You have my unending respect. Jaco Pastorius is GOD on the fretless.

No argument here.

The highlight of the day was Jaco Pastorius.  I just discovered that album yesterday digging through some old vinyl.  I put it on and it blew me away.  I'd argue that it's a contender for the best jazz album of the 1970s.

79  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Catalog Numbers for Single Capitol CDs on: January 29, 2006, 12:42:45 PM
The post-twofer version of Summer Days was still called Summer Days. The version titled California Girls was issued in 1987.

My bad.  Thanks for correcting me.  So does anyone have the catalog numbers?
80  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Catalog Numbers for Single Capitol CDs on: January 29, 2006, 09:17:35 AM
Hey everyone,

Does anyone have all the catalogue numbers for the 1960s albums after the 1990 Two-Fers were deleted and all the 1960s albums were re-released on individual CDs?  Also, did anyone notice that the single issue of Summer Days (and Summer Nights) was re-titled as "California Girls"?  So dumb.  Anyway, if someone could give me the catalog numbers for all of these CDs, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Hey, analogdemon
how is Domination ?..Axelrod did the arranging and producing on that one.

I've always enjoyed this one.  It's orchestral, but done in a bop style.  Pretty good stuff.  This album doesn't get glowing reviews, but I think it's a pretty solid work.

Yes we all know your opinions on R.E.M.  Grin

That's alright though.  We all like what we like.

85  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Still Cruisin'/Summer in Paradise Two-fer? on: January 25, 2006, 09:06:33 AM
Hey everyone,

Here's a question...

Say for the sake of merdas and grins that Still Cruisin' and Summer in Paradise were re-released as a two-fer.  While this might be some fans' worst nightmare, here's my question.

a) Would you buy it?
b) What would you like to see in it in terms of artwork/liner notes, etc.  Who would be the right person to write liner notes for Still Cruisin'?  Summer in Paradise?

Let's have a discussion.
-----

Truthfully, I think if they re-released it as a two-fer, it goes without saying that I'd like to see reproductions of all the SIP artwork and possibly the "Still Cruisin' indeed" blurb that's inside the CD booklet for Still Cruisin'.  To me, it really wouldn't matter who wrote the liner notes, though I bet Terry Melcher could have written some interesting notes, but since he's dead, I guess it's a moot point.

87  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / SMiLE DVD Has Gone Platinum on: January 24, 2006, 06:59:17 AM
I can't seem to find a thread about this, but apparently the "Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE" DVD went platinum while the actual studio album appears to still be waiting for gold.  You can go to the RIAA Gold/Platinum database for proof.  Way to go, Brian!

I can't believe nobody's mentioned Jefferson Airplane's "Surrealistic Pillow" or the first (and only?) Great Society album.

90  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / 1975 Hits Compilation on: January 23, 2006, 06:24:52 PM
Hey Everyone,

In 1975, Reprise put out a hits compilation of post 1966 stuff called "Good Vibrations - Best of the Beach Boys".  I have some questions for someone who has a copy:

1. Does "Do it Again" have the workshop coda at the end?
2. Does "Caroline, No" have the train and dog barking at the end?
3. Is "Wouldn't It Be Nice" the correct version as opposed to the more prominent lead vocal version that was on some of the 80s Capitol compilations?
4. Is "Heroes and Villains" the "45 version" or the regular version (not sure how to tell the difference).

Any answers would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Money and Freak, not remotely underrated. Everyone knows those are great and they frequently show up in Best Of lists, including Rolling Stone's. Free, I'd say so.

Just because the critics know it doesn't mean the general public does.  Hell, Frank Zappa in and of himself will never get his due from the public.  It's incredible to me how many people know his name and have never heard his music.

How about any of the first three Mothers of Invention albums ("Freak Out", "Absolutely Free" and "We're Only in It for the Money")

1986 - Frank Zappa becomes the only artist in history to ever have a parental advisory given to an instrumental album.

The distributor, Meyer Music Markets, placed a parental advisory sticker on Zappa's 1986 release, "Jazz From Hell" even though the album is entirely instrumental.  The decision was made because of one song title, "G-Spot Tornado".  Wal Mart and other retailers refuse to sell the album because of the advisory.

The song is alright I think, but it really messes with the flow of the 85 album.  If that song had been written and produced by Brian Wilson in 1964, it probably would have been a top 10 hit.  But it just sounds absurdly out of place for 1985.  Maybe if they had used real instruments, it might have sounded better.

I'll tell you another one of those Caribou CDs that are incredibly hard to find is Ten Years of Harmony.  I've only seen one copy.  That one, like the Caribou MIU CD, has the wrong mix of Come Go With Me.

Same here.  I listen to it a lot.  Some of my favorite Talking Heads stuff is on there.

Puzzlin' Evidence is pure genius.

Alright, a True Stories fan.

True Stories rules.  It's just a fun record.  I never get sick of it.
