Dennis was quoted as saying Smile made Pet Sounds stink in comparison.
227  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys Wild Honey(Sunshine Tomorrow) 2CD Set? on: August 29, 2017, 06:23:28 AM
Why didn't the liner notes identify the live "Aren't You Glad" as coming from the Big Sur concert 10/3/1970?  It is clearly from that performance - check out youtube Big Sur Beach Boys or the Goodbye Surfing Hello God boot set.  Could it be BRI doesn't have the rights to the Big Sur concert and so they circumvented that by not identifying the venue and date?  Kind of like how Alan Douglas didn't identify the tracks from Royal Albert Hall that he used on Hendrix in the West?

Smile was a cult legend amongst the serious Beach Boys fans and some music critics but since The Beach Boys had faded from popularity the general listening public didn't pay much attention to it and with the short lifespan of popular music at the time, it was mostly forgotten.  Until the 2 Part Rolling Stone article that detailed the Smile saga just before the release of Surf's Up brought it back to the public consciousness and reinforced and cemented the "legend" of Smile.
229  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Alternate Reality: Al, Mike, and Brian as The Beach Boys on: August 27, 2017, 11:08:46 AM
MIU seems to me a deliberate attempt by Al and Mike, with Brian's help, to go back to their classic sound and rewrite some old songs (Kona Coast = Hawaii), write some new songs in the style of the old (Woncha Come Out Tonight, Sweet Sunday, Pitter Patter) and throw in a couple of oldies also done "Beach Boys style."  There's also an attempt to update their sound to the disco era, some schmaltzy stuff courtesy of Altbach, and out of left field the gorgeous "My Diane."  I think the production and arrangements are quite good despite half the songs being substandard.

If Brian Mike and Alan had continued I think the next album would have been more of the same.
230  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Heroes and Villains Live Iteration on: August 27, 2017, 10:57:17 AM
I think Carl's live reinterpetation of Heroes is brilliant - it becomes a great rock and roll song but with the doo wop "barbershop" harmonies still in there and he even sticks "Bicycle rider" back into the chorus.  Yeah Mike oversings his part it sh9ould be more in the background but imagine if the Beach Boys had played it this way at Monterey - the crowd would have been on their feet!
231  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis Wilson's songwriting: do his songs sound \ on: August 18, 2017, 08:39:17 AM
I find for most of Dennis' solo songs it's all about feel and mood and emotion.  He's not aiming for a big crescendo chorus, or a big bang finale, the songs build slowly and take you to a place and keep you there until the song ends.  So I can see how some may find them underwhelming, but it's just as valid a way to write songs as the more commercial approach, and in a way is a more "modern" style which is why it appeals to contemporary musicians and indie acts.

234  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Does Mike Love realize he is despised by millions of fans? on: August 14, 2017, 10:03:17 AM
Does Mike Love realize that he is despised, loathed, or (in some cases) hated by millions of music fans? What is this guy's level of awareness that so many people dislike him?

Sometimes he may say something like "well some people may not like such and such thing I did, but cousin Brian was on drugs and I needed to... blah blah blah."

There seem to be some quick acknowledgments that people may not like a couple of isolated acts of his. But does this dude realize how widely despised he is by so many people?

Despised by just "millions"? You might be lowballing this...it may run into the billions. Gee, another Mike Love hate thread on Smiley Smiley.

Yeah, it's all becoming so predictable and so boring.
235  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did Van Dyke Parks contribute to the arrangements on Smile? on: August 14, 2017, 10:01:55 AM
I would imagine that he did.....why not?

Because he  has said on multiple occasions that he strictly wrote lyrics to Brian's melodies, syllable for syllable, not the music.  That said, is he just being modest and trying to give Brian his due for the music?  He hasn't been shy about claiming credit for the cellos in Good Vibrations, so if he contributed to the music of Smile, why not take ownership of it?
236  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: A little love for Mr. Love on: August 08, 2017, 06:57:25 PM
What in the flying f*** does that have to do with the topic being discussed? Take your predictable hate speech somewhere else.

Some of us who have been pushed over the edge by his latest outrage i.e. the ill-timed, solo(!) McGrath-blemished DIA, right on the heels of the glorious Sunshine Tomorrow, are reacting to this equally ill-timed thread with a NIMBY attitude. Yes, we could just refrain from comment and let you ML deniers pat him and each other on the back ad nauseum, or we can express a dissenting opinion. That is what some of us are choosing to do, here and now. If you don't like it, lump it.

I thought this thread was supposed to highlight positive aspects of Mr. Love and his contributions to The Beach Boys, not to start a new Love bashing thread.  We have multiple threads for that - see the "does Mike Love realize he's despised by millions" thread above.  Because this thread focusses on positive things about Mike doesn't mean anyone has forgotten or forgiven his bad behavior or past transgressions or personality faults.  It's more like, we all know Mike is a **** but for something different what good things can we say about him?  C'mon, it's a fun fun fun intellectual exercise - rack your brains and come up with something.  Something nice, if you dare.

Great guitarist.  Played on so many great BB songs.

Yes add this and We're Together Again to Friends and make Transcendental Meditation an instrumental with backing vocals only, and Friends surpasses Sunflower as the next best album to PS.
239  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Focus and Patience of Brian in the Studio on: July 31, 2017, 10:31:54 AM
The Beach Boys complained about having to do endless takes of the vocals in Woudn't It Be Nice, for example, but I don't remember anyone saying Brian lost his temper or was angry or shouting or cursing out anybody.  He was just relentless in trying to get on tape what he heard in his head, even if the others didn't hear it or thought they had gotten it but Brian with his "dog ears" knew it wasn't good enough yet.
240  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike and Bruce, Brian, Al and Blondie, Take a bow.... on: July 28, 2017, 07:48:00 AM
I don't think Justin Bieber not writing Pet Sounds makes his mental illness any less valid than Brian Wilson's. I just don't see the point in criticizing Bieber for quitting a tour when our favorite artist did literally the exact same thing.  Why does there have to be a competition between Justin Bieber and the Beach Boys anyway?  Why does it matter?  If you like the Beach Boys then listen to the Beach Boys, if you don't like Justin Bieber then don't listen to Justin Bieber.

Who has claimed Justin has a mental illness?  Exhaustion is not mental illness.  I would call this "millennial" syndrome.
241  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Good Vibrations - anyone made a version with the long SS tag but no hum-de-dums? on: July 27, 2017, 06:24:04 PM
The version on DCC's Endless Summer has a slightly extended ending which Steve Hoffman apparently got permission to make from the master - I guess the abrupt fade bugged him and he wanted to make it more gradual.

I'd be interested to know exactly when the myth of Carl taking the major role in producing Wild Honey started, and by whom.  Was it in the Preiss book?  I'm sure part of the myth began because of the new credit "Produced by the Beach Boys" - people made assumptions about that credit that in the face of the actual session tapes has turned out to be incorrect.  We know certain well connected individuals with  "insider knowledge" have also claimed this, but that is more recent (in the past, oh, fifteen years?).  We don't have any Jim Lockhert interviews to reference.  I don't remember anyone asking Carl about this before his death, which is a shame - I would love to hear his take on the production of Smiley through Sunflower to get some specifics on who did what, although it appears we know now what went down with Smiley and Wild Honey.  It's been reported that Brian only fully produced one track on Sunflower, Add Some Music, and on the others Carl either produced or co-produced, yet we have no tape evidence that's been released to confirm that.  Friends is like a black hole of knowledge - while I suspect Brian was still fully in control of production, apparently Murray was also involved?  Love to find out more about this era.
243  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Can't Wait Too Long on Sunshine Tomorrow on: July 13, 2017, 12:47:07 PM
All the talk about the complexity of the recording process during Smiley and Wild Honey, with modular recording and cut and paste methods, got me to thinking.  The REASONING behind Brian's modular technique during Smiley and certainly Wild Honey was very different than for Smile.  With Smile Brian wanted to be able to juggle sections within songs and between songs and replace sections with new sections, until he finally decided on a final format for the songs - as he did with Good Vibrations.  With Wild Honey it appears the songs were already structured in final form before recording - Brian just didn't want to hassle with having to get a satisfactory take of the song all the way through, with the multiple takes that would require with The Beach Boys as instrumentalists.  Easier to get one good take of the verse, one of the chorus, and use that as a template for the vocals for verse 1 and 2, and the chorus, etc.  so in a way it was less complicated for Brian, more complicated for Jim Lockhart.  Brian had always been doing The Beach Boys vocals piecemeal going back at least to Today and likely before, now he was doing the same with the instrumental backing.
244  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Paul McCartney on Vegetables on: July 11, 2017, 08:14:14 PM

I was ready to credit Sir Paul with "veggie munching" in the 2011 SMiLE Sessions box set sessionography, but since no tapes were found with his voice or reference to him, we figured I'd better not. Too hard to say that any veggie munching on his part remained on tape through the final stages of production.

Are there isolated tapes of just munching sounds? I wonder if any slight grunts which might accompany the munching sounds might be able to be audibly forensically identifiable as Paul. Seriously!

Hadn't Paul chipped a front tooth and cut his lip recently, prompting him to grow his mustache?  That might affect his munching sounds - a split second when the tooth isn't making contact and then munch would increase in intensity once the rest of the tooth bit into the veggie.  Could be used to determine if he is on there.  We need a detailed audio and spectral analysis of the munch track.

You have to give it to the Lovester for being right on the money (as he always wants to be):

He still is the dumb, no- nothing talentless Mike Love!
246  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Paul McCartney on Vegetables on: July 10, 2017, 12:23:39 PM
We know he was there during the April sessions and that he munched on vegetables for the song, he has said as much as have The Beach Boys.  I would think Brian would have wanted to preserve any Paul chatter during the sessions.  So a few possibilities come to mind.  The session Paul munched on wasn't preserved but was redone by the Boys.  The session chatter was not recorded or edited out and not preserved.  Or the tape is missing with the chatter.  It's hard to tell from the Smile Sessions release because it seems between take chatter is minimal compared to other eras of the band - the same for Smiley and Wild Honey.

John does a great version of Wild Honey singing it "Blondie"style.

The short length made it seem humbler than some of the contemporary albums of 67 - though Disraeli Gears was pretty short too.  My new Wild Honey extended album that could have been released in 67:

Wild Honey
Aren't You Glad
I Was Made to Love Her (long version)
Country Air
A Thing or Two
The Letter

Darlin
I'd Love Just Once to See You
Here Comes the Night
Let the Wind Blow
Game of Love
How She Boogalooed It
Mama Says

Can we agree on the fact that NONE of the alternate versions/alternate mixes are based on 67 mixes and all were created especially for this set?  Not that I'm complaining but at first glance someone might think some of these "early versions" or alternate mixes were actually period mixes rather than the producers of this set putting them together from the multitracks of the released versions or from fragments recorded but never finished or mixed.

The footage of Brian at Western with 8 track - do we have a date for that film?
