I don't know whether it's what KDS means--I won't speak for him--but the change out of Daylight Savings Time is more a slap in the face than anything else. Obviously, one hour's difference isn't such a big deal. But it comes in November, when the days are already naturally getting shorter. So we're only a few months from when the daylight lasts until 8, 9 p.m., and all of a sudden it's getting dark at 5:30--then literally overnight, it's 4:30! That's what makes it so depressing, I think. It just piles on an already depressingly inevitable road to darkness.

Thankfully, it's cyclical. While throughout winter it's usually dark both when I leave the house for work and by the time I get home from work, today I was noticing how it was still light outside at around 5 pm. It's a little thing, but I'll take it happily. In a few months, that'll be 6, 7. Right now I'm happy every time it's above freezing--and damn near jubilant when it's almost 40 F, as it was today--but in a few months we'll be in the 50s, then 60s, everyday. (Then it'll hit summer, we'll get streaks of 90 degree days and nights above 70, and I'll complain about that.)

Anyway, that's my take on it. It's not the hour here or there. It's the cumulative effect combined with that one, suddenly shifted hour of Daylight Savings Time.

I do this every year (since 2012). Same as always, if it gets slightly longer every year: one song per artist, done with running order / listenability in mind (so it might not be my favorites, exactly, but close enough). Should be something for almost everyone, styles-wise.

Justin Holiday is another wing whom I'd forgotten. And I have to admit he's all right. Not good as a key player, but a decent low-rotation guy. Too bad he'll probably start...

And when I say rebuild, I'm not even saying they necessarily should have blown it all up. But they took a tepid approach that got nothing done. They could have moved some of the Thibs players for Hoiberg-style players and tried to retool on the fly. But no. They half-rebuilt, half-didn't.

They just haven't had a coherent strategy.

First, they went all-in with Thibs and that style. They won big. They alientated Thibs and made clear they had no intention of retaining him, to the point that it was obvious Hoiberg was the coach-in-waiting even while Thibs was still there.

They hire Hoiberg, but leave him with more or less Thibs' roster. He struggles.

Rather than really rebuild to suit Hoiberg's style, they build last year's ridiculous Frankenstein's Roster with Wade, Rondo, Butler, and Lopez, plus Grant, Portis, Valentine, etc.

At least now they're really rebuilding. But they're about two years too late.

The second-worst team? Probably Atlanta, who has moved almost everyone who's any good. Their best player, arguably by far, is now Dennis Schroder. Yikes.

Then it's into the Brooklyn, New York, Phoenix, Dallas, Orlando, Sacramento, LAL territory, where I could imagine anywhere from 23 to 33 wins depending on how the chips fall, who gets hurt, etc.

Yeah I wasn't actually sure what his point was. I thought it was based on our conversation about bands going out of their comfort zones or trying to stay modern, like the Monkees did in the 80s.

If Chicago even tries to win games (at the front office level .. obviously the people on the floor should try), they're beyond idiots. They need to win 15 games and get that chance at a high pick. I actually think they were stupid to retain Mirotic, too, since he's a serviceable veteran. They should have let him go, or maybe done a sign-and-trade at most, so they could get more playing time for Bobby Portis or Cristiano Felicio or whoever. They should let LaVine rehab until after All Star break. Role with Kris Dunn turnovers and air-balled floaters. Laugh as Denzel Valentine tries and fails on defense.

This team most of all needs new management. I wonder whether "consultant" Doug Collins wasn't actually brought in to advise ownership on the futures of Paxson and Forman. And by advise on, I mean walk into their offices and fire them.

I think injuries are going to be the story of the 76ers season. If Embiid plays less than two-thirds of the season, if Simmons gets hurt again, if an aging Redick gets banged up, if some of the other backcourt role players (Bayless, Stauskas) miss substantial time and thin out the rotation, they could be terrible. But there are so many more options this season, and obviously so much better high-end talent, I think at least high 30s is a realistic win total. And a playoff run if everyone is healthy is entirely possible.

I think it's just hard for anyone to admit they're getting older, they're not the new, hot thing, etc. Everyone (almost) wants to stay at the top of their game, even if they think suddenly trying their hand at a different game entirely is the way to do it.

Yeah I heard hockey was starting up last night. Or tonight. Whatever. Somehow despite being in what is most likely the best hockey state in the country, I mostly manage to ignore it entirely.

It's not even just hard rock bands. Think about the 60s and 70s artists who tried their hand at synth-heavy music, hairspray and headbands, and embarrassing music videos in the 80s only to realize youth, while wasted on, is best left to the young and returned to something more like their classic sounds in the 90s ... and of course touring solely on their hits again.

They changed it, returned to it, changed it, returned to it. Not unlike a lot of legacy acts who try to evolve, experiment, get lambasted for going too far or selling out, try to make a comeback, get mocked for imitating themselves, and on and on. Thomas Jefferson said something about how maybe a country needed a revolution every generation? Maybe every band should have a lifespan of 10 years and then call it quits. Avoid the whole phenomenon.

(Before examples are pointed out to me of bands that did good work over longer periods of time, I'm just musing. I don't believe that.)

Right, I get where you're coming from.  They might be the most successful rock band to emerge from the 80s.  Had their career ended in 1992, I just consider them first tier.  I think most of their 80s music is great.

I can understand that. I do think it's arguably justifiable to expand from more pure rock n roll to pop in general, but as long as you're leapfrogging other rock n roll subgenres first, it's no longer even arguably justifiable.

As for the backlog, the other way to look at it could be like this: there are too many artists being admitted. Maybe there aren't enough acts to fill the show every year, so they've watered down the HoF (just as I think they do in the NBA, for example, where it's to the point that anyone who was ever an all-star or who was a solid starting player on a good team seems to get in). Maybe some of these still-omitted older bands shouldn't be in, and neither should their modern equivalents. Maybe it really should be the likes of Chuck Berry, Elvis, Buddy Holly, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, Queen, U2 (NOT intended to be exhaustive so no calling me out on omissions). Not the second- or third-tier bands.

Elitists works. Those come in every shape and color, whereas I think hipsterism really does require some kind of "the newest thing" dimension that RS/Wenner haven't had in a looooooonnnnggggg time. I think RS would have been hipster when our first-generation BB fans were around, but not really since. But yeah, the elitism/narrow-mindedness of the HoF has been shameful.

What's worse is, they have arguably justifiably expanded the definition of RnR to include some great legacy artists (Miles Davis) as well as the "rock and roll" of the past generation or so, which is hip-hop-influenced RnB or rap...yet failed to expand their taste into those kinds of actual rock n roll that you mentioned. So hard rock, heavy metal, prog, arena rock are largely left on the outside looking in at non-rock and roll bands or artists. And that's hard to justify. It could be call The Middle Aged Critics' Self-Conscious Attempt at Open-Minded Praise of Pop Music Hall of Fame or something.

I absolutely agree about the HoF providing some great live performance moments.

I have to quibble with your word choice: while Wenner / RS might have been hipster 50 years ago, there's been nothing more boringly dad-rock over the past 20+ years. Whatever is actually hipster these days, odds are the likes of you and I don't even know what it is.

That said, as always, I won't bother voting because the RnR HoF is already long-since fatally flawed, and a kind of dumb idea in the first place. (I do like your votes though. Not a Moody Blues fan, but they would warrant inclusion along with the others.)

I've actually increasingly watched basketball from a distance. Throughout college and post-college, I did enough actual covering of teams that I saw most basketball close-up, with access to players, coaches, etc. As time has gone on, I've become more of a normal fan.

Well, normal is a relative term... But anyway, point being, I like watching basketball from a purely basketball perspective. The "fan experience," as marketing professionals (of which sadly I now am one) would pummel you with, is annoying and irrelevant. Watching basketball is at its best when it's just watching basketball.
