1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Whatever happened to Bill House? on: March 12, 2021, 01:52:41 PM
According to the BMI database, he is also known as Billy Harve House. From some googling, there appears to be a 69-year-old of the same name in California.

Billy Harv House is how he is credited on the back of the Dancing With A Smile album - which is superb, by the way, and well worth a listen. It has the admittedly-weird original version of You Can Make It Big on it, too.

Glad he's still alive, at least! If he's 69 now that has him born in 1952, which makes him a decade younger than Bruce. That adds up in terms of timeline.

Bill House must be one of the most annoyingly difficult names to research and do Google searches on.  LOL

I love me some Make it Big.

Absolutely. Even while searching in quotes I keep getting results for Congressional bills. I thought I'd struck gold when I saw on LinkedIn a guy named Bill House who is publisher of a music production magazine... but it is a totally different guy.

He seemed to be part of the Terry Melcher group of guys, worked with Bruce as well of course. But it's as if in the late 80s he just dropped out of the game completely. Certainly Discogs has him actively producing, many songs each year, then bam, it stops in 1986. In fact his last non-re-release production credit is Rock N Roll To The Rescue by the Beach Boys!

Wasn't sure if this should go in the other music forum or not, but given that he wrote the original version of Make It Big and was credited on various KTSA tracks, I figure he has enough of a connection for the main BB forum.

What happened to him? Where is he? I have both of his solo albums and love them, but as far as I can tell he went into production but has now dropped off the face of the earth entirely. I saw a guy on Facebook saying he used to party with him in Hawaii but that was over 30 years ago. Is he completely out of the BB orbit?

This was some weeks ago but I heard The Creeping Goldfish's cover of Big Sur while grocery shopping on a Saturday morning. A deep cut to say the least.
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What would have been a fair price for Sea of Tunes? on: September 04, 2018, 08:31:12 AM
Shareholders of Apple stocks in 2007 might have made a fortune by selling but missed out on a bigger. That doesn't mean they were scammed.

One of the details in the history of The Beach Boys is when Murry sold the publishing rights (Sea of tunes) to Irving Almo Music.
The story we've all learned through the years is that it was sold for a fraction of its worth. (I also know they might not wanted to sell at all but Murry did it anyway)

You need to actually read the substance of Wilson's lawsuit - which was partially successful - before commenting further. Wilson's contention wasn't "well they made a bunch of money with it and I want some". It was that the sale itself was fraudulent due to misrepresentation from legal figures involved with the buyers, and such malfeasance as forged signatures:

http://articles.latimes.com/1989-09-19/entertainment/ca-4315_1_brian-wilson

This case was settled three years later for a pretty huge sum of money, suggesting that Brian's allegations had some truth to them and it wasn't just sour grapes over the value of the catalog.

It's an underrated song for sure, jaunty yet vulnerable at the same time (and you can say that about a lot of the catalog.)

The Honeys version is also worth a listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuWp4UMJzCk

20 Golden Greats on vinyl, like many (most?) in the UK in the 70s through 80s.
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Channel on Sirius XM on: August 22, 2018, 05:47:41 AM
If anyone else subscribed to Sirius specifically for this, and did so with the six-month streaming special offer, if you call up and cancel now you will get a pro-rated refund. So I just got around $20 back of the original $35.

Heard it on Sirius today and thought I'd somehow forgotten about it from Unleash The Love.

It's no improvement on the original and it's very, very heavily produced. If you like It's OK, you won't hate it. But when the original is out there, why bother?
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Everyone back together for a Beach Boys Q&A for Sirius XM? on: August 17, 2018, 01:28:10 PM
I'm on board for probably most if not all of Reiner's politics. Sean Hannity shouldn't be anywhere near a BB event, and never would thankfully.

But Reiner hosting this event is actually quite a bit like Ron Howard's work on the Beatles "Eight Days a Week" film: Bland, inoffensive, and someone who can get the job done without any hiccups.

Leaving his politics 100% to one side I don't think this is entirely fair. Howard's knowledge of, and relationship with, The Beatles is nothing like Reiner's with the BBs. While Reiner dominated the intro he then settled very, very well into the interview and used his knowledge to augment the band's answers. It was pretty impressively done and I'd love to hear him interview them again.
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Everyone back together for a Beach Boys Q&A for Sirius XM? on: August 11, 2018, 08:43:54 AM
Lots of pessimism here but I thought Brian sounded engaged and interested, which is different from many interviews, and he was actively seeking answers from Mike and Al (who is the GOAT at these interviews. Informative without rambling, biting without being mean.) Those seeking new music will be disappointed but I thought it was a fun listen. Even Rob Reiner, after a very bloviating start, settled down well into the Q&A format, and there is no denying that he knows his BB lore.

And now we "know" it was a brush stick on Surfin and not Brian's finger! this is the kind of all-important, world-changing knowledge the satellite radio format was invented for!

David Fricke, who I guess is some kind of music historian or DJ or something, had a couple of shows over the weekend. Quite enjoyable, with some good anecdotes that casual fans might not know. But when he introduced California Saga, he said it was probably the longest Beach Boys release "after the disco remix of Keepin' the Summer Alive."  Huh Pretty basic mistake to make but other than that it was an enjoyable listen.
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Hearing Beach Boys songs with fresh ears - still possible after all these years! on: July 02, 2018, 04:48:13 PM

I do find it frustrating that there is no really good BBs deep cuts compilation available. I wish they’d accompanied Made In California with a vinyl release.

Please excuse the self-quote. Having trawled Discogs I was frustrated that I couldn’t find a good BB deep cuts compilation on vinyl. But after posting I thought i’d Have one more try and I found exactly what I was looking for - The Beach Boys Capitol Years looks like it has some brilliantly sequenced LPs - especially the disc dedicated to the Friends / 20/20 era. As I understand it the SQ is not ideal but looks like a great set.

We were talking about this on Discord earlier and it's amazing how many BB compilation releases there are. The overseas ones tend to have more interesting (read: more random) track listings. But they generally mix the great hits in with weird cuts, or ones that did well locally (South Africans enjoyed Cherry Cherry Coupe for some reason.) Then there are various compilations with tracks labeled by the Beach Boys that were never recorded by them at all.

Please someone tell me that I'm not going nuts - at 10:09am Central on Sunday, they played Dance Dance Dance twice in a row. Right?
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Channel on Sirius XM on: May 28, 2018, 07:02:48 PM
It kind of irritates me when they're in the double song block - "Let's play two songs from *year*..." - and they play two songs, normally sequenced back-to-back on the album, out of order.

Example: Holland... "Only With You" with "Leaving This Town" afterwards.

Other than that, I love this channel. It sucks that my new car doesn't have a satellite radio in it.

Ha! I was driving home just then and heard the same pair and had the exact same reaction. Quick double-take moment.

Maybe I'm getting Sirius Stockholm Syndrome but I actually thought the sequence worked  Grin

They've played a couple of the posthumous Carl tracks, including my personal favorite, Run Don't Walk.

The depth and breadth of the choices has been a real surprise to me so far. I wonder how casual fans think when they dial into the channel expecting Fun Fun Fun and they're met with a gospel song to the Maharishi instead?
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sounds of Summer back on the billboard 200 on: May 28, 2018, 02:19:56 PM
Just how many copies a week you have to sell (physical copies) in the US Yo make it all the way to 193? In Finland that would be maybe 5-10 copies...

Billboard isn't based purely off sales anymore, let alone physical sales. It's also based off streaming services and subscription audio. Not sure if Youtube factors in.
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Channel on Sirius XM on: May 28, 2018, 02:16:13 PM
Impressed that out of all the songs to get Mike to talk about the origin of, they went for "Finders Keepers".

I get the feeling they sat him down and just read the track listings for each album, one after the other, because earlier today we got the fascinating genesis of Don't Hurt My Little Sister (in this track, Mike ruminates on sisters, and the non-hurting thereof, because he didn't want guys to hurt his little sister. Sorry if that's a spoiler.)
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Anyone Looking For A Cheap Beach Boys Tee? on: May 27, 2018, 07:45:53 PM
I've ordered it because I love KTSA (I think Goin' On is easily in the top 25 Beach Boys songs of all time) and this has a nice ZX Spectrum aesthetic. Thank you for the link!
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sounds of Summer back on the billboard 200 on: May 27, 2018, 06:55:54 PM
We just need Brian to tweet about Candace Owens and they'll jump above Kanye again!

In seriousness - got to wonder how much this is connected to either the Sirius launch or the orchestral album buzz (probably the former more than the latter, since the latter isn't out yet.) Or maybe it's just summer and some boomers got the urge to listen to some surf tracks. Or it's summer and some gas stations and bigbox stores put their summer CDs front and center.

Man, you're right, no news at all and I'm sitting here genuinely contemplating the 193 spot on the Billboard charts...

Wondering if they'll play (or have already played) the really deep cuts such as stuff off their Celebration albums or such "gems" as Mike Love's "(Bop Bop) On The Beach"...

I hope so because I can't even find Celebration songs on Youtube and I'd like to hear them for the curiosity value.

But if we're talking DEEP, deep... how about Mike's "Be True To Your Bud" Anheuser-Busch commercial jingle? If THAT got played on the radio, I think we'd reach peak obscurity.

Caught the BB sirius channel for the 1st time last night. Pleasantly surprised by the more rare stuff they played.

But yeah, didn't hear any  Smile material.  For me, anything from Pet Sounds to Holland is the most creative for the band and my preference. I can appreciate Love You and some of the Surf/Car songs but not my favorites.

Hope to hear more soon. ( My wife has satellite radio in her vehicle only so I'm limited  Undecided )

You can also stream it online if she has an account. If not... you can access the channel for a free trial by Googling it. Right now, it's WIGU(TBAM).

I don't have an account, and I can listen to it here:

https://player.siriusxm.com/now-playing

And then select the Beach Boys Channel.

Great find, even better, since the online trial only lasts a few days!

I've actually tried to sign up for a paid account - it accepted my billing info but won't let me log in. This will allow me to listen until their customer support reopens tomorrow morning.

A listener from Latrobe, PA requested The Warmth of The Sun... perfect for this summer's night.

And apologies for the flood of posts and edits but as I'm only just now getting to listen I'm just now getting to contribute... the speeding-up is REALLY noticable on some tracks. The last track was the album mix of Break Away and it's got to be at least 15% faster than normal. For me this really works; they should have recorded it like this! Really makes it more upbeat in every sense. For other tracks I can imagine it sounds really awkward, but for me this sounds amazing. For the casual listener I guess this makes it a lot more approachable; for veteran listeners it's jarring, but sometimes (like this time) it can be a pleasant surprise. Do You Wanna Dance, the next track, is positively sedate by comparison!

My opinion on the Good Vibrations mix: if you don't like negativity, you can skip it.

----

A VERY slight improvement on the FFF production, but I mean to damn it with faint praise. It's still worse than the original, so why bother?

As with FFF I find myself subconsciously trying to mute the orchestra, but for a different reason this time. The overwrought intro robs the song of its abrupt vocal tag opening - a Brian trademark - and the cello hits on the chorus mean the orchestral director probably watched Love & Mercy the day before recording.

The best I can say for it is that the orchestra only intrudes in places, rather than the whole thing, and the ascending notes leading up to the chorus are actually quite stirring.

The mis-timed cymbal at 2:20 sums up this whole project for me. If it existed in the original album mix, it's successfully buried. Here it's front and center.
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What if...? on: May 27, 2018, 05:05:58 PM
It’s possible they might have just come and gone at Monterey Pop, especially if they played the way they did in Hawaii.  And compared to the acts who made a splash at Monterey like Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Hendrix, The Who, The Beach Boys might have stuck out like old hats.

Yep. The common wisdom is that they (or mainly Brian) were terrified they were going to be jeered off as squares. In reality I think it would have been even worse: they'd have been ignored. People would have retreated to their tents until the awkward organ warbling stopped.

I know some people like the stripped-down sound from Hawaii but I think it's awful, personally. It's neither one thing nor the other: none of the innocent energy of the early songs and early shows, and none of the rich production of the later masterpieces. The Monterey crowd wouldn't have gone for it.
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Were Al's Commercial Instincts Under Utilized? on: May 27, 2018, 05:01:42 PM
There's only so much 'oxygen' in the room, as they say, so Al was likely never going to steer the bus, creatively in The Beach Boys.

But a quick look back, and a case could be made, that Al has some magic when it came to being involved in the hit making side of things. Help Me Rhonda, an Al lead, was a number 1 hit of course. Al championed the recording of Sloop John B. Internationally, Cottonfields was a big hit. Lady Lynda-top 10 in UK. Even Come Go With Me, had a decent chart run.

Did the band have a hit maker that was overshadowed?

In the Storytelling concerts he relates a hilarious but bittersweet tale about Help Me Rhonda:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umh6eRkt1yg

If you can't watch it, he explains how the album mix was "crazy" in large part because of the volume fluctuations. Terry Melcher calls the band as a courtesy and says he wants to record it (in those days he could have just gone ahead and done it; he was polite to ask), but it was Brian, not Al, who said that the BBs needed to try it one more time. That brought the brilliant single with Al's clear voice in the forefront.

The point I'm making is that, although Al and the guys knew at the time - from the disastrous Murry sessions - that the song was nowhere near what it should have been, it was Brian who steered it off the rocks and made it the number one hit. Not Al. Would Al have done so if he was in charge? Maybe, but for reasons of family dynamics and personalities it wouldn't ever have happened that way.

So I'm half agreeing with you and half not; in a band like the Beach Boys, with a domineering father and BW running the show creatively, it would have taken an absolute giant to stand out, and that wasn't Al. Instead Al was a folk-influenced, hard-working band member. Probably with the best and clearest natural voice in the band, too, but one that would almost always be in the background.
