I like "Sam niguel" but it wouldn't have fit on KTSA. It sounds just too different to the rest of the songs.
It DOES sound different, but that wouldn't b unusual for the Boys. Their previous album included a beautiful, haunting ballad in Baby Blue, a rock version of a traditional children's song in Shortenin' Bread and a never-ending disco song, Here Comes the Night. Talk about songs that don't fit together. It's not just on LA either. Take a Load off Your Feet hardly fits on the same album with Surf's Up, Feel Flows and Til I Die. KTSA needed any good songs it could get, so I think San Miguel would have helped. I was talking about the sound, not the quality, arrangement or whatever of the song. Not only do the vocals sound totally different, it is the whole recording. HCTN and Shortnin' bread however sound totally like they were cut around that time (which they were) and with the same recording techniques...

I've seen video of Carl playing solos, yet once he was in the studio, I guess he concentrated on vocals & didn't worry about his playing too much, which was a shame in my opinion.
Yeah, I wonder about that too, though he did play on alot of the early stuff (incl. Pet Sounds) which he didn't get credit for I believe. From what I've heard (and I'd like to get this confirmed or cleared up) Carl was a well respected guitar player in the business.

If I'm not mistaken, Hal Blaine talks about never having seen them, either. And he'd have been around pre-Smile.
I don't think that Brian wrote charts for the drums (don't think that he knew how to write drum-parts to tell you the truth) and the basic-instruments. That's why I asked about the strings and wind section. And of course, the original intent was to know how Carl and Dennis handled this. I think Denny got a credit on L.A. for arranging the strings on "Baby blue". Well, it's not very complex, but if someone else took some ideas from Dennis and then wrote an arragement, I guess that guy would have gotten the credit, wouldn't he?

With all the talk about the lack of Dennis' participation or songs, wasn't "San Miguel" in the running for KTSA at one point? Since Dennis most likely needed money, it seems like he would have been glad to have the song on the album.
I think San Miguel is a terrific sound that would have helped KTSA a lot and would have gotten more notice there than it did on 10 Years of Harmony.
What could be removed from KTSA to make room? A lot.
I like "Sam niguel" but it wouldn't have fit on KTSA. It sounds just too different to the rest of the songs.

How She Boogalooed It ... possibly the least talked about beach boys song.
Yeah. That was one song that we thought about recording too. Do you know "Are you gonna be my girl" by JET? There's a part that sounds like it was directly taken from HSBI. Anyway, I'm excited for your version.... All the best Yeah, I think the rhythm of that part in the Jet song sounds more like Iggy Pop's Lust For Life... but still similar. I'm thinking of doing How She Boogalooed It with a kinda Srokes sound. I think it will really suit the song. Yeah, IIRC the bassline was definitely taken from Iggy Pop. But there's also some HSBI-part in there. I believe they also said so in an interview, or at least mentioned the WH-album...

That section on the Beach Boys is quite the read. That is if you are the department chair of a school of music theory!
Jeez! I wish I understood HALF of it. I might just as well have picked up an upper level college physics book!
Well, if you are into music theory it is ok. English isn't my first language but I can read through this mostly without any major problems...

Can you picture Dennis knowing the ranges of specific horns, or knowing that he had to transcribe the alto sax part down a minor third?
That's exactly why I asked this question.... Maybe Stebbins, Ed Roach or whoever has some insight can add something....

the production kills "Oh Darlin"
Plus the arrangement. Man that song was slaughtered to death ! I do, however, stand by my point that Dennis withheld his participation/songs from albums for reasons that don't seem "team" oriented. First, what are the reasons? I haven't read about them, but maybe I missed something. Second, how could he have contributed songs, when he hadn't any good ones? He already gave the band "Love surrounds me" and "Baby blue" which were supposed to go on "Bambu". It does seem kind of ironic that Brian and Carl, of all people, would vote Dennis out of the group. It is well known that Mike more or less had control over Brian's voting right. First Surf's Up, then MIU, then KTSA. It's disappointing when somebody in the band doesn't want to contribute or boycotts an album because he doesn't think his bandmates' songs are strong enough, or as good as his? A team player? He did contribute songs to "Surf's up" but had a fight with Carl over them. It wasn't like he didn't give them any.

I just listen to this and at 4:33 there's a vocal harmony on the "oh-woh-woh" that isn't on the album version. Don't know if this was ever talked about but nice to hear this. I think there should be a collection with the 70s singles....

Years ago I was told that this was the last picture of Dennis.... Somewhere in my collection, I have a picture of Dennis holding Gage at the Jamaica concert they did in I believe 1982. It's kinda strange to see Mike in the background giving Dennis the look of " that's my grandson and son in law who is also my cousin " vibes. If I can find it I'll ask the person who took the picture if I can post it. Ted That would be great.

First, I think there are two different things there: transcribing music from brain (or other instrument) to paper, and arranging. And those two aren't necessarily the same thing. By their peaks, I'd guess both Carl and Dennis were capable of doing their own arrangements, more or less, meaning they could decide which instruments did what parts and when.
You're right, but I didn't want to make it too complicated From interviews with some of the Wrecking Crew, Brian wrote down the parts (though in a simple form) for them and there's also a story how Brian wrote down some music while at the same time talking to someone. But to make the question a little clearer: Did Dennis and Carl e.g. sit down at the piano and work out arrangements for their songs? And I'm not so much talking about the basic stuff like guitar, piano, etc (which probably was done with just chord-symbols) but strings and the wind section....

We know that Brian wrote out the arrangements for the musicians. But how did Dennis and Carl handle this? They're string and wind section arrangements mostly weren't as complex as Brian's but surely someone had to write 'em down I'd guess.... Did Dennis and Carl write music at all?

Huh, I like the movie as well. It´s grand and the music seems .... it´s just played well, in my opinion. But a few facts are really confusing, if you are familiar with Buddy´s Biographie... and some stuff is mixed up.
That's a nice expression. Some stuff is just plainly wrong

Has `Goin` to the Beach` ever been bootlegged?
I think I remember that the backing track was booted, but not the finished version. I'm not sure though. You can hear Mike and Brian working on that song in the TV-special. I said it once and I'll say it again: "Oh darlin'" is a very, very good song but that terrible (!!!) production ruined everything To me, the version with Brian singing on it sounds better. Yes, although far from a good take, it has much more soul. Could have been a great recording.
