Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Good Timin'

You pretty much diss this song because it has a conventional drum pattern. The backing track isn't unfinished or sparse. There's that really nice harpsichord (or something that resembles a harpsichord) harkening back to the SMiLE stuff.
I wouldn't even say it is a "conventional drum pattern" as it is simply the snare drumming of the 6/8 time that the song is in. There is no imagination or creativity in the whole ordeal. There is some harpsichord tickling around in the background somewhere, but to compare it to Smile seems to be a bit of a stretch. I would love to hear a track-only version of that song, stripped of any vocals, which I absolutely concede were done well. I think it would bring to light what a missed opportunity it was.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Good Timin'

Good Timin' is one of these songs that constantly get stuck in my head despite how little I listen to it. I turned it on the other day and it occurred to me what I dislike about it and it is that it has some of the worst, minimal production of any of their 'hits'. Generic drum line all the way through with almost no instruments, relying solely on the strength of its wonderful melody and harmonies. Such a frustrating listen because you can sense how great it could have been instead of being squarely 'good'.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Ten Underappreciated Beach Boys Albums

The only reason I could accept "Today!" as underappreciated is because, as some have stated here, it's a near-masterpiece, but most of the world doesn't appreciate it that way. Still, with that said, it is one of three albums to make the RS Top 500 (along with PS and Sunflower...pretty sure there's not a 4th), so it does garner some level of acknowledgement, unlike, say, Summer Nights!

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is there anyone who isn't buying SMiLE? and if so, why not?

Okay, I decided to try to buy the 2 disc set from DeepDiscount, but it won't let me check out. Hmm. Maybe I'm just not meant to own this. Or I need to come up with an extra $4 and order from Amazon. I checked the rating for DeepDiscount on a consumer site and it got one star out of five with over 200 ratings. I read bad things about them a few years ago, and apparently they're even worse now. I wonder if anyone will have any luck with them, since they are the cheapest.
Yeah, I won't use DeepDiscount anymore. It used to be a necessary evil with their bi-annual 20% off sales, but they were always very slow and the customer service was really, really bad. From what I've been told they are indeed worse now. I got mine through Deep Discount. They estimated it wouldn't be here until around the 11th, but mine arrived yesterday, the 5th, so I was happy overall. Their tracking left much to be desired, but I'd put that on DHL, not the site.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Perspective: Good Vibrations Box Set
|
on: November 04, 2011, 11:18:28 PM

At the time of the "Good Vibrations: 30 Years of The Beach Boys" box set release, I was much too young to be a fan of the band, so I'm curious as to how the Smile-loving community reacted. I've been around to see the release of BWPS and now TSS, and it's been such an awesome time to be a fan, but I wonder if the reaction was similar upon the release of that set. Of course, the reason I ask is that we had official releases of Smile tracks, such as "Do You Like Worms?" and "Love to Say Da Da."
I understand it was pre-Internet, obviously, but any memories from anybody? Did you have similar expectations and geek outs?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / SMiLE's influence
|
on: October 30, 2011, 01:30:47 PM

The heartbreaking part about not having a completed SMiLE released in 1967 is of course that we will never get to experience the vision in full and the songs as they were truly meant to be, but along with that, we miss out on a chance to see the kind of influence it may have had. Though there have been bootlegs hovering around for decades for the die hard to seek and dig up, alongside various official releases scattered among later Beach Boys albums and box sets, the influence was still compact and contained. Now that we have an official release of these songs for the masses to enjoy as a semi mainstream Beach Boys release, do you think there could still be some musical or cultural impact to be created from this material?
I think about songs like "Do You Like Worms?," which to my ears is unlike anything else I've ever heard, filled with insanity, lushes harmonies, unexpected twists, and spanning through various genres. Why can't a musician hear this, have his/her world altered, and change the course of music forever? Why can't, now that we have a fairly hyped release of a lost and broken album, artists who have always heard rumors of the genius of Brian Wilson, that The Beach Boys were more than just The Beach Boys, discover these lost gems and feel their impact?
My dream is that since the passing of time compresses history, this album can one day be considered, not just a relic of the 60s, but the kind of music that was being created in the 20th and 21st century and one day take on greater prominence instead of just an answer to an obscure trivia question.

I first found this board when BWPS news started to leak and have now stalked it endlessly with all of the new SMiLE posts being published. I am truly geeked for this to arrive from Amazon Canada. I can't wait to annoy all of those around me all over again.

I used to visit this board constantly. I remember stepping back and realizing I think about Brian Wilson literally every single day. Eventually, I got a little burnt out and have had trouble getting excited about the post-BWPS work, but still like the personality of the board, so I pop my head in on occasion.

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Ring Tones

I don't play an instrument or take part in a band, but my musical contribution to the world is the creation of a variety of ring tones for all of my friends. I compose the song and lyrics and just sing it without accompaniment. They're pretty amazing and will become the envy of all who have and will exist.
