1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / God Only Knows Pentatonix Cover on: October 26, 2019, 09:52:02 PM
Just came across this and found it to be an interesting cover of my absolute, all time favorite song of the Beach Boys.  I enjoy listening to Pentatonix occasionally, but for some reason this cover seemed overly produced and lacked a sense of expressiveness.  It was however, a nice attempt at a beautiful song.  I've listened to many covers of God Only Knows, and still, no one can sing it like Carl.

Al is fantastic on this lead.  This has always been a great song to hear performed live throughout the years as well.

My Fisher XP-18's circa 1968.  The BB sound amazing on just about any audio setup though.  It's all about the music and not about the equipment.
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who was the second best songwriter in the Beach Boys? on: July 12, 2018, 08:00:19 PM
Al is 2nd best. I like his songs - "Susie Cincinnati", "Lookin' At Tomorrow", you name it. Cool songs. 3D

I totally agree.  Al would always be my pick.  "California Saga", "Lady Lynda", and "Santa Ana Winds" are some of Al's contributions worthy of consideration.  Friends, Sunflower, Holland, and MIU all have significant contributions from Al.

I have heard a few of these tracks played on the SiriusXM Beach Boys channel lately and I was intrigued, as I wasn't aware of this project being in the works.  I am a fan of orchestral music and a big fan of the Beach Boys so this album is a win for me.  The songs are the old familiar favorites, but the orchestral arrangements provide a much fuller, richer, and warmer sound.  "The Warmth of the Sun" was done beautifully.  As Al commented "...the fans are just gonna take this one to heart, they're gonna love it.  They're going to feel the way I do I'm sure, I hope they do."   I do love the album and musical arrangements and I appreciate and enjoy hearing the Beach Boys in a new and musically diverse manner.

Great station and great selections being played!   I'm enjoying hearing the mix of music that is being chosen.  Hopefully casual listeners of the Beach Boys will come to appreciate many of the non-mainstream songs that are being played.  Glad SiriusXM finally decided to give us BB fans our own channel, even if it is only for the summer!

Just heard this news this morning on my way to work.  Can't wait to hear this over the summer!!  Should be great!!!
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Beach Boys Surf Line on SiriusXM on: May 17, 2018, 08:13:55 PM
I've been listening to SiriusXM "60's on 6" this week and heard Phlash Phelps discussing the Beach Boys Surf Line where listeners can call in and share their favorite Beach Boys stories and memories.  I didn't catch the number 1-800-......ends with FUN FUN FUN.  I'm not sure how long this will run but it might be interesting to listen to what people have to say.  "60's on 6" plays a fair amount of the standard Beach Boys songs from the 60's, I know I heard "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "I Get Around" in the last few days.  I wonder if requests can be made on this line.  Perhaps a few of the non-traditional songs like anything off the "Today" or "Summer Days and Summer Nights" albums.  There is so much great music from the Beach Boys in the 60's era and it would be great to hear some of it showcased.  For that matter I'd like to hear a variety of Beach Boys music from all eras, not just the 60's.  The Beatles have their own SiriusXM channel, why not the Beach Boys?

Very nice!  I really like the sound of the music of Alan Boyd.  Definitely has a Beach Boys feel.  Thanks for sharing.
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Alternate Reality: Al, Mike, and Brian as The Beach Boys on: April 21, 2018, 08:21:18 PM
Glad to see that there are others who also enjoy MIU.  It has always been one of my favorite albums from the 70's.  Some of my favorites are Kona Coast, Come Go With Me, Sweet Sunday Kind of Love (nice vocal by Carl), Pitter Patter, Peggy Sue and Winds of Change.  Being a big fan of Al Jardine I really enjoy the number of lead vocals that he contributes to the album, in addition to his writing and producing talents.  If history would have changed for the band, this album could have been the transition for Al into a solo career some years earlier.

"Heaven" by Carl.  I came across this video on YouTube the other day and it literally brought tears to my eyes.  This song has been going through my head for a few days now.  His voice and presence were absolutely legendary.  He is truly missed.

Love this group.  "Never My Love"  and "Everything That Touches You" are both great songs.  "Never My Love" has always been a favorite of mine.  They have some nice harmonies.

I've never seen that performance before.  Carl sounds AMAZING!!  Thanks for sharing!
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What would Dennis look like if he were alive today? on: March 14, 2018, 07:36:09 PM
Interesting to think about.  I think Dennis would look a bit older and a bit heavier.  The Hawaiian shirt in the photo was a nice touch.  Funny how Mama Cass looks very similar in both photos, she ages well.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Have you ever heard a Beach Boys song in a different language? on: March 14, 2018, 07:25:20 PM
In My Room (German Version) by The Beach Boys themselves. Really beautiful.
This is the first song that came to mind.  Just listened to it a few days ago actually.  Very nice.

Footage from the 1967 Unicef Variety Gala in Paris.  The boys sing "O Come All Ye Faithful" at the end and they totally nail it.  The harmonies are just beautiful!
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / Polls / Re: Discuss Every Beach Boys Song Day By Day on: February 26, 2018, 09:44:09 AM
I absolutely love the harmonies on this song!  To be honest, I don't really even listen to the lead vocal when I listen to this song.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson lookalike = actor Edmund Cobb (super eerie) on: February 24, 2018, 07:59:16 PM
I have always thought Alec Baldwin resembled Brian, particularly young Alec as young Brian.

Completely agree!  I have always thought Alec Baldwin should be cast as Brian.

22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Best sounding Beach Boys copycat/covers band, and they are British on: February 22, 2018, 07:07:31 PM
If we are talking about current cover bands I would say The Fendertones and The Bootleg Beach Boys.  Both bands do some really remarkable and amazing renditions of BB music.  The Fendertones reproduce all the vocals and instrumentals with precision and take care to give the music a very authentic feel.  The lead singer of The Bootleg Beach Boys sings a pretty mean falsetto and the harmonies also sound very close to original.  I've never really researched where they are from but both are a lot of fun to listen to.
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: WIBN in final (?) Nancy comic strip on: February 20, 2018, 09:40:07 AM
"Wouldn't It Be Nice" if we could all just get along.  I was shocked to see the final Nancy comic strip over the weekend, but pleasantly surprised to see that familiar record label and the lyrics to such a wonderful piece of music.  References to music, songs, and artists have always been a part of this comic strip.  If indeed this is the final strip, it couldn't have ended in a better way.
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al Jardine - The Unsung Hero of BASS GUITAR on: February 19, 2018, 06:26:32 PM
Yet another testament to the talent that each member contributed to the group.

Such wonderful footage of the important landmarks in the history of the BB.  These ladies show such excitement throughout the tour and have a genuine love of everything BB.  Loved the soundtrack!  Thanks for sharing!
