51  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Tidbit on the Televised Beach Boys Tribute Concert on: January 12, 2023, 04:41:17 PM
The date of the tribute show for the BBs has finally been announced (see below).

From https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/grammy-salute-the-beach-boys-2023-1235198488/:

"A Grammy Salute to The Beach Boys, the latest in a series of "Grammy Salute" specials, will tape Wednesday, Feb. 8, three days after the 65th annual Grammy Awards are held in Los Angeles. The live concert special will feature a star-studded lineup paying tribute to the classic pop/rock group. It will tape at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and will air on CBS later this year."

Darian S. was working for the Mouse at some point -- perhaps he's the connection.

I love all the examples you cited -- I am so thoroughly in love with that man's voice.

I'm adding "You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone" to the list, especially the live version -- Carl's singing has lots of grit and loads of expression, he's experimenting vocally, and comes closer to pure rock than ever here. I've been a fan of this song for a long time.

Also the chorus of "Goin' On," again especially the live version from Fridays. Holy cow -- Carl nails it with passion there!
54  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian at number 57 in new Rolling Stone greatest singers list on: January 02, 2023, 01:51:59 PM
Lots to dispute with that list, although I won't argue their no. 1 pick -- Aretha is the greatest.

RS could have at the very least mentioned Carl by name in the article on Brian, but no-o-o-o... And they couldn't even get Brian's inspiration the Four Freshmen right, referring to them as the Four Seasons.

No, it's Jonah. I asked both of them, and Jonah told me it was him. Also, Justyn was too young (about 1 year old) at the time to be the speaker.

It's Jonah Wilson, Carl's son.

Not sure, but Billy may be in the mix.

They should have released the version of Make It Good without strings on Disc 1 on CATP.

I could not agree more! I have found "Make It Good" unlistenable for a long time, but dropping the strings out reveals a far more interesting and listenable song. "Cuddle Up" also benefits from having the strings dropped out, but I find them less disruptive than the strings in MIG.

That live version of "Mess of Help" is awesome! Carl rawkin' out like that, just reinforces why I think he's one of the greatest voices of the 20th century.

News and images are starting to leak at the Hoffman forum and are trickling out to other message boards, so the announcement may be as soon as tomorrow. A live version of YNAMOHTSA is also rumored to start streaming tomorrow.

Yup, it's playing promo loops for Sirius channels and was still identified as the BB channel as of noon ET today.
72  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Wilson/Paley Sessions on: August 22, 2022, 04:13:37 PM
What transpired in 1998 happened because Carl wasn't there to object.

I'll be honest tho, I really don't have the energy to pursue this particular topic further...
73  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Wilson/Paley Sessions on: August 22, 2022, 02:10:02 PM
And I think Carl would NOT have gone along with it, based on what I know about the man.

It was basically Mike/Carl/Bruce vs Brian and Al at that point

Based on what I observed backstage then, the alliances ran Mike & Bruce and Carl & Al, but then I'm just an outside observer. I suspect, as the group's mediator, Carl was the man in the middle.
