2076  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Lei'd In Hawaii Reels..what we have on: May 16, 2006, 07:27:27 AM
So what are we missing?  We have rehearsal (actual in Hawaii rehearsal) releases of Good Vibrations, Surfer Girl, and Their Hearts were full of Spring.  Apparently a rehearsal was recorded each night, so that's two rehearsals taped, and only three songs released and none I know of on boot.  Since it seems the rehearsal versions were actually better than the stage performances, I'd love to hear the rest of the rehearsals.

Oh, and you don't have to bid $10,000.  There's a "make offer" option - you could see if he'll take $100!

Apparently it has the credits for Guy Webster and Frank Holmes, so it probably isn't a proof (which I have, missing the credits) but one of the mass produced booklets.

No, it's not Derek Bill - I bought his booklet (well, Peter Reum's booklet, which ended up with Derek via David Leaf).  Are we sure this isn't the reprinted booklet from the 80's in the UK?

Al has said a few times that he felt that California Girls was the best example of progressive music linked with commercial appeal, and should have been where the Beach Boys stayed - which makes me think he must have thought the Smile music too far out for the Beach Boys.  Doesn't mean he didn't like it though.
2081  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is Carl Lying? on: May 04, 2006, 08:23:09 AM
If we are to believe Brian's recent interviews, Carl apparently was not supportive of the Smile project.  I would reconcile Carl's comment with Brian's this way:  Carl liked the music and lyrics, but agreed with Mike that it was not appropriate for the  Beach Boys.  Carl had a unique point of view during the  Smile era because he was on many of the sessions.  I think he saw the difficulties and self doubt and paranoia that Brian was experiencing during these sessions and may have wanted the project abandoned because of both the toll it was taking on Brian and the increasing likelihood that Brian was not going to be able to complete it.

Mike has said he liked the music, but didn't like the lyrics - if you believe his current spin on Smile, which is complicated by his legal stance that Smile is a Beach Boys property.

I misread your subject and thought this was about the THREAD - Mike Love's resistance circa Pet Sounds
2083  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Alan Boyd Thread on: April 27, 2006, 07:03:10 PM
Could this be an avenue for the 5.1 DVD-A of Surf's Up to be released?  Also, Brian's mono mixes of Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl, Little Deuce Coupe, Shut Down Vol 2, All Summer Long, and the Christmas album?

I'd also love to see a complete Capitol singles release - all the original mono mixes, A and B sides, in order of release.  We have a lot but not all of that on the Beach Boys Greatest Hits vols 1 and 2.  Maybe do a singles box ala Beatles and Rolling Stones, with CD singles reproducing the picture sleeves, and throw in a few unreleased singles/unreleased mixes as extras?
2084  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Alan Boyd Thread on: April 22, 2006, 09:40:00 PM
Well I assume two of those boxes are the master tapes for the Surf's Up and Sunflower album - surely the tapes aren't missing, they just found their way into different boxes?  Because I thought the CD's were made with the master tapes.  The Pet Sounds master tape depicted in the picture is the L.A. tape that has gone missing, presumably.

Queer USED to be considered an offensive term.  Now it's not - heard of queer eye for the striaight guy?
2086  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: "When Girls Get Together" on: April 18, 2006, 07:57:39 AM
This was originally intended for the "Last Capitol Album" or Reverberation and was on the reel as an instrumental!  I always wondered about that - were they going to leave it as an instrumental?  In some ways I think the song would be better without the lyrics - I'm not a fan of Mike's singing on this.
2087  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: "Spanish guitar" segment on: April 09, 2006, 10:56:09 AM
Oh, and I asked Alan Boyd about it and he said it had not yet been found/catalogued in the tape archive.  So either they haven't gotten to it yet, or the tape is missing (well, missing from the archive, it's out there somewhere).
2088  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: "Spanish guitar" segment on: April 09, 2006, 09:55:43 AM
According to the source of the leaked piece, it's definitely SMile vintage, but there's never been any proof offered.  It sounds more SMiley in production style.  And I don't know the source, so I can't ask him/her.

Not associated with any song that we know - probably a side trip, like Little Red Book, With Me Tonight.
2089  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys - A Vocal Element: Live 1967 on: April 01, 2006, 11:18:24 AM
Apparently this is the tour that gave Neil Young such negative impressions of Mike Love that persist to this day.
2090  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 on: March 25, 2006, 07:39:57 AM
Come on - let's all chip in, buy the screening tape for $95, and then . . . share.
2091  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys - "Cool, Cool Water" Live on David Frost, 1971 on: March 24, 2006, 02:25:25 PM
The Mess of Help video - live vocals over a backing track, right?  Didn't see a banjo or fiddle but could hear them - and the track faded, a sure sign it wasn't live.  Or were the vocals prerecorded too?

The Cool Cool Water clip looked all live to me.
2092  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys' response to Sunflower reception on: March 23, 2006, 07:03:40 AM
If they had just released Seasons in the Sun they would have had a top ten hit and their popularity may have been restored two years before it did start coming back.
2093  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys' response to Sunflower reception on: March 23, 2006, 07:02:19 AM
Slip on Through was released as a single - the followup to Add Some Music.  It failed, as did Forever when released later (as the Bside to Cool Cool Water - what were they thinking releasing Cool Cool Water as a single?)
2094  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sunflower double-LP on: March 22, 2006, 12:48:01 PM
For a double album, I'd leave Sunflower as one LP, than add on :

1. Cottonfields (single)
2. Loop de Loop
3. I'm going Your Way
4. Good Time
5. Back Home
6. Break Away
7. Over the Waves

1. San Miguel
2. Games Two Can Play
3. I Just Got My Pay
4. Soulful Old Man Sunshine
5. The Lord's Prayer
6. Celebrate the News
2095  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys' response to Sunflower reception on: March 22, 2006, 12:33:34 PM
My understanding is that Brian's involvement in Sunflower, while obviously present, is overstated.  Stephen Desper could enlighten us more about that, but looking through his book I don't see much difference between Brian's involvement in Sunflower and in Surf's Up (in terms of producing, singing, and playing on the tracks).  The major difference is that Brian wrote more songs for Sunflower - but on some of them his role may be exaggerated (like Deirdre - I believe Bruce has said he contributed one line of lyric for the song).  Carl produced the non Dennis and non Bruce tracks, with the exception of Add Some Music which was Brian's baby.  If I have this wrong, somebody step in and correct me!
2096  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: anyone see BW in late 70s? on: March 20, 2006, 03:48:54 AM
I saw him perform with the Boys in either 80 or 81 in Washington DC (the mall concert for 4th of July) and Brian sang God Only Knows (Carl was absent for some reason) as well as Sloop John B.

Sorry - didn't see that qualifier in your list.

Hard Times is a Blondie/Ricky song that can be found on Get The Boot - recorded after Holland, it's a great song - probably my favorite of the Blondie/Ricky songs recorded with the  Beach Boys.
2099  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: March 14, 2006, 09:45:23 AM
A speedy recovery to you, Stephen!  Your input on this board is treasured by all of us Beach Boy freaks!

Thanks Mark.  I look forward to hearing this hopefully on a DVD-A or SACD release!
