Aren't tickets for the European venues already on sale?

There's a hold on selling tickets for some of the Western dates. Hope that means they're adding more shows.

Prediction based on past experience: The Atlanta show will probably be part of a series, and the series package tickets go on sale a couple of weeks before single show tickets. It's getting near time (early March) to announce the first set(s) of Chastain Park series.

It's hard to pick just ten, but I'll give it a try:

1. Wild Honey
2. This Whole World
3. Forever
4. Feel Flows
5. Surf's Up (1972 version)
6. I Can Hear Music
7. Darlin'
8. Sail On Sailor
9. Let the Wind Blow (both WH and In Concert versions)
10. Long Promised Road

wanted to go to the athens show but the baby was sick. Sad

The Athens show was recorded for broadcast later in the year (May, iirc) for Mountain Stage on NPR. Here's the link: http://www.mountainstage.org/

Having lost two brothers, both strong creative forces in the band, he knew he couldn't beat down the Al faction.

Huh? By the '80s, Al was much more closely aligned with Carl. They went to dinner together on the road, their wives were friends, they shared a dressing room. Al was the guy pushing for more adventurous material in the setlist.

For those of us living on a fixed income, VIP packages are utterly out of the question.

How about posting the entire list here? (Or is that still in the works?)

2184  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New album info (as it rolls out...) on: February 21, 2012, 11:17:04 AM
I also hope they manage to find and include at least one quality 'new' Carl lead vocal (not Soul Searchin, already released)

But it's not the same "Soul Searchin'" as the BB's one, since Carl's middle-eight was replaced by Brian's lead and there are no BB backing vox. I'd dearly love to see the version with Carl singing the whole song over the BB's backing vocals given a proper release.

2185  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl on: February 20, 2012, 10:52:54 AM
I think we'll never come to realize the full extent of the pain that caused him the WIBN book.

You got that one right! Carl loved his brothers a lot. He was still grieving Denny's loss, dealing with an ageing mother, and then he had the whole Landy mess to deal with. That was a very painful experience for him.

Also, let's not forget that part of Carl's job was keeping the band running smoothly as a performing unit on the road, rehearsing the supporting guys regularly, and trying to mediate the various interests within the group. (FYI, for those who are unaware, the Mike/Al alliance was long gone by the '80s.) He had a LOT to deal with on his plate.

Carl loved performing -- and he was really something special onstage, lots of charisma along with those beautiful, expressive blue eyes and that glorious voice. He was something of a character too, with a wicked sharp (in a good way) sense of humor. If you got a chance to see him onstage in his prime, you were lucky -- I know I was.

P.S. to Disney Boy (1985): Yup, "Where I Belong" is a good one.

I had to be elsewhere on Saturday, seeing VDP in Athens on Sunday.

I agree with the general sentiment about gouging fans. VIP Nation ought to donate all the proceeds from those VIP packages to the Carl Wilson Foundation, but I would be surprised if they actually did.

I love "No Wrong Notes in Heaven"! It would be a great one for the BBs to record.

How do you like this ?

I LOVE IT!! It's so good to see them all together.

2193  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Complete BB Grammy video here. on: February 13, 2012, 06:29:22 PM
How about John Cowsill??? Does a fantastic Darlin and I Can Hear Music or Darian maybe, also does a fantastic Darlin.'

Umm, no thanks -- Cowsill is energetic on these songs, but he sings them in a manner that is nothing at all like Carl Wilson performed them. (This is not a knock on John -- he does quite well, but his approach is just too different stylistically, imho.)

Darian does a very nice version of "Darlin'," much closer in feel to Carl's. I've also seen Matt Jardine do serious justice to both "Darlin'" and "I Can Hear Music," but there's not been any indication he'll be on the tour.

2194  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Complete BB Grammy video here. on: February 13, 2012, 01:58:44 PM
Brian will sing Carl's. Jeff will sing Brian's.

Or Jeff will sing Carl's part, if it's a lead.

Also was Ricky Fataar playing with Bonnie Rait? I haven't seen the whole show.

It was just Bonnie Raitt (guitar) and Alicia Keys (keyboard) playing a tribute to Etta James. No backing group to be seen.

The hubby and I both loved the guitar jam at the end.

2198  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Live Grammy Discussion Thread on: February 12, 2012, 07:29:44 PM
Re: McCartney's Valentine -- I liked Joe Walsh's guitar solo. The rest was so-so. imho. Then again, I'm not a fan of that style of music.

As for the BBs, there wasn't enough of them, imho. It was good to see them all together and to see Dave as part of the band again.

I note that the first verse of GV was skipped entirely. Foskett sang the lead with Brian (which makes sense, he's filled Carl's shoes quite a bit in Brian's band). But Jeff's in the back line, not the front line, so they showed Brian on the front line, although he was the second voice in the balance, not the primary.

I want a shirt with the 50th Celebration logo!

(I'm wearing one of the late Greg Larson's shirts in honor of tonight's reunion, and how much Greg would have enjoyed it.)
