I haven't watched the performance yet, so I can't say anything about it, but I wonder why people are saying that TCTAFM was the wrong song. You can't do promotion on a late night show with a slow song like e.g. "Sumertime". People need to have something that sticks to their ears, a hook. TCTTAFM fulfills this absolutely. Great choice for turning people on to that album.

Same melody as Buddy Holly's "Everyday".
Great song though and I really love the harmonies on this too. In fact I'm quite a fan of the whole "Still crusin'-album, except for the inclusion of the classic tracks (including an imo awful alt. take of WIBN)
8203  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Musical references/quotations in BWRG on: September 20, 2010, 12:31:43 PM
"I got plenty of nothin'" has part of the bassline of the Beatles' "Something"

The vocals that come up in "Summertime" after the "rise up singing"-lyric remind me of "Country air" but that's probably just my imagination

Brian's best album of his carreer as of yet, no doubt.

You serious?  Grin

Even if I wouldn't mean his solocarreer, I'd have a point, don't you think so ?  Wink

Got the album yesterday, it was released just now in Germany.
From start to finish a brilliant album. Plus very good artwork, fantastic sound and wonderful singing by Brian, his best in I don't know how many years or decades. Don't want to go into details. Brian's best album of his carreer as of yet, no doubt

When looking through this thread I was remindedof another one I started a few years ago, hoping we could compile a list of Beach Boys-concerts that were proffessionaly filmed. Maybe someone here is interested in (re-)visiting that thread and maybe add some more infos. Didn't get too far back then

And on his first day on the job as a Beach Boy, Dennis Wilson fired him.   Grin

Please tell more....

A Beach Boys-album by Brian would sell. Not talking about the quality or whatever, but in fact Brian's name is the only thing that would make a BBs-album sell nowadays. I wouldn't bet on a no.1-album though

Why do they always want re-recordings on their album ?!

Southbay Surfer - Surfin' Down the Swanee River (The Honeys)
Baker's Man - Hide Go Seek (The Honeys) - Speed Turtle

Southbay surfers and Surfin' down.... both use the melody of "Swanee river". Brian didn't write it, just played around with the melody
8214  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Really, really, really really bad BB videos on: September 06, 2010, 07:55:10 AM
1980's was the decade for cheese and the 'Boys weren't the only or worse culprits by far.

You may be right, but afaik they were the only major rock-act that inspired countless other artists, that was once being hailed as one of the greatest groups in the world with a legacy second to none, that got down to that level of cheese. Of course I could be wrong but I don't know of another act of that caliber to go down this way and foder with it's own legacy.

I wonder how a major act as the Beach Boys couldn't get a decent music video done. Still good to see them in high quality during those years. There's not too much other stuff...
Part of the reason was simply that most of those other acts that fit that category either ceased to exist (Beatles) or weren't being played in mtv (Dylan).

The Rolling Stones had some videos. Although not necessarily works of art, they're videos managed to keep them looking kinda good at least. Or didn't try to make them look like something they obviously weren't. just my opinion of course

Well, I think every J&D-album should be available on CD but business-wise this one wouldn't sell. Even worse than every other album because it would only be bought by the hardcore-fans as it hasn't the quality for a broad audience

Surfin' (live at Hawaii 67) organ parts to Do it Again (Brian's wordless vocals)

I believe that melody comes from another song by another band. Can't remember any of the names right now though...

"Underwater" by The Frogmen, a #44 hit in May 1961. The record was released on Candix 314.

Yes, thanks !

I love "Rag mama rag". It's a helluva song. And I'd loved if the Beach Boys would've made an album with this kind of basics country-rock'n'roll. "You need a mess of help" was a good start but probably not commercial enough. Blondie and Ricky would've been perfect for that kind of stuff (I believe Blondie played on the Last Waltz, right?)

Anyone heard his album "Alive & kickin'" which he recorded and sold as a benefit for New Orleans after Katrina?
8220  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Jan & Dean 1986 cassette only release, \ on: September 04, 2010, 06:36:38 AM
It's a nice collection with some good and even some very good material from Jan. "How how I love her" is one of the greatest ballads I've heard. "Hot looking lady" is a funky tune that could've been a hit imo (and it features Dean).
Unfortunately some other songs are not as good and/or show how the cocaine addiction in the early 80s destroyed Jan's voice, which had impressively recovered before
8221  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BWRG 2nd week - #53. on: September 03, 2010, 08:12:50 AM
One summer track as good as "Fun, Fun, Fun" to knock off Katy Perry and we'd care again.

No, we wouldn't. I can think of some folk who would, but Brian left 'summer tracks' behind him in 1968

I care. We had Midnight's Another Day. That had the edge. Lyrically OTT (too many metaphors piled in), but damn-near as essential as Surf's Up, and certainly up there with 'Til I Die, This Whole World and many other top flight Wilsonians.

Those are not 'summer tracks'.

Yes, aware -  I'm referring to Butch's reference to tuns that make us care; these are simply tunes (not specifically summer themed) that make me care about BW's output... to be frank the summer themes are incidental and that theme isn't a prerequisite of my caring about his output.

Hmm, doubting my own clarity now -  hope my point comes through... it's a bit muddy... like a summer puddle...

I'd love to see Brian - or the BB... or both - chart with a cracking good, contemporary song, but the old sun/fun/cars/girls formula ain't gonna do it.

I think "Soul searchin'" could've been just that song.

"Lana"'s intro -> "Desert drive" was already mentioned but wasn't that lick also used on the Gershwin-album? I have heard someone mentioning it. Unfortunately the album still isn't out in Germany so I haven't listened to it yet   Sad

You may have mixed it up with "The air that I breath". I have heard Shawn wanted this song to be played at the funeral because it was Dennis' favorite

BTW: Brian and the Beach Boys recorded a version of this song with Julio Iglesias

Love that picture with the red shirt. I use it as an avatar on the official Beach Boys-message board

I don't understand why'd they'd bother re-recording those bits — why not use the existing takes in the can?

Could've been a rehearsal so they know what they sound like.
