I prefer the old school and the pop rappers and some of the alt-rap.....very little of the underground rap and even less of the jazz-rap. Comedy rap tunes are always a hoot. As far as commercial rap goes, I like most of it up to Tupac

I'm with you on all this.

I like some hip hop, too, but not Kanye. Most of what I like is from the earlier 90s, or older stuff from the 80s sometimes. And pretty much anything Prince Paul has a part in.

It wasn't the censorship decision that I wasn't sure about. I just can't find it in me to like Kanye. I just can't.

Agreed on both counts. Tribute albums almost always suck from start to finish (See: This Bird Has Flown, the Rubber Soul 40th Anniversary disc from this year), but this one was very good. The Teenage Fanclub and Jad Fair version of "My Life is Starting Over Again" was one of my favorite tracks from last year. It f@cking* rocked.

f*ck foda.

Well, next time he makes it this way, I just might try that.

By the way, what did you think of the Discovered Covered album last year?

I'm not saying he isn't a dork. Or that he isn't strong. But I severely doubt he's making an attempt to be seen as a dork and thus get our laughter.

Um, I don't think Johnston is asking to be looked at or considered a dork.

Bill Ricchini's excellent Tonight I Burn Brightly album.

Do Daniel Johnston tunes count as being "funny"?

Probably about as much as making fun of Brian does.

There's So Many (surprised nobody has mentioned this one!)

I almost did, but went with (I think) Melt Away instead. I do like There's So Many quite a bit.

Maybe they mistakenly thought it was a Mike Love co-write.

You guys are like me and Chris D used to be. Hogging the board, using it as a conversation-space. Just be prepared for engendered hatred.

"And I'm so-unaccustomed to hatred," he said sarcastically.

Isn't Brian confused at a lot of maneuvers?

So it would seem.

Posts like those will give you hip cred on Male Ego.

And lynched on the Blueboard. All this is that.

The years 1980-present for the Beach Boys...and no, I'm not laughing with them.

If we're poking fun at his, ah, idiosyncracies, how about the great bow on one knee during the first Smile show, as seen on Beautiful Dreamer? Brian seems awfully confused at that maneuver.

Me. Working out an arrangement on piano.

I'd rather be listening to something else, believe me.

Already completely uninterested. Next.

I find him funny, too, but not always intentionally. I mean, don't YOU laugh at him in the American Band documentary?

Seeing that for the first time was among the greatest moments of my life. Somebody should use a pic of him from that as an avatar.
8822  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Favorite unreleased Beach Boys/BW song on: December 30, 2005, 11:47:21 AM
Never heard it or heard of it. Era, style, general comments on it, etc.?

Chronic . . .what? . . .cles of Narnia.

Ah, the omnipresent video. Even NPR was talking about it yesterday. Talk about saturation.
8824  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Van Dyke letter to NYT redux on: December 30, 2005, 11:18:41 AM
I think most people who are referring to it don't mean simply in that letter, but in the whole of their exposure to him.
8825  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Charles Manson - Music Only. on: December 30, 2005, 11:17:48 AM
I think I ended up writing to some company and asking for free stuff.

No recollection as to whether it worked.
