51  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: National Basketball Association ('14-'15) on: March 25, 2016, 07:01:11 PM
I hope you guys don't mind my chiming in. I'm still following the 76ers. I'm still a supporter of The Hinkie Plan. The problem is, or the bottom line is, you have to pick the right players. Let's take a look at Sam's picks:

2013 - Nerlens Noel - He's not a game-changer; he'll have a game with 15 points, 15 rebounds, 5 blocks...and then disappear for the next four games. Hasn't developed an offensive game; durability also a question mark.
2013 - Michael Carter-Williams - traded
2014 - Joel Embiid - Still hasn't played a second. I've heard/read that he probably won't play Summer League either. Forget being a star, will he ever be a dependable NBA player?
2015 - Jahlil Okafor - Could average 20 pts. per game for the next ten years, but he's a defensive liability, lacks stamina/durability, and has/had off-court problems. Still "a kid", though, just 20 years old.

So, after all of the tanking and high draft picks, disappointing frankly. Enter Jerry Colangelo. So far, though, Jerry hasn't done much. He brought in Mike D'Antoni; frankly I don't know what contribution D'Antoni has made. Ish Smith was brought in to run the offense. He started well and the team won a few games, however, has since regressed. And, finally, Elton Brand was signed to mentor (babysit?) Okafor.

This off-season is crucial. They should have two very high draft picks. From everything I've read, Dario Saric is coming over. And, hopefully Embiid will be ready by the start of next season. If all of those moves pan out, that's quite a turnover of the roster. They need a point guard badly. They'll probably retain Grant, Covington, and Smith. That COULD be a respectable roster. The PR team is saying that Sam Hinkie is still running the show, but I've also heard that Jerry Colangelo has the final say on all moves. It should be interesting.

Yes, thank you, MarkJason, for posting the interview!

I think my favorite question/answer was:

Bud Scoppa: What's your favourite memory of Mike?
Brian Wilson: Working with him on lyrics. Writing songs with him.

...and when Brian says about Mike, "He's a great person."

I had a glance at the article in a shop today  Grin.

Apparently Brian hasn't written/ completed a brand new song since Shelter and The Private Life of Bill and Sue back in 2012  Sad.

Well, that explains a lot of things, answers a lot of questions. Brian's honesty is refreshing after reading those recent Mike Love interviews...

FYI - Just posted an interview with Mark Moore, the author of The Jan & Dean Record.

Outstanding job of research, backstories, analysis ... major focus on Jan Berry & Brian Wilson relationship!

55  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Frank Sinatra Jr. Dead at 72 on: March 16, 2016, 07:25:51 PM
Yes, Frank Sinatra, Jr. did do a great job carrying on his father's legacy. I saw Frank Sinatra live with Frank Jr. conducting in Hershey PA, and I've seen several taped concerts with the two. I always enjoyed the humorous but still professional banter between the singer/father and the conductor/son.

Frank Sinatra, Jr. would occasionally appear on the (Philadelphia DJ) Sid Mark radio show, The Sounds Of Sinatra. He always had some interesting stories to tell, not just about his father, but also about the music business and its personalities. Sid would play some tracks that Frank Jr. recorded through the years and some were quite good.

I saw some photos of Frank Jr. over the last year or so and he really lost a lot of weight. I didn't know if he was ill or just watching his diet.

Even though Frank Jr. was born into wealth and obviously had a lot of doors opened for him, in a way I always felt a little sorry for him. I mean, no matter what he accomplished in music, he had such a large shadow following him around, one which I'm sure he was extremely proud of, yet could never really escape. R.I.P. Frank Jr.

Edit: Frank Jr.'s mother and his father's first wife, Nancy Barbato Sinatra, is still living at age 98!

Good info. Would love to see a reissue including selections from SURF'S UP & SUNFLOWER plus "Jumpin' Jack Flash"!

Agree. You could fill up an entire second disc with great stuff!

If they ever wanted to reissue/remaster it again, and stay with a single disc, they COULD add "Jumpin' Jack Flash" or another classic from Surf's Up or Sunflower. The album clocks in at a little over 75 minutes, so there's room for one more song; I guess it would be close.

One thing that always stood out and I guess confounded me was the erratic transitions between the songs. Even on the remastered CD the applause is choppy, fades fast, and is different volumes from song to song. I'd like to see some good overdubbing and mastering of applause to make it sound a little more smooth and...consistent.

I think "Here Comes The Night" is well produced, the lead and backing vocals are excellent, and, having heard it on AM radio in 1979 while cruising around, it sounded pretty good. I'm still waiting for an official digital/CD release of the single version so I can put it on a comp! police

All in all, one of the cool aspects of BB fandom is that their wide body of work provides for some pronounced differences of opinion concerning various tracks. So I'll (gulp) say it again -- I've always liked the disco version of Here Comes the Night.

What I have noticed through the years is - AMONG BEACH BOY'S FANS - the problem with the disco version of "Here Comes The Night" isn't the track itself, but the length and space it takes up on L.A. Light Album (which could've been used for another 2-3 songs). Also, it did come out slightly late in the disco era, and it had to fight the negative stigma of The Beach Boys jumping on the disco "bandwagon".

I think "Here Comes The Night" is well produced, the lead and backing vocals are excellent, and, having heard it on AM radio in 1979 while cruising around, it sounded pretty good. I'm still waiting for an official digital/CD release of the single version so I can put it on a comp! police

They did the song live atleast I think 25 times in 1986. but I agree it should of been done more and in the 50th tour. They did a good job of it live in 86 to!

https://youtu.be/w_Uj1XFge7w

https://youtu.be/95W5kGk8hU0 (supposable Al was sick and that's why it didn't sound very good  live here)

I saw The Beach Boys perform "Rock And Roll To The Rescue" at The Allentown Fair in 1986. It was a good enough performance; it sounded pretty much like the studio recording. But, I got the feeling that I was one of about ten people in attendance who actually knew the song.

The Beach Boys must've believed in the song. They made some re-mixes of it. They put it on a compilation with their greatest hits. They did perform it live over a couple of months. And, they made an official video of the song. However, there was only one thing worse than that official video and that was the performance (actually lip-sinching) of the song on that Solid Gold Summer Song Special where a very trim Brian embarrasses himself trying to lip-sinch the song. I was in shock then (1986) and I still can't believe they aired that...performance. They must've really wanted to showcase Brian.

has brian ever preformed the song live with the beach boys? since he is the lead vocalist.

I don't know. He was not present in Allentown in 1986.

How frustrating is that ^ ? You have this excellent Doors' boxed set, just sitting around somewhere...unreleased. Will it ever see the light of day? 2021?

There are still rumors circulating about a 50th Anniversary disc/box set of the 1966 London Fog and Matrix shows. But, they better hurry. We'll soon be at the 51st Anniversary! Shocked

64  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Things We Did Last Summer on: March 10, 2016, 02:10:06 PM
I recall the box set liner notes saying it was intended for the Christmas album.  I'm assuming that's inaccurate?

I wish it would've ended up on The Beach Boys' Christmas Album. Lyrically it fits, you had Dick Reynolds available for the strings, and the Christmas album was too short to begin with. The only drawback would've been adding another ballad to an album already top-heavy with 'em.

On the recent Alternate Discography thread, I added "Things We Did Last Summer" to my alternate Christmas Album. Hey, the song is just sitting there, buried on an old boxed set. It needs to be heard, shared. I'm holding out hope that it is resurrected and added to the next Beach Boys' Christmas compilation...in a couple of years?
65  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Your SMiLE mix...for the fun of it on: March 10, 2016, 01:44:36 PM
Well, I never pass up the opportunity to repeat myself! Grin

First, I always considered "Our Prayer" to be a separate, complete track. If it was part of or an intro to another song, which would it be? "Heroes And Villains"? Does anybody have a suggestion? While it's certainly far from conclusive evidence, on 20/20, "Out Prayer" appears as a separate track.

Because "Our Prayer" did NOT appear on the infamous late-1966 handwritten tracklist, no, I don't think it was intended to appear on a final SMiLE. And, I find that very sad - and surprising. Is there a more beautifully written and performed piece of SMiLE music than "Our Prayer"? It has always remained in my Top 5 SMiLE songs. It's hard to believe that Brian WOULD discard it.

I know I will lose this argument - I always do - but I never thought of "Our Prayer" as an opening track (maybe I was prejudiced after decades of hearing it on 20/20). It just never sounded like an "opening" prayer to me. I think "Our Prayer" sounds more like a recessional (ending) hymn as opposed to a processional (opening) hymn. The transition on BWPS - "Our Prayer" into "Heroes And Villains" - never sounded quite right to me. I am aware of the 1966 session tapes and what Brian said, and obviously Darian Sahanaja liked it as an opener...that's why I always lose the argument Razz On BWPS, I do like the "Our Prayer" segment at the end, going into "Good Vibrations", although I wish they would've used the entire "Our Prayer" there.

Yes, I have always ended my SMiLE mixes with "Our Prayer" into "Surf's Up". No, I don't think a 1967 SMiLE would've ended like that because of what I said above, about "Our Prayer" being omitted. But, it just sounds so right to me, and it's my mix!  police
66  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Newly surfaced Doors song on: March 10, 2016, 05:15:55 AM
I really like the song and Jim was really into it. I hope a competent engineer gets a hold of the tape and improves the sound quality. I mean, that SHOULD happen!

Apparently, "Palace In The Canyon" was also on the December 12, 1970 New Orleans setlist - The Doors' last concert with Jim.  It's not known if the entire song was performed or just a poetic interlude.

It's interesting that "Palace In The Canyon" wasn't on the L.A. Woman 40th Anniversary Edition. Can we assume the song was only written AFTER L.A. Woman?

Ah, very nice. Now that I've already burnt the CDs I'm adding to these lists, especially with youze guys' suggestions. So they're much appreciated. It can be time consuming going back and looking through the years, especially on these things that already consumed mega amounts of time. 1969 and 1973 coming soon.

Edit: Post-post additions to 1972:

Willin' - Little Feat
FDR In Trinidad - Van Dyke Parks

More post-post additions to 1972:

I insist that you add "Perfect Day" by Lou Reed to your list immediately! Cheesy

And, what about the anthems, "School's Out" and "Smoke On The Water"?

"Baby Blue" by Badfinger? police

Sail On Sailor - usually at the top of my list; wish it would've been Carl or Dennis; I never cared for Blondie's lead or voice
A Day In The Life Of A Tree - this song was made for Brian or Dennis' voice
Getcha Back - I wish Carl would've done the tag
In The Back Of My Mind - anybody but Dennis; I love Dennis' (later) vocals but not on this one
The Beach Boys' Christmas Album - I wish Carl would've taken a lead, that way all five Beach Boys would've gotten one
Shelter and Isn't It Time - nothing against Foskett but I wish Brian would've gone for those high parts

Attempted a decidedly unadventurous single-disc compilation

1. Love & Mercy '88
2. Lay Down Burden (Live at the Roxy)
3. I'm Feeling Sad
4. Good Kind of Love
5. Nothing but Love
6. Don't Worry
7. Message Man
8. Proud Mary
9. Someone to Love
10. Being with the One You Love
11. Sail Away (OCA)
12. The Like in I Love You
13. This Isn't Love (piano demo)
14. Melt Away
15. Live Let Live
16. One Kind of Love
17. What Love Can Do
18. Meet Me in My Dreams Tonight
19. Good Vibrations (BWPS)
20. Midnight's Another Day
21. Southern California

There was about 5 minutes of space left and I couldn't decide whether to throw in How Could We Still Be Dancin' or just the "whoa-hey-yey" part of Rio Grande.

I've been using an edit of "Rio Grande", too. It starts (fades in) with the thunder at the 3:47 mark, proceeds through the "I want the river to take me home" part, and then through the "night-blooming jasmine" section, fading out at 7:22, right before it goes back into the "oh, the great big river" part. The total time of the segment is 3:27.

Anybody ever notice "I Only Have Eyes For You" is the greatest song of all time?

Love "I Only Have Eyes For You" by The Flamingos, Art Garunkel, and ... Ol' Blue Eyes with Quincy Jones conducting: https://youtu.be/ptwCK5dKV5I

Too bad, because "Almost Summer" was a hit.  If that had been under the Beach Boys' moniker, as a link in the chain between BIG ONES and L.A. they would have been able to stake a claim to continued commercial relevance in the late '70s - instead of a couple of fitful gasps here and there.

I always thought "Almost Summer", if a Beach Boys' single (and eventual album cut), could've jump started M.I.U., which was a lot more listenable to the average BB fan than 15 Big Ones and/or Love You.
