Would the essence of "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" be ruined if they added "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play" as bonus tracks?
Apparently Floyd think so. When the limited edition mono CD came out, they specifically stipulated that there be no bonus tracks or the deal was off. So then the A&B sides of the mono singles were compiled on a companion disc, and the label wanted to add the rare French EP mix of "Interstellar Overdrive" as a bonus track to that, but the band again said no.

What do you think, Chance? Do you think "Piper" or any other Pink Floyd albums would benefit from bonus tracks. Or are they fine as is...

Anybody aware that Lisa Marie Presley just got married for the 4th time?  Anybody care?

Also, I know I'll get some flack from Doors' diehards, but on The Soft Parade album, I'd still like to see "Who Scared You" simply inserted right after "Easy Ride" and before "Wild Child". Don't even call it a bonus track, just put an asterisk stating that it was previously released as a B side. I think it fits perfectly...

I know it ain't rock & roll, but...

The last song Frank Sinatra recorded before he died was "Silent Night".

It was an eerie, poignant recording. Haunting actually. The quality of Frank's vocal was determined to be unsatisfactory (a matter of opinion) and the track was not released. Years later the song surfaced on a Sinatra Christmas compilation CD.

Almost every Beach Boys mix CD I make for anybody includes the "break-up" theme, which includes the following 4 songs in this order:

- Wendy
- The Warmth Of The Sun
- Help Me, Rhonda
- Kiss Me, Baby

Yeah, Brian definitely did look a little disturbed during that broadcast. Yet, because he looked so good physically - the cool hair, somewhat flat stomach, STANDING at a piano (probably inaudible), after watching that show, I was optimistic about the future.

mike8902 mentioned "Let's Put Our Hearts Together", alan brightmore mentioned "Johnny Carson", idigworms mentioned "Solar System", and I mentioned "The Night Was So Young". We probably could've mentioned a couple of more from The Beach Boys Love You. Seems that Brian really connected with a lot of people with that album. I really liked Brian's compositions from that period (1976-1977); his sense of humor was still intact.

Interestingly, around that time, Brian also composed the song "Marilyn Rovell". Who would've predicted that in another 2 years or so, there would be no more Brian and Marilyn. After all they went through. Very sad...
5285  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Your favorite Brian penned lyric on: February 14, 2006, 06:05:43 PM
That's such a romantic song. Shame it wasn't about Brian's then-wife Marilyn.

Yeah, Jason, wasn't it supposed to be inspired by a "girlfriend", Debbie Kiel, or somebody...

I never really bought into that theory, though, or maybe I just didn't want to accept it.

I always felt that Brian was just trying to appeal to his younger audience. That adult/child in him. A 34 year old man writing teenage lyrics. Specifically that line "I've got a car and you're not too far"... We've all been there. Sixteen years old with our first junker. Maybe I'm just too sentimental. It is a romantic song though...

For me it's "The Night Was So Young"

"Is somebody gonna tell me why she has to hiyiyide, she 's passin' it by, she won't even try, to make this love go where it should"

"It's three o'clock, I go to my sink, I pour some milk, and I start to think, is she asleep, or is she awake, and does she think of the love we could make"

and "I've got a car, and you're not too far, please let me come over to you"

classic Brian...

Mike Lovestein,
Thanks for posting the article. Since seeing Sly on the Grammys, I'm a little obssessed with him right now, and this article was welcomed...

5291  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: In a sentence, what is your opinion on Dr. Landy? on: February 09, 2006, 05:16:14 PM
It's possible he may have been doctor-shopping to get more than one doctor to prescribe medications without the knowledge of the others, or obtaining additional medications without the knowledge and consent of the medical doctors.

I've thought about that possibility also. But it always leads me to the same question. Why?

I figure it was  A) Brian was in worse shape than anyone knew, and this was Landy's way to keep him out of a hospital, even unethically, or  B) this was Landy's way of controlling Brian, or  C) a combination of A and B

If it was only A, I would be mildly surprised. In 1981-82, Brian was a 340 lb. physical wreck. But I didn't get the indication his psychological problems were off the charts. I saw Brian with the Beach Boys in 1982, and while he looked morbidly overweight, he actually appeared more animated than usual on stage. I figured he was probably more high than mentally ill. Little did I know when he would re-emerge in mid-1983, he would be appear to be a different person...
5292  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: In a sentence, what is your opinion on Dr. Landy? on: February 09, 2006, 03:29:34 PM
I have a question about the Landy era.

It is widely accepted that Brian's intake of prescribed medication during this period really took its toll on Brian. My question is - Were the drugs prescribed directly by Landy, or was it another doctor on the Landy "team" doing the prescribing?

Don't misunderstand my question, I'm not excusing Landy in any way. But was somebody else examining Brian, and then prescribing the drugs. Just curious...

Good on Macca for rejecting his lifetime achievement award... hilarious though that Paul Weller is willing to take it instead!

I missed this! I'll admit I walked away from the TV a few times to check on the old Smiley Smile Message Board...

Anyway, was this award for Paul as a solo or as a Beatle? Did he refuse to take the stage? Did they show him rejecting it?  Details please... Thanks...
5294  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Grammy thread on: February 09, 2006, 01:54:19 PM
A couple of random thoughts...

As I was watching Sly, I had the same feelings I usually get when watching Brian on TV. First, I can't take my eyes off of him, he's the only one I can focus on. Next, after about a minute goes by, I realize I'm physically holding my breath, not knowing what he's gonna do next, or not do next. While I was excited to see Sly re-emerge, I thought it was sad. He appeared lost and not "with it"...

Paul McCartney was great. I feel the same way about McCartney as I did about the Rolling Stones at the Super Bowl. Yes, I'm the old fogie type I guess, but I like it when the Old Guard gets a chance to show the young people what real rock and roll is. U2 did that last night also, by the way...

Is it my imagination, or is Bruce Springsteen starting to look and sound more and more like Bob Dylan circa 1984 or so...

Just a minor observation, but I enjoyed that little tribute at the end of the show to Wilson Pickett. I thought it was an excellent representation of "In The Midnight Hour". I was glad Springsteen hung around for it...
5295  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: "Wild Honey" The Song! on: February 09, 2006, 12:40:21 PM
Okay, I love the song.  I really do.  But whoever is signing lead (Carl?) is WAY out of his range.  You can tell that he's straining at many points through out the song.  That said, whoever that is does a miraculous job of staying in key considering how far out of his range he obviously is.

They really should have put the song in a different key (preferrably one that's easier for him to sing) or had someone else sing it.  I don't think it really takes a lot away from the song, but sometimes I just lock in on that because it just jumps out of the speakers at you.

analogdemon, I agree with you. I've never cared for the lead vocal on this song. I don't know if it is the range that is the problem, though. I always thought it was just a matter of Carl trying to sound like somebody other than himself.

I'm not too crazy about the song "Wild Honey" either. I always thought it was overrated. About the only version of the song I kind of like is the live early-70's version with Blondie Chaplin's lead vocal. That version rocks. The 1967 version drags, for me anyway...

I think all you need to know about the BB's reaction to "Love You" is summed up in the little blip on the liner sleeve of the LP.

There's a full page picture of Brian at his Birthday party (or somewhere similar) with Marilyn hugging him and whispering in his ear... Brian has this huge grin on his face and below it, it says

"TO BRIAN WHOM WE LOVE WITH ALL OUR HEARTS.

We wish to express our appreciation, and acknowledge your willingness to create and support totally the completion of these songs.
We thank you for sharing yourself and your music with us, and all those who love you as well.
An Unspeakable joy being with you in your expression of the music you put out there for everyone.
Brian, we feel honored and grateful, and we love you.

Carl, Dennis, Michael, and Alan"

Ron, I can't believe you brought up this picture! I was just gonna mention it on the other thread about Beach Boys' pictures, because I have a question about it.

This picture has been bothering me from the day I bought the album 29 years ago. What is Brian holding in his hands. It is mysteriously blacked out. Is it simply a pack of cigarettes or is it something more, say, illegal?

Others that resonate for me, at their best:  Andy Williams

Good one, idigworms!  Andy had a great voice. Still does, actually. I really enjoy his Christmas music.

Not to get off topic, but some Andy Williams trivia for ya - what connection does he have to the Beach Boys? Hint - the answer is two part...

The sound/mix was messed up for most of "Start Me Up". I prefer the studio version of this song to the live version(s). I always think it loses something live.

While I thought they performed "Rough Justice" pretty well, I question the selection of the song. I understand why they chose it (something new, gotta stay current), I wish they'd have chosen one of their many classics. When you're only playing a 3 song set, and with that repetoire...

I thought "Satisfaction" was awesome. Jagger gave me goosebumps. I have never seen a singer his age (what is he, 62?) perform like that. Tremendous performance!  Not to sound like the current Brian Wilson, but with some of the music that is out there today, I thought the Stones made a statement, showing what real rock and roll sounds like. I LOVED IT!

I'll Bet He's Nice Brian/Carl

A little addition: On this song, Dennis sings "I'll bet he's nice, I'll bet he's twice", then he sings "You pretty darling, you my pretty darling", and finally, he sings, "I'll bet he's sweet, I'll bet he's neat".

Other than that, Ian's right on...
