Think I did read once that Brian & Fogerty were neighbor's, but I'd just mentioned recently that 'back in the day' Fogerty lived just up the road from Dennis, on Beverly Glen.  The Phillips did indeed live across the street from the Wilson's, and I remember Elvis having a great place around the corner from Brian on St. Pierre, the road that was the cut between Beverly Glen & Bellagio.  Dennis used to trip on Elvis' house, the same as he would years later on Hefner's.  I used to tell him that instead of screaming outside, if he rang the bell they'd probably invite him in!  But he used to like to play the fan sometimes, and preferred to stalk...  Ah, back in the day...

Great. As an Elvis-fan I really love stories of connections between BBs and him.
I saw an interview with Manson and he said that Elvis once through stones on him so he would get away from his ground. Doesn't sound like Presley but if it happened, it was probably one of the Memphis Mafia.
I'm certain that I'm gonna ask you if you got some more Presley/Wilson-stories some time...

Don't know for the Bellagio days, but wasn't John Fogerty Brian's neighbour at one time?

Chuck Berry released a pretty good LP called "Rockit" in the mid/late 70s I am fairly sure.

I believe it came out in '76 or '78. It is good in parts but the sound and production is very lame imo. And the songs are not all very strong

What happened to your Brother logo vector source file on the USB stick?  I was looking forward to that!

I'd take one too, please.

Can you believe that they changed the writing to this:

Sure, it has some charm but the older writing has more class.

Thanks for sharing this. I've just started getting interested in the blues. Right now I'm listening to classic Chicago Blues - Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Willie Dixon, etc. I discovered them from being a fan of Clapton, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones. I'm not sure if I will get into 1920's blues, when did powerful lead guitar players join blues bands?

Electric blues started in the big cities because you didn't have electricity in the country or you couldn't aford it. Late 40s/early 50s is my guess. Memphis, Chicago, Detroit. Those are the metropoles for electric blues.
Fascinating music and culture, especially if you don't listen to many of those so called "experts" who try to make something (intellectual or philosophical) out of the music that it never was and never will be if you understand what's the real basis of it. You'll also learn how terrible many of the big bands were in playing blues. Clapton really is an exception.
I love blues of the 20s and that periode, but then I love almost every kind of blues. If you want to get into it, get some Robert Johnson and one of the two CDs of Clapton doing Johnson's songs (Me& Mr Johnson, Sessions for Robrt J:, the latter including a DVD). But of course this is not the only kind of blues from those years.

I don't know, but Elvis' singles also didn't appear on his albums already in the 50s

Was that in the UK or in the US?

US, but I probably the same in the UK because the albums didn't differ

My heart almost stopped when I found this. Unfortunately, the two most interesting Beach Boys(at this time period) are not in the footage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BazaPfL-5OU&feature=related

Very cool !!!
Dennis and Carl were travelling with another plane as Mike and Al at this time. Probably already were in Australia or landed later

I edited together the vocal snippet and the strings from 'Don't Talk'....so it is just Brian's amazing harmony with his beautiful string arrangement. The quality is a little lacking (with the harmony) because I had to slow it down to fit the string arrangement. Other than that, I think it came out fine.

Very nice ! Would love to hear the complete song just with Brian's lead and the strings (or the parts where this is possible)

LP was produced by Stu Cook,

Which brings the question to my mind if there was ever a connection between Dennis and CCR
Well CCR and the Beach Boys played some shows together in '68 or '69. Also, there's a great quote from John Fogerty somewhere about Brian. The gist is some record label guy told him in the pre-Creedence days, '65 or so, that "kids don't really know anything about making hit records." Fogerty just replied "Brian Wilson".

This probably isn't the kind of Dennis/Creedence connection you had in mind...but... I wrote a book about Dennis, and my brother-in-law Felix Brenner has been John Fogerty's live mixer for many years.

Great none the less. Thanks Jon !
Well, both of Dennis' brothers did record a Fogerty-song.

I thought there might've been a closer connection as I sometimes have the feeling that every californian from that time has a Dennis Wilson-story...
And tell your brother-in-law he's doing a great job. Fogerty's concerts sound great and powerful

I haven't watched the performance yet, so I can't say anything about it, but I wonder why people are saying that TCTAFM was the wrong song. You can't do promotion on a late night show with a slow song like e.g. "Sumertime". People need to have something that sticks to their ears, a hook. TCTTAFM fulfills this absolutely. Great choice for turning people on to that album.
8195  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Island Girl - last real example of \ on: September 21, 2010, 07:44:31 AM
Same melody as Buddy Holly's "Everyday".
Great song though and I really love the harmonies on this too. In fact I'm quite a fan of the whole "Still crusin'-album, except for the inclusion of the classic tracks (including an imo awful alt. take of WIBN)
8196  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Musical references/quotations in BWRG on: September 20, 2010, 12:31:43 PM
"I got plenty of nothin'" has part of the bassline of the Beatles' "Something"

The vocals that come up in "Summertime" after the "rise up singing"-lyric remind me of "Country air" but that's probably just my imagination
8197  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BWRG - Wow on: September 20, 2010, 12:14:31 PM
Brian's best album of his carreer as of yet, no doubt.

You serious?  Grin

Even if I wouldn't mean his solocarreer, I'd have a point, don't you think so ?  Wink

Got the album yesterday, it was released just now in Germany.
From start to finish a brilliant album. Plus very good artwork, fantastic sound and wonderful singing by Brian, his best in I don't know how many years or decades. Don't want to go into details. Brian's best album of his carreer as of yet, no doubt

When looking through this thread I was remindedof another one I started a few years ago, hoping we could compile a list of Beach Boys-concerts that were proffessionaly filmed. Maybe someone here is interested in (re-)visiting that thread and maybe add some more infos. Didn't get too far back then
