In the same programme David also says that a "hollow body electro-acoustic" was played unplugged on the recording of "Surfin", would that be Carl's Kay branded guitar or the rental one? Also, seems strange to rent amplifiers to practise then not use them for the recording of "Surfin'"....

Wonder about that too. On "Surfin'" it's not amplified, same goes for "Luau". Or the volume was very, very low.

Would Carl's guitar be something close to this?

Regarding the instruments, did they buy or loan that stuff from the food money? And what exactly? Just drums?
8128  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Cottonfields / Cotton Fields - BW and AJ version on: December 04, 2010, 12:28:33 PM
Later: the Dutch release was August 1969. So... not an influence, then.

Ahh. Thanks for that bit of info.

It's curious, though, that Alan waited ... what? seven months after the release of Brian's version of "Cottonfields" on 20/20 (NINE months after its recording!) before deciding the track needed a remake. What was the immediate impetus? Or is it just that Alan takes forever with anything he tackles (e.g., "Loop De Loop," "Don't Fight The Sea," solo album, etc.)?

Maybe there was no studio time for them before....

I think Brian just heard the word "single" and thought they asked him about his favorite. But since it's Mr. Wilson himself it could of course be meant in any way thinkable (and not thinkable....)
8130  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Grammy Nomination(s)? on: December 02, 2010, 05:53:17 PM

It always mesmerises me how un-charismatic they could be. Even Dennis doesn't shine here....
8131  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Grammy Nomination(s)? on: December 02, 2010, 12:52:46 PM
I'd say the lack of Grammy nominations for BWRG is proof positive that the album is above the quality of the items that have been nominated this year. I think we all agree. Let's leave it like that. I'd say Brian already got slapped in the face with his one Grammy (Best Rock Instrumental Performance on a tune with wordless vocals...YEAHHHHHHHHH).

Or losing against Ray Charles in "best vocal" or something like that..... Roll Eyes

FYI - Mojo Collections from Spring 2002 has a nice article called Tilting Windmills, about Holland. Al has quite a few comments, the first one being "Insanity!".

You couldn't scan this in if you get the chance? I'd love to read it!

no need to scan it: http://brianwilsonfans.com/a_bb.php

Thanks ! A very nice read

I wonder if seeing Brian's unhealthy eating habits (such as devouring an entire steak in 1-2 bites) when she was a child had an adverse affect on the way she handled herself.

I guess none of us could understand what an affect being Brian Wilson's daughter and living with him, has on a child. Marylin tried the best to hide it but as long as you're in the same household there's no way of not being affected. Same goes of course for Wendy

They are mostly a joke, I agree. But the added attention it would've brought BWRG  would have been a nice, deserved bonus imo

There's still a difference between stealing and adapting.

- Island Girl: loosely based on Whispering Bells by the Del-Vikins.

Plus "Everyday" by Buddy Holly

Nothing in that article indicates a reunion. It'll be Mike & Bruce with their band

This user has some acapella mixes of songs up that I hadn't heard before
8140  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Fan Mix of \ on: November 25, 2010, 04:25:20 AM
IIRC, Bruce's main grievance was he thought that the backing vocals were voiced too low, making the group sound like "a bunch of old men."

There's definitely deepr singing on Break Away than on other tracks. I often wonder if it was Murry's voice since this song was a collaboration between him and Brian.

If this is too off topic, please move this post.
I was just listening to some Tennessee Ernie Ford on youtube and found a video for his version of "Peace in the valley". Take a look at 0:12 and 1:09, you might recognize those pictures

Well, you can find a part of "And your dream comes true" single-tracked on "Hawthorne", but it's not the complete song, just part of the session.

I don't get the "Viva Las Vegas"-connection, except maybe that Ann-Margaret was pretty damn hot. Or was that not related to his "joke"? Was he maybe talking about the new re-mix-album "Viva Elvis"?

I believe he was referring to this "Viva Viagra" commercial.

8145  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis Wilson's sailboat - Harmony on: November 18, 2010, 06:31:25 AM
Hi all,

Does anyone know what became of Dennis' sailboat, Harmony?  My husband and I were taking a little cruise around the harbor in Marina del Rey last weekend, looking at all the boats, and he started talking about Dennis, which turned into a discussion about what ever happened to Harmony.  I did a little research online and all I was able to find was a question on a cruising forum that this person heard it was up for auction/sale (this was 2009, I think) but they didn't know any details and there were no responses.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to the board !!

I guess Ed Roach could have some infos and will post them here.

BTW Is there some kind of benchmark for Dennis at the Marina ?

1968 was the wrong time to put out anything by the Beach Boys.....

Hmm, have to disagree with you there...
There's never been a bad time for them to release something they believe in.

ahh, yes, maybe so.
Tho, MAYBE,  you don't know what you mean either! Else you would have expressed it in terms that made it clear for all to see the inner workings of your most devious mind

I don't think you know what I mean....

Well, I know exactly what I meant. A little thinking about the point the Beach Boys had got to at that point in their career and considering some of the earlier posts shouldn't make it too hard to understand. Let me know if I can help you any further. But on the whole, it isn't important enough to make something out of it that it ain't

One caveat, however: if you're coming into this expecting whole songs and plenty of them, be warned. This is semi-academic (that's not a criticism - entirely the reverse) and, I'd say, possibly a bit heavy for the casual, Endless Summer, Sounds Of Summer fan.

Any uncommon songs/versions we've not heard before Andrew? Mine's on its way from Play.com.

Well... not BB/BW, but that's the first time I've every heard any of "Fannie Mae".

You should get the soundtrack to "American graffiti". Buster Brown's original is on there. Or just click here:

I can't see the BBs book for crying out loud... Where is it?

At left, between the ring-bound book and 'The Beatles Story'.

Perhaps it's photoshopped in by someone? Steven Gaines?

Thanks. I see it now.
Well, you can always ask him in his thread.....  Cheesy
