. The question is, why didn't they record it? Or did they?

"All Dressed Up For School", "Lazy Lizzie", "Hey, Little Tomboy", "Roller Skating Child", "I Want To Pick You Up", and now "Little Child". Is that more evidence that it is Brian?  Just kidding...

I don't ever want to see another Beach Boys movie. Their story is too complex and too long to fit into a movie. And it always comes out looking fake.

Although the last couple of BB/BW documentaries have been pretty good, I'm still waiting for the definitive BB/BW documentary to be made.  Much like the Dylan one.

I'd also love to see a well done Doors/Jim Morrison documentary. And one on Syd Barrett...
5304  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Let's Fight! The Ramones vs. the Sex Pistols! on: February 05, 2006, 12:37:25 PM
Also, the Pistols played live before they had even heard the heartbreakers.
Everyone modelled themselves on the Ramones.
Pistols, Damned, Clash.

What about the New York Dolls, who pre-dated the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Damned, and, of course, the Heartbreakers by a couple of years.

I think the  Johansen/Thunders team was as prolific as any of the Ramones or Sex Pistols.

There's some connection between the New York Dolls and the Sex Pistols, I think with management or something...

You like the Dylan appearance?  I remember one reviewer who actually thought it was Landy, that's how awful it is!

Smiley

I'm with c-man on this one. I almost burst out laughing when I hear Dylan singing on this song. And I love Dylan.

To me, this was an attempt by Landy/someone to surround Brian with as many "names" as possible to get attention. Much like like GIOMH sixteen years later...
5306  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rare song -- Brian playing "Susie Cincinnati" and "Little Child" in Holland! on: February 04, 2006, 03:24:28 PM
If that was Al...damn, why didn't he sing in that voice more often!

Isn't it amazing how similar the Beach Boys' voices sounded in the 1968-1973 time frame. I mean, you can listen to a track over and over, and pick it apart, and study it - and still not be able to tell who you're listening to.

OK, let the debate continue...
5307  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rare song -- Brian playing "Susie Cincinnati" and "Little Child" in Holland! on: February 04, 2006, 12:17:55 PM
Why is he stopping & starting the first tune ? Like he says " "forgot the darn song".

That was kind of my point - that Brian forgets how songs go. I just didn't want to say it.

Anyway, if it wasn't Brian, this recording also fooled the producers of the documentary that aired it, because they play it while showing and talking about Brian.

Also, does anybody think the beginning of "Susie Cincinnati" that somebody is playing on the piano sounds like "Night Time" from BW 88?
5308  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rare song -- Brian playing "Susie Cincinnati" and "Little Child" in Holland! on: February 04, 2006, 11:47:25 AM
The reason it sounds like Brian to me is because he sings a phrase or two, stops playing, sings a phrase, stops. You wish he would just play the whole song through without stopping! Brian still does that today when he's playing an impromtu song for somebody.

Makes me wonder if Brian had something to do with the writing of "Susie Cincinnati".

By the way, who is saying, "Ah, how are you all" at the very end?
5309  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rare song -- Brian playing "Susie Cincinnati" and "Little Child" in Holland! on: February 04, 2006, 07:58:54 AM
"Patty Cake" was reportedly written on Brian's trip to the NYC zoo after Murry died, in '73.
Which, if true, means it couldn't have been demoed in Holland in '72.

C-Man

Yes, I knew that.  When the song "Little Child" (I didn't know the title until this thread) was played on one of the documentaries, it was identified (incorrectly on this board in the recent past) as "Patty Cake", the confusion set in.

However, that raises the question, has anybody ever heard "Patty Cake"?
5310  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rare song -- Brian playing "Susie Cincinnati" and "Little Child" in Holland! on: February 03, 2006, 04:06:13 PM
Dan Lega,
Thank you for sharing these songs, but I have a question. The first song you have titled as "Little Child". I was under the impression that this song was called "Patty Cake", a song about a gorilla or something. Certainly the lyrics you posted say nothing about a gorilla. I'm confused...
5311  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The return of the "What are you listening to now?" thread on: February 02, 2006, 04:49:06 PM
I was just listening to HOLLAND. Even though I knew it, it just now struck me as interesting that Carl sings lead on both of Dennis' songs - "Steamboat" and "Only With You". Carl does a terrific job, but I wonder what prompted Dennis to give 'em up? Was Dennis' voice starting to go like Brian's?

Then I realized that with Carl singing lead on "Trader", some of "Funky Pretty", and "Better Get Back In Bed", maybe the group thought  HOLLAND was becoming the Carl Wilson Show and suggested that Blondie sing lead on "Sail On Sailor". I still wish Carl would've sang (the released) lead on "Sail On Sailor"...
5312  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who's Idea was it to put Sloop John B on PS--Brian's or Capitol's? on: February 01, 2006, 04:28:56 PM
No, I don't think "Sloop John B" fits on PET SOUNDS. Nevertheless, it's such a great record that I'm GLAD it was included.

I do have a problem with it's placement on the record. On my mix CD's, I always put it right BEFORE "Caroline, No". You know, he feels so broke up, he wants to go home. Then he gets home and discovers that Caroline cut her hair...  I'm always reconfiguring the sequence PET SOUNDS, more than any other Beach Boys' album.

PET SOUNDS is the greatest album ever, but I can't help but think how much more recognition it would've received if "Good Vibrations" would've opened that album. Then there would be NO ARGUMENT about the greatest of all time...

Any news on Dylan's next album?  Producer, band, possible release date?

Yeah, Swamp Pirate, hopefully you're right. I guess I have a bad attitude about this release; I know I'm supposed to be grateful for any crumbs... The way the three "solo" tracks are just tacked on bothers me the most. It kind of accentuates the split in the group. It reminds me of their infamous corporate meetings where each Beach Boy is accompanied by their attorney, or when they used to enter the concert stage from different directions. Is it so hard to just get together and work on a few songs? I'm being naive again...
5320  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Hallmark album on: January 30, 2006, 03:50:08 PM
It is absolutely worth it just for The Spirit of Rock and Roll alone.

Unless Brian does to this what he did to "California Feelin'.  I thought Brian might save "The Spirit Of Rock And Roll" for his upcoming rock & roll album. Of course, he could still include it. Or re-record it...
5321  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The 50s on: January 29, 2006, 06:49:54 PM
In more ways than one - drug abuse, tarnished voice, early death, somewhat underappreciated - Billie Holiday fits in quite nicely on the Smiley Smile message board...
5322  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The 50s on: January 29, 2006, 06:30:27 PM
I agree with all of the rock & roll choices posted above. But a couple of my non-rock favorites are:

- Frank Sinatra
- Perry Como
- Nat "King" Cole
- Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald duets
5323  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: 20/20 on: January 28, 2006, 07:21:02 AM
Category B could be a thread unto itself...a message board unto itself. Sometimes I think it would be funny if the BBs had just stopped listing songwriting credits after, say, 1966. As soon as the others (aside from Mike, of course, whose lyrics were always important), right when the others began contributing songs, just say "written by the Beach Boys." The nerd in me, of course, loves to know who wrote what with whom, when, where ("Salt Lake City? Your mind is getting senile!"), etc.

But I wonder which Beach Boy would be assumed to have written "Little Bird," for example.

And I can think this way in all humility and understanding, by the way, as a former Category B case... It took me long enough to accept that Brian's music was cool, but much, much longer to accept that any of the others were worthwhile.

(I'm an idiot.)

Great post, Luther!  And thanks for saying what more people than you think are saying...
5324  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: NEW live CD on: January 28, 2006, 06:47:34 AM
I'm hoping this isn't going to be 7 tracks like "California Girls" and "409" from the '93 show, plus three throwaway solo tracks. I'm already imagining the three solo tracks will be something like "PT Cruiser", an instrumental version of "Wind Chimes", and a Mike Love-Adrian Baker remake of "Little GTO."

This is what I'm expecting. There's so many ways to release their live stuff, why this way? Look at how the Grateful Dead and the Doors have done it. This CD will be shorter than the FRIENDS lp...

I know I'm supposed to be thankful for anything new, but...  One thing about the Beach Boys - they're consistent. They always leave me scratching my head.
5325  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: 20/20 on: January 27, 2006, 03:56:57 PM
other cotton fields and the ghastly nearest far away place, a top notch album.

"The Nearest Faraway Place" is one of those songs that:

a)  I like and can't figure out why nobody else does, and
b)  falls into that category of songs (for me anyway) where if Brian Wilson would've written it, would've been better liked and respected
