You should know that this book is 95% about the band members relationships and 5% about the recorded music. You could learn more abut the CBS era in this thread than in the Gaine's book. Thank you for saving me money. I read some of the reviews on Amazon.com and it looks like it's basically a trash biography.

God forbid you buy a ten dollar book about the Beach Boys. Indeed. That's $10 that I could put toward something else, like music. I learn things about the band as I want to know it, and usually I can find out whatever I want to know on the Internet. If not, then I'd be willing to buy a book if I wanted to know the information that badly. That period is written about in Gaines' book. In what kind of detail? Is a fair amount of the book devoted to that period (obviously they only put out 3 albums for CBS, so they'd spend a majority of the book on the Capitol and Reprise years)? If it goes into the CBS years in a fair amount of detail, then I may buy the book anyway just as a resource.

Nevermind. I found it myself and saved myself the money for a book I'd have otherwise bought just to find out that information.
It sounds like Yetnikoff was pissed off that the Boys signed the contract in 1977 and they didn't have any demos until 1978. Then when he goes in to hear the demos, he doesn't like what he hears. The Beach Boys were already a huge gamble for CBS so for Yetnikoff to hear demos of stuff that was way late and then not like what he hears, I think I'd feel like I'd been fodaed too. That means he had to tell the Boys to start over from scratch, which means more time before CBS had a Beach Boys album to sell. That's probably the point where they realized that Brian wasn't going to cut it as producer and called Bruce back instead. Luckily, they did better work than those demos and delivered what I consider to be a great album.
The CBS years are always something that's interested me because it's probably the least written-about period of their career.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Ripping Two-Fers into a Computer

Just out of curiosity, for those of us who rip our two-fers into the computer, do you split the two-fers up by individual album and organize them that way, or do you just rip the entire CD and organize it as a two-fer? I tend to split it up, so if you look at my Musicmatch library, you'll see each individual Beach Boys album with its own cover art.

How was LDC/ASL last? Beacuse that's the last one I bought. The first Beach Boys CD I bought was Smiley Smile/Wild Honey. From there, I just started buying them in random order. I'd be in a music store, see what they had and say "OK what do I feel like hearing once I get out of the store?" And I'd buy whatever I felt like. I basically bought SS/SUSA and LDC/ASL for the sole express purpose of completing my collection since I took advantage of a buy one get 3 free from BMG. So I just bit the bullet and bought the last two just so I could say I had all the albums. If I had to pay full price for those 2 two-fers, I'd probably never have gotten them because I just I really have had no interest in hearing any of those four albums up to this point. But I've got them now so it's all good. And yes, I do have Ten Years of Harmony (what a pain in the ass to find, only got it a week ago) and Lost and Found. In essence, I have all the studio albums now, and much more. The collection is complete as far as I'm concerned. I didn't have all the studio albums until today so that's finally been rectified. haha As far as vinyl, I'm working on it. I've got original pressings of Smiley Smile (Duophonic), Wild Honey (Mono and Duophonic), Surf's Up, Holland, Love You, LA and KTSA.

Good man. Learn from him, Zappa fans. The vinyl of CWRATJ is the ONLY way to go.
The vinyl version is far more raw, however I do think that the 1984 remix does have its merits. For those who don't know, Zappa used new musicians (uncredited) to re-record the drums and bass on Cruising with Ruben & the Jets and We're Only in It for the Money in 1984 (while getting his whole back catalog ready for release on CD for the first time) because he decided he didn't like the way the original bass and drum parts sounded. He released the remixed versions of both albums in 1987 and took the original masters out of production. Before his death, he relented on WOIIFTM and put the original 1968 Verve master back into production and deleted the remix. He didn't do the same for CWRATJ however, so the only way to hear the original album is to get an original vinyl copy, or at least a vinyl copy that pre-dates 1984. WOIIFTM only contained re-recorded bass and drums, but CWRATJ, in addition to re-recorded bass and drums, also has some vocal overdubs, some longer endings, etc. It almost sounds like a completely different album. I do prefer the sound quality of the remixed CWRATJ to the original. The original vinyl mix sounds very muddy and raw. Also, there are parts where Chad Wickerman's drums on the remix are pretty cool. Everyone should hear both versions and decide for themselves. I do find myself listening to the original vinyl more than the remix lately, probably because I'd never heard the vinyl up until a month ago. No matter which version you listen to, the album is great though. It's basically a Zappa doo-wop album. Great stuff. There are a lot of people who have wondered why Dweezil hasn't restored the original master himself. I think the problem is that FZ never did any kind of remastering or anything else with the original CWRATJ and instead only worked with the remix. So that would mean that Dweezil would have to do a remaster and build the album from the original multi-track masters, which would lead to endless arguments about how FZ would have done it had he lived, and quite frankly, I don't think anyone wants to go there. There will never be another FZ, so we need to just take the music he gave us and run with it.

The Mellotron and Hammond organ intro on one of the greatest openings to a song: "Watcher Of The Skies" Genesis 1972 off of Foxtrot!! Nothing could set the "tone" for the beginning of a Genesis concert quite like that! Brian
Amen. Tony Banks did a great job on that.

New Records: Newbury Comics Used Records: Various used record shops CDs & DVD-Audio: Newbury Comics, CDUniverse.com, Tower Records Digital Music Files: Musicmatch
In all honesty, this is how I buy music:
There's something I want. OK, is it available in surround sound on DVD-Audio? If not, is it available on vinyl? If not, then I'll usually just buy the tracks off Musicmatch unless it's a band that I really truly love, in which case I'll buy the CD for the artwork and the liner notes, etc.
