126  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How did people get the Smile tapes back in the day for bootlegs? on: March 06, 2018, 08:25:28 AM
First leakage was of the "Fire" tapes - Byron Preiss researchers were given a Smile tape in return for a copy of Phil Spector's "This Must Be the Night" - a favorite of Brian's and a song he subsequently covered.

The next big escape from the vaults was around 88 when Brian's solo album came out - Eugene Landy was floating the idea of a Smile recordings release and it was even announced in the press.  Mark Linett went through the tapes and complied a cassette of Smile sessions for consideration for release - this was circulated within Capitol and eventually passed into collector's hands, some say from Eugene himself (so he did do one good thing during his time treating Brian).

The third big vault raid was when someone with access to the Brother tape library made stereo copies of the 2, 3, and 4 track sessions tapes of all the Capitol albums, up to 20/20.  This was released as the Unsurpassed Masters series on Sea of Tunes.  It's unclear who did the copying - it was rumored that someone working on the American Band documentary who was putting together the soundtrack and therefor had access had done it, but Mark and Alan deny that - so it's kind of a mystery who engineered this particular, and massive, leak of tapes.  But there were three Cd's of Good Vibrations sessions and four CD's of Smile tapes under the Sea of Tunes banner.
127  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: A definitive list of songs Mike Love won co-writing credit for? on: February 26, 2018, 11:15:29 AM
That's on the list which is roughly chronological not alphabetically arranged.

I know California Girls is on the list. But there is a star next to it. Implying he has mentioned it but hasn't received credit. But he has!

The star means that he mentioned it in a pre law suit interview - which is important because the songs he mentions before the lawsuit was even filed are more likely to be indeed co-writes, rather than the songs that were later negotiated in court.  All of the songs in the first list he did receive credit for after the lawsuit.

If you manage to find a copy I hope you will share!!

With the 1966 and 1967 copy write archive releases done unfortunately it seems very unlikely we are going to get this.  But didn't this come out on some advance copy CD-r's of the Smile Sessions box set?
130  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Re: selling items (legitimate items) on the board on: February 11, 2018, 08:07:04 AM
I sympathize with the arguments about the board not wanting to get involved in disputes - but how does the Hoffman board get around this?

Maybe linking stuff for sale to the Hoffman board might work but you need to be a registered user of the board to access the classifieds sections.

I'd just rather try to sell BB stuff to other BB fanatics who are on this board than some ananymous person on eBay, although when you think about it most likely anyone interested in a pastmasters cd or a rare B.B. Item on eBay or Hoffman would also be a big BB fan as well.
131  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / selling items (legitimate items) on the board on: February 09, 2018, 07:59:49 AM
I noticed in the general discussions area someone is trying to sell something.  wouldn't it be more appropriate, and convenient for those looking to buy something, if there was a separate buy/sell/looking for section on the board (as there is on the Steve Hoffman Forums, for example)?  We could call it "Marketplace" (a little too obvious, but what the hey).  People unloading their Pastmasters, Smile box sets, limited edition vinyls, C50 tour live CDs, even posters and memorabilia.

132  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Do you have any regrets? on: February 08, 2018, 08:07:21 AM
mine is not seeing the Blondie/Ricky touring band of 72-74.
133  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What One Question Would You Ask Mike in an Interview? on: January 27, 2018, 10:41:18 AM
Which instrument do you feel you really "made your own" - the saxophone or the woo woo machine?
134  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Session work with Roy Wood on: January 26, 2018, 08:45:51 AM
Copied from Steve Hoffman forum :  I was reliably informed that while BRI has the material Roy and some other members of Wizzard recorded with Brian Wilson during his so-called "Bedroom Tapes" era in their archive, they couldn't put any of this on the Made In California retrospective or later packages as a result of a certain musician involved with these sessions being embarrassed by the results of the high profile collaborations, since he expected a lot more from the time spent with someone regarded a personal musical hero.

Roy has in general been opposed to releasing old outtakes of material with the Move, ELO, Wizzard and solo projects, to the frustration of record companies who know that fans would love to hear some of these things.
135  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: In The Back of My Mind 1975 on: January 08, 2018, 06:30:07 PM
I really like the "new" section, and overall key/tone it takes. It reminds me of a Frank Sinatra style.

This this would have totally fit in with the big band numbers on Adult Child.  Maybe start it as solo piano and voice and then have the big band come in.
136  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Saturday challenge: When and where was this? on: January 06, 2018, 02:13:07 PM
I would say summer of 1973 as We Got Love is in the set list.
137  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Love You on: December 05, 2017, 09:07:05 AM
Don't see it as modular.  The songs seem to have been written as complete songs, demo'd that way by Brian, no switching about of parts from one song to the other.  don't know if they were RECORDED modular like Smiley Smile and some of Wild Honey was, recording parts of the song and editing them together rather than performing them all the way through.
138  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 2017 copyright extension release details? on: December 05, 2017, 06:36:08 AM
From Lee's post on PSF:

According to the new winter edition of Endless Summer Quarterly, published today:

Sunshine Tomorrow 2 - 29 additional tracks from the Smiley Smile sessions, the Lei'd in Hawaii Wally Heider Studio sessions, and the Wild Honey sessions, including the unreleased "Good News"
Live Sunshine - 109 performances from 7 shows in 5 states during the 1967 tour

109 performances? How many discs is this going to be...lol

The 7 shows should fit on four discs.
139  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What did the beach boys do better than the beatles? on: December 03, 2017, 11:52:14 AM
The Beach Boys sang better than the Beatles.

John, Paul and George wrote better lyrics then any of The Beach Boys.

In 1965and 1966 when both Bands were at their creative peak The Beach Boys peak was higher than that of the Beatles.

The Beach Boys sang ballads and harmony better than Bech Boys.  But on the rockers both John and Paul out sang any and all of the Boys including Carl.

At his best Brian and his collaborators wrote lyrics that matched or surpassed the best of the Beatles' lyrics.  But at his worst Brian and the other writers in The Beach Boys outstank any Beatles lyric by a wide margin.
140  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al Jardine Solo Concert Series on: November 29, 2017, 06:21:54 AM

Nice write up but of course there is a glaring error in the article - Al played lead guitar in the Beach Boys?

Would love to see this show but the chance of it getting to New Orleans is probably nil.
141  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: VDP on Twitter on: November 11, 2017, 08:45:50 AM
The explicit decision with Anthology was to tell the Beatles story from the 4 Beatles point of view, no talking heads, with the only two exceptions George Martin and Neil as they were with them all the way through their recording career and both had a claim to being the "5th" Beatle.  If Mal had been alive I wonder if he would have been included as well.
142  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love - Unleash the Love - Due November 17 - w/ 2nd Disc of BB Remakes on: November 03, 2017, 08:42:52 AM
The issue of drugs and their effect on the BAND and on their OUTPUT is interesting and not addressed by Mike or just about anyone associated with the band.  For instance, an argument can be made that drugs (along with mental illness) was a major factor in the collapse of the Smile project - yet Smiley Smile was apparently a "drug" ALBUM that was heavily influenced by hash and marijuana use by the entire band (with the exception of Al), including Mike.  Mike DID inhale despite his anti-drug stance now.

What other albums were almost derailed, or songs left unfinished or in a rough state but still released, because of drugs?  What songs feature vocals by someone clearly impaired by drugs or alcohol (Love You's Carl leads come to mind).  What tours were disasters because of drugs (the Australia tour with Carl out of it in what 77 or 78?).  Was the Maharishi tour decision disaster influenced by drugs or solely by Mike and the band's love of T.M.?  What role did drugs play in the cancellation of the Monterey appearance?
143  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys Today 1993 TV Movie on: November 02, 2017, 06:01:22 AM
Interesting Al clip talking about the confusing transition from Smile to Smiley Smile, and I think Carl pretty much nails it on why Brian couldn't complete Smile.
144  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: VDP on Twitter on: November 01, 2017, 06:18:37 PM
I assume he is referring to the fact Brian asked him to contribute lyrics so Brian was helping him a relative unknown rather than Van Dyke helping him - and also the fact Brian wrote the melodies and Van Dyke then wrote the lyrics syllable for syllable to fit the melody, so that "helped" him rather than the other way around.
145  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Help Please! Some Smile questions on: November 01, 2017, 05:31:42 AM
I believe the source of the theory that there was to be no silence between tracks but instead there would be "linking tracks" was none other than Dominic Priore.  Check out LLVS.  As Smile material began surfacing, there were lots of short pieces of music that did not clearly belong to a particular song on the 12 track list - Heroes related chants (Part 2 variations), Barnyard, the January 3rd Heroes sessions, the intro to Heroes, Dada, etc.  Since Dominic's preconceived bias was that the album was finished (and he claimed there was a final mixing session in April 67 which was cancelled), then he needed to find a place for all these fragments and so they became "link tracks" and the songs would go immediately from one to another with no silence between tracks.
146  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sunshine Tomorrow She's Going Bald? on: October 31, 2017, 12:12:09 PM
These digital only archive releases are tailor made for collecting odds and ends like SMile mixes and sessions not on the box set - these things usually only appeal to the hard core fans and what hard core fan worthy of the name wouldn't want unreleased Smile stuff?  It's a no brainer.
147  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sunshine Tomorrow She's Going Bald? on: October 30, 2017, 05:42:50 PM
I thought there was a stereo release of Wild Honey already as well. This is not so much a complaint. I really like this release. Just seemed odd that She’s Going Bald was the only song from Smiley not touched as far as I can tell.

stay tuned

Shocked What can it mean?!?!

Archival release with Smile sessions and mixes not on the box (Barnyard in stereo with backing vocals, the 3 minute mono mix of Child for example), Smiley sessions and alternate mixes and outtakes (there's a With Me Tonight still unreleased), complete Hawaii live concerts and rehearsals!  I'm ready for it Mark and Alan!

149  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Does anyone have info about this Smile vinyl bootleg? on: October 14, 2017, 10:12:52 AM
I have this but the cover is not the "back cover" and a plain white cover on the back as the poster has linked to but this cover:

http://www.rootsvinylguide.com/ebay_items/beach-boys-smile-capitol-double-lp-set-sea-of-tunes-rare-release

with white labels instead of black/no labels and the smileshop on the front.

If you ask him I'll bet Mike would sign the Tshirt for you.
