1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / How did people get the Smile tapes back in the day for bootlegs? on: March 05, 2018, 03:52:27 PM
I have a few older bootleg Smile albums from the mid - late 80s and some from the early 90s. I'm curious, How did people get this wealth of Smile material that was at a point unheard for decades? I've read the story about the guy exchanging a Phil Spector christmas record (for brian) to Brian's associates for a few Smile songs, but how did people get all the other material?

Beach Boys. Sgt. Pepper is a fine album, and Penny/Strawberry are fantastic, But Smiley Smile/Wild Honey hold up so much more in these times. I find them more compelling and interesting. If Smile had been released, it would be no contest whatsoever. I think Pepper, to me at least, suffers from a song-writing perspective for most album tracks, and is often made up by the heavy production. There aren't a lot of super strong songs besides a few if you pull back the bells and whistles. Smiley Smile and Honey are very home-grown like albums, mostly recorded in Brian's house, with very minimal production but insanely powerful and great songs underneath it all. Not saying big grand production is bad by any means, have you heard Pet Sounds or Smile? What matters at the end of the day is the songs behind all the production, or at the very least you need a good balance between song and production. Smiley Smile / Wild Honey very much have the right mixture. The Beach Boys could do a lot with a little, where I feel like the Beatles in 1967 had to compensate and catch up in that sense. (The White Album made up for these mistakes, improving immensely on songwriting.)

The Beatles never made albums on the same level as Pet Sounds, the SMiLE Sessions, or even Smiley Smile. I'm not bias toward the Beach Boys! Revolver, Rubber Soul, and The White Album are absolutely wonderful, So is their pre Rubber Soul material. If I'm being honest....I Prefer The Beatles boy-band stuff than the Beach Boys surf songs..... Shrug

The Beach Boys from 1966-1967 imo had superior production, and their music also has a "spiritual" quality that i haven't experienced with The Beatles music personally.
The Beatles were stronger from a LYRICAL standpoint. Also as a unit they had stronger musician ship.
At the end of it all though, The Beach Boys had Brian Wilson  which I think kind of ends the conversation.

Probably all of "Prayer", but the hummed chorus in "Little Pad" has been kicking my ass for like almost a year probably.
