A guy tries to show off his writing and gets criticized for typos and nonsense. Tough crowd.

There's a TV interview with Glen where he says he played bass and sang falsetto, and how hard it was because the bass is so low and the falsetto is so high.
I'd assume he was joking, because that doesn't make any sense.

Assuming your company is going to properly compensate you for the dramatically higher cost of living, I think it's a GREAT opportunity.

I swear on my father's grave I never saw that before.  Shocked  Hot damn !
Your psychic gifts are amazing. Quick, what am I going to do today?

Something I forgot to add - this is the first I've ever heard of Brian 'finishing' TLOS in Melinda's absence. Anyone else here recall seeing anything like that ?
Nope. And I'm very strongly doubting "did everything in a single week" as well. Worked on it a lot, sure. But come on. And he did all the vocals for Orange Crate Art in a single day. And Captain Beefheart composed Trout Mask Replica in 8 hours and took 2 years to teach it to his band, too...

Thanks to the resurrection of this thread, I am reminded of how awesome I was in Feb. '08. And obviously, I had no recollection of any of it. Demon wine.

If Melinda were so PR savvy, she wouldn't be hated by so many fans.
6510  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did Brian really say that? on: July 25, 2008, 04:42:17 PM
Whoops. I meant to say "vocal tracks" double tracked -- as in, Brian's leads.

Again, not saying I agree with the criticism. This was just the scuttlebutt at the time.
No, even saying "vocal tracks" wouldn't change my post. "Live" albums have a long history of being far less than live on most fronts. It wouldn't be above standard practice to double vocals.
6511  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did Brian really say that? on: July 25, 2008, 04:12:11 PM

7.) She wanted tracks on the "Live at the Roxy" album double-tracked, thus showing her ignorance of live recordings.

Let's change everything after the comma to "thus showing she had a thorough understanding of typical rock or pop "live" recordings"

The only Melinda I know is the one presented by journalists, PR people and fans. Therefore I don't know Melinda. I assume the best of her. She's probably not much different than any of us (except wealthier and married to a great pop songwriter).

-That, and Brian quitting the road.
That's closer to a high point in my eyes. He created what is by far my favorite of his work after quitting the road. Those songs almost certainly would not have come out in the form they did had Brian continued to tour. Considering Pet Sounds and the Smile material are what got me interested in the Beach Boys, and that I didn't even like anything previous (and hadn't heard anything after), there's a good chance I wouldn't be a fan at all if that hadn't happened.

6515  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BW's contributions to music on: July 22, 2008, 08:38:45 PM
Brian's music influences the Beatles, who in turn influenced every other band on the planet.
But--and again, this is just argument--that's bad logic. I mean, Miles Davis also praised Ahmad Jamal as an influence. Miles influenced the world. Are we to say Ahmad Jamal influenced the world? (I do think Brian had a big influence on pop musicians. I'm not arguing that, just the logic.)
6516  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BW's contributions to music on: July 22, 2008, 07:57:49 PM
I'm not saying people need to bend down and kiss Brian's feet for his music, but I don't understand why people on a BB message board would argue against something like Brian's impact on music.

Just saying!
I don't think anyone is.
6517  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BW's contributions to music on: July 22, 2008, 07:47:16 PM
Well I agree with you almost 100 percent. One thing I would change though is to say that Brian post Smile did influence a lot of people. Wild Honey was one of the first of the rock and roll back to the roots albums. Friends had him incorporate jazz, Sunflower was sonically one of the best albums ever released, and though I don't care for it myself, Love You had the synth and DIY mentality that some have cited to be very ear opening. Perhaps these recordings have not reached a mass audience, but as far as influencing the music world, I think they have.

This is purely me being argumentative, but: 1) Just because Wild Honey was among the first back-to-roots albums doesn't mean it influenced others to follow. I've never heard of anyone saying it inspired them to drop the B.S. and return to playing rock. 2) A bossa nova beat on one track is hardly incorporating jazz. 3) Sunflower was sonically great, but how did it influence anyone? It was a flop. 4) Love You had synth ... but again, did it have fans? NOW these things have people going back and examining them, but it's hard to say that they had much influence at the time.

'Really great Pop Songs'

Everyone has opinions, but that is quite simply a understatement.

Or maybe you devalue "really great," because it's no small compliment. I knew my answer wasn't going to be popular (wrong board for that), but I stand behind it.
6519  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BW's contributions to music on: July 22, 2008, 03:40:50 PM
I think it's important to keep Brian's contributions in perspective. He didn't invent anything that comes to my mind, anyway. He wrote really great pop songs, often that were more sophisticated in their arrangements than a lot of other pop songs. But you hear things like how his chordal arrangements were "advanced" and how he used non-root notes in the bass parts ... none of that is remotely innovative. There isn't anything particularly difficult about making extended chords, or singing them, once you're used to it. And inversions in the bass are as old as western harmony (i.e., 500+ years). Brian Wilson wrote really great pop songs. But he didn't change the way music works or anything. That's just hype.

It's just an online board. It's not really worth getting upset about.
[applause]  It's so unbelievably important, I am repeatedly amazed that anyone cares. Like Blueboard? Read it and post there. Don't? OK: don't read it or post there.

Has anyone mentioned that their cover of "Ooh Child" is actually even better than the incredible original?

A-fucking-men.
6523  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's Back on: July 19, 2008, 05:14:10 PM
I really don't like the lyrics, but it the refrain is really pretty. I think the first time I heard it was in the Endless Harmony doc, and I was wondering what it was, where I could find it, etc., just for that bit. Turns out I don't like the bulk of it as much, but it's fine. And I don't doubt Mike's intentions on it. Sure, he was trying to cash in on "Brian is Back," but so were the others, including Brian. Their jobs are commercial ones: they try to cash in on their music. Brian was trying to cash in on Pet Sounds, but nobody doubts the intentions behind those songs, do they? It's not impossible to write music you believe in while trying for commercial success.

The Love & Mercy cover looks like Daniel Johnston's art work.

Nah, there's no Captain America or big eyeball!
6525  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Lowest point in the BB career? on: July 18, 2008, 10:08:43 AM
I think it all comes down to everyone just being a bit too hard on The Beach Boys in general. ...
I honestly don't think the "worst" Beach Boys stuff is half bad.
I feel exactly the opposite. I think fans are too easy on the Beach Boys, and that not only is the worst Beach Boys stuff really bad, but a lot of the stuff even in the prime years wasn't very good compared to their best. It isn't some big deal or hatred I have or anything, I'm just saying that's how I look at their music: some brilliant, a lot good, the majority in the upper mediocre range, quite a bit of bad and some absolute atrocities. No big deal, just opinions. Just funny how people's--even who are both fans--vary so dramatically over the same thing. As to the latter things though, about not being able to sustain greatness, I do agree with that. I don't think they (or much of anyone else) did, and it's ridiculous to expect them (or anyone) to. But choosing a lowest point doesn't have to be some mean-spirited thing, or an assault on the band in general. You could do a "choose the lowest point of Pet Sounds" if you felt like it, or "worst bit of your favorite song." It's all just for discussion; it's not like much of this--a fan message board devoted to a pop band--matters in the least.
