6626  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Zombies - Odessey and Oracle on: June 15, 2008, 07:30:35 AM
I think it's great. I only heard of it through some covers: Of Montreal did "Friends of Mine" and Great Lakes did "This Will Be Our Year." Of course I know "Time of the Season," but actually never liked it much (still don't, in fact) and had no idea where it came from. But once I heard those other tunes and saw they were written by the Zombies, I looked them up and saw they were on the same album. Bought it and it became a real favorite for a while.

You guys are having a great discussion here. It's good to see it--no name-calling! I tend to lean left politically but also do believe that without continuing to (as sensibly as possible) use our own (U.S., that is) oil supplies, we're digging ourselves a deeper hole in terms of reliance on unstable and unfriendly nations. One small glimmer of hope I have is from some stories I've read this week that the oil supplies beneath North Dakota are increasingly being retrieved and with technological advances may bring more still. I don't think we can rest easy knowing there is more domestic oil to use/waste, but hopefully we can continue to reduce dependence on the Irans and Saudi Arabias of the world while we find another source of power.       (North Dakota story: http://www.startribune.com/business/19577194.html?location_refer=$sectionName )

Didn't want to start a new thread about it--Al Jardine will not be on today's show--but just a reminder for anyone interested that the Heroes & Villains internet radio show is on luxuriamusic.com in 25 minutes (3 pm Central time, 1 pm Pacific, 4 pm Eastern, figure out the others from those!). There is a chat room there that can be a good time. Listen in and chat along. (It's free.)
6629  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: A new generation of US bands cites the Beach Boys as a huge inspiration. on: June 14, 2008, 12:31:19 PM
I agree that most of these are the typical reference-drop bands. Nothing wrong with them--I'm always glad to see bands working whether I like them or not (The world doesn't need more accountants, lawyers or customer service representatives--it needs more working artists!)--but if you're looking for something anywhere near the quality of the late 60s Beach Boys, these aren't the bands. They're just bands that like that period of music, and in whom you can hear the influence. Personally, I think looking for "today's [old band]" is always a mistake, because you're inherently going backward. I believe in continuing to enjoy what has come before and listening to what comes now for what it is, and letting it become what it becomes as time passes. Maybe they're passing fads, maybe they grow in stature with age, whatever. It's music: enjoy what you enjoy, don't listen to what you don't enjoy.

Help me rhonda sucks. Sounds just like they did it in the early seventies to me.
During Chuck Kelley's interview with Al, that is what Al said he was doing. So it's not a coincidence or anything, he just wanted to do it that way. I wasn't thrilled with it, but I thought it was fine. Frankly, I liked it more than several of the other tunes I've heard samples from, including "Don't Go Near the Sea," which I am about to listen to (the sample of) again, but when Chuck played it, I thought it sounded pretty annoying/cheesy. Maybe it will grow on me. I definitely don't think it sounds anything like a hit--at least not in today's world.
6631  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Surf's Up on: June 14, 2008, 08:26:57 AM
I love it, too. Ditto for "Feet." They're silly takes on somewhat serious subject matter (at least "water" is serious subject matter...although podiatrists might say both are serious), and I suppose that rubs certain people the wrong way. But I think they're clever, fun and really, really good performances. To a certain extent, they're what makes me disappointed in how long it's taken Al to get anything new released, and that now that he's about to, it's barely new. These, along with some other material of his from the late 60s and early 70s, show that he's got a lot of great ideas and doesn't have to revert to remakes and cliched "folk" takes on things.

I'd count them, and I love them.

Sorry for the public bickering, everyone. I was really just making a joke in response to Chuck before getting carried away with Dave in KC. Now I'll try to be nice.
6634  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Vocals on \ on: June 11, 2008, 07:18:12 PM
I've seen numerous discussions about when Brian's voice really changed, and I don't know if anyone has a real, definitive answer. The unreleased "Rollin Up To Heaven (Hard Times)" dates from, I think, 1974, and it is different by then. But he is singing pretty well in the early '70s. So it's narrowed, I think, to '73 or '74. I have no doubt someone will happily correct me, though, if I'm wrong.

You're so cute. If you mistake my posts for bitter ones, I guess you're not just opposed to my taste, but somehow unable to understand me and everything I say. That's fine. I am truly glad you lived when you did and enjoyed what you enjoy: I'd never begrudge anyone his or her pleasure. But neither will I worship at the altar of your past, bemoan my present or in any way try to hide my real thoughts just to be in line with your nostalgia.
6636  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Vocals on \ on: June 11, 2008, 06:12:12 PM
Welcome aboard. Without getting specific to those tunes, I can tell you that the Beach Boys' engineer of the time, Stephen Desper, has said that they often played with tape speeds in vocals. I don't think the lead in "Take..." is sped up, though. Al is doing what I'd call an animated voice, though--certainly playing around to make a fun song. I know some people here don't like it, but while I know it is a bit gimmicky, I think it's cool.

and put in Zappa's (Mothers') first album.

Speaking of awesome! Brilliant. Masterpiece.
6638  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Unheard Beach Boys to be made available to the public on: June 11, 2008, 05:11:08 PM
.I think there's a Hendrix one I don't have yet...
It's awesome! It was released under the name "Radio One" about 10-15 years ago, and has some of my favorite Hendrix recordings ever (including a cool version of "Day Tripper").
6639  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: POB Article on: June 10, 2008, 09:35:40 PM
I have no problem finding them. Paying for them, well that's a different story. Some of them approach $10! Remarkable, considering I remember being a teenager in the early '90s and buying my music magazines for $2-3.
6640  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How legit are the lawsuit songwriting credits? on: June 10, 2008, 06:21:41 PM
I don't think you can make it an issue where you're judging the value of those lives taken (or damaged, etc.), or for that matter the seriousness of the offense of the person about whom we're debating credit. Manson was a murderer. If he had been, say, an abusive husband but not a killer, would he deserve credit? What if he were a murderer, but a Robin Hood style killer, only killing the bad to benefit the good? That kind of reasoning, I think, is inherently faulty: these are separate issues. One is credit for a factual accomplishment. The other is how the person is judged for his or her actions. They don't cross.
6641  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How legit are the lawsuit songwriting credits? on: June 10, 2008, 02:46:37 PM
So it would be OK for me to cover, say, "I'm Beggin' You Please", change the lyric a little and not give Brian any credit ?  Manson wrote "Cease To Exist", and Dennis adapted it into "NLNTL". He may not be a model citizen, but Manson deserves to be credited.

Obviously Manson does have credit now. Clearly everyone has their views but let me put it this way, Manson was reponsible for the murder of several people (I'm guessing about 6 or something but even one is tragic) so to be honest I couldn't care less if Manson wrote every Beatles song and wasn't credited. When it comes down to it, a persons life is more important than a stupid songwriting credit. Yes Manson wrote it but I don't care that he wasn't credited considering what he did to those people. Murderers, rapists, paedophiles etc.. are the lowest scum of this earth and I'm sorry but I just don't care that Manson wasn't credited. I feel sorry for a guy like Stephen Kalinich who wrote All I Want To Do but wasn't given credit at the time.

By which reasoning, Phil Spector's entire output should now be buried in a deep pit and never mentioned again.
I've got to agree with Andrew here. It isn't about whether people like Manson--I doubt much of anyone does. Giving him credit for songwriting doesn't mean the same thing as liking him or even liking his songwriting. It just means being factually accurate: if Manson is the writer, it should be said that Manson is the writer. Kobe Bryant is still suspected of having committed a rape several years ago. If in tonight's game against the Celtics he scores 45 points, the scorekeeper ought to list his name before that "45," in the box score, not next to Sasha Vujacic's out of some kind of disgust for alleged rapists.

I don't know about biased. That implies I don't give things a fair shake to things, like prejudice. Opinionated and not too concerned if those opinions are popular might be a better description. And most amusing of ally, my opinions seem to be almost always diametrically opposed to yours.
6643  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys intrumentals on: June 10, 2008, 01:17:08 PM
I'm not a fan of the earlier garage/surf rock kind of instrumentals so much, but I love the two Pet Sounds tunes and the aforementioned "Summer Means New Love." And I'm with Aegir on that one in that the guitar tone is fantastic--a real favorite sound of mine.
6644  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How much can BW be expected to sell? on: June 10, 2008, 01:06:12 PM
^ That's probably true. Aging and awkward only attracts a certain (and small, I'd guess) set of people. I'd think more heavily edited print, video or radio material might work better than those live shows--at least you can remove when he doesn't seem to understand the question, or answers with one of his typical abrupt answers.

You all should listen to Heroes & Villains, it's on every Saturday from 1-2 pm (pacific). Lots of cool chatters in the chatroom...

Chuck
I am undoubtedly the coolest of those chatters.  Afro    Some would disagree.
6646  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How much can BW be expected to sell? on: June 10, 2008, 12:54:56 PM
I think that, more than for any other artist, the album reviews will be extremely important. If they'll be mostly negative or indifferent, it will be an album for hardcore fans only. If there will be reviews like "His best new work in 40 years!" or "This time Brian's REALLY back!"

That's the problem with new Brian Wilson product. BW'88 and Imagination were strongly hyped as comebacks. GIOMH not so much, but I don't remember reading a single bad review.

How many times since 1976 are you able to claim that Brian's back and make people pay attention?
I don't remember a single good review for GIOMH. As I recall, they were mostly along the lines of "anything new from Brian Wilson is welcome, but this has some good and plenty of bad; rough vocals, guest appearances, the highlight is "Soul Searchin' ... wtf is up with these lyrics?" As for hyping the album as a comeback album or not, I think that only affects people who know him to be needing a comeback, which is the same demographic that is most likely to buy it regardless. No 18-year-old or 25-year-old who doesn't yet know B. Wilson needs or needed any sort of comeback will buy into that talk (especially since if any story would hook them, it was the one pushed for BWPS). For those would-be fans, they need to get contemporary artists to speak up about BW's influence and to get those blogs and websites to review the album positively and try to explain that he is an important master--sort of how those kids view Johnny Cash, Tom Waits and to a certain extent Bob Dylan or Merle Haggard.

What did Al have to say about a possible Beach Boys reunion?  I was not able to listen on Saturday.
Mostly just that he'd be interested in it, and that he suggested it for the Pet Sounds 40th but Mike nixed it. And he apologized to fans for all the lawsuits and whatnot.
6648  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Miles Davis on: June 08, 2008, 08:38:28 PM
^ Yes! It's fantastic. I haven't listened to that album much the past few years, but when I got it (maybe 2000?) I was just in love.
6649  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who would you like to see write a book? on: June 08, 2008, 04:55:19 PM
My pick would be David Anderle. He appears to be both knowlegable and articulate, but, most importantly, honest. At the end of the Brian Wilson A & E documentary, he made a statement (and I'm paraphrasing), "The Brian Wilson you see today isn't the real Brian Wilson", or something to that effect. Does anyone have the exact quote? Anybody who would have the guts to say something, that he knows will be heard by Brian, and become part of the permanent record, gets my vote.
I felt like, especially in the Smile doc, he always seemed really pro-Brian. Was he critical of Brian in any way, or just saying it as if to say Brian was a drug casualty (or some such thing)? Because if it were in a sympathetic way, I wouldn't be surprised. But if it were a "yeah, his work really isn't very good anymore" kind of way, that would really be be shocking. I saw that doc, but it was years ago. I don't own it.

Desper (again), Darian Sahanaja, Mark Linett, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, Mike Love, Van Dyke Parks, Jeff Foskett, Billy Hinsche, et cetera. I'd love as many people as possible to address the same questions or topics to give the most well rounded views story as possible, even if they all conflict with one another in the details. Then a giant Anthology style book (or better, film series).
