Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Bruce Johnston's 1968 Solo Project - Polydor - \

Just from a flick through the Uncut Ultimate Music Guide interviews, maybe I've missed some.
Melody Maker, December 23, 1967: "We have our own record company, Brother Records, and we're setting up foreign deals and finding artist. Apart from that, I'm going to make a solo record for Polydor which will be cut in the States".
NME, March 23, 1968: "Included in The Beach Boys' recording plans are Bruce's own solo album, which features him singing the Lennon & McCartney composition "With A Little Help From My Friends". He played me his interpretation of this on the piano over the phone - believe it or not he has made a very listenable waltz out it!
NME, March 22, 1969: "I'm [Bruce] writing music for a beautiful film about surfing... It hasn't got a title yet, but the people who are making it have a movie called Free And Easy which they're showing at selected cinemas."
NME, June 7, 1969: ""Two and a half years ago, when we lost out bass player, we were thinking of asking Bruce to join us again", Mark [Lindsay, from Paul Revere and the Raiders] revealed. "Yeah, I was browned off with The Beach Boys, it was that bad period", Bruce agreed, no douibt thinking how fortunate he had been in making the decision to stay with the what must be the world's top working group".
NME, June 10 and 17, 1972: Mike: "Bruce is definitely on a solo trip, he is a good solo performer, he writes fantastic songs by himself, and the time he spent writing alone isolated him from the group. He had his own interests, his own relationships with the press, and he played a game that was oblique to The Beach Boys. But now he is free to do as he pleases. The Beach Boys never threw Bruce out, he was just on a tangent that was outside The Beach Boys for so many years. His wholeidea of the future is to be a songwriter and have a TV show, and it's all based on individual music taste and individual aspirations, which are fine, but not within the framework of a group. That was what was good about Bruce leaving the group"
the interviewer really loved Bruce (no doubt as he gave lots of great interviews to NME over the years), so there are a few more questions about this but all are along a similar line

I was just listening to KYW 1060, the news radio station in Philly that everyone listens to for traffic, weather, and school closings when it snows like it is currently...), and an ad for a Mike & Bruce Beach Boys show on July 27th in Atlantic City came on, Hard Rock casino. First I had heard it, or a BB themed concert ad in general, for awhile. Anyway, here's the links for those interested: https://www.hardrockhotels.com/atlantic-city/hotel-homehttps://www1.ticketmaster.com/the-beach-boys-now-then/event/02005637ED669536What stood out about the billing and ad included that it's being billed as "Now And Then"...anyone know what that title refers to beyond the obvious? For once there was no 50th anniversary tag to celebrate something from 1969, so I guess this tag replaced the 50th tag for 2019. I did not see on the web links nor hear in the radio ad the disclaimer about Brian-Al-Blondie not appearing at this show as someone saw in another market's promotions. What I noticed in the radio ad was that the majority of the BB's original music clips were using Brian's falsetto parts as the sound clip - Whether that's coincidence or not, it was noticeable. Considering the ad directed you to both the BB's and Mike's own website for more info, most of the audio heard in the spot was spotlighting Brian's falsetto hooks. I just found that a bit odd considering Mike's vocals would be a more expected spotlight to advertise his shows. Anyhoo... Now And Then appears to be the tour name since at least last June when they were in the UK. They had a t-shirt for it which had lots of pictures of the band from all the eras - concentric circles, sixties on outside, then seventies (including one with Ricky and Blondie), eighties, then one with a 90s photo and reunion tour, and then finally in the centre the current touring band.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1969-70 Copyright Extension Release Prediction Thread

Do we know how the Pet Sounds 50th set did? I feel like we already had the boxset for that album, so I can't imagine that one faired too well either.
In the UK, the week after the 50th set, Pet Sounds re-entered the charts at 89, then up to 26, then down to 71, before going out again. However, the 2CD re-release was also at the same time, so it doesn't necessarily mean the big boxset sold well. Sunshine Tomorrow entered at 49. Admittedly went straight back out again, but no digital download copyright extension has come into the UK charts. Meanwhile, the RPO album spent 3 weeks in the Top 10 and 10 weeks in the charts total. Obviously completely different beasts, but you know some accountant somewhere will be asking why they bother releasing all these extensions that don't sell well and not an RPO every year. (and while I'm here reeling off chart figures, Live - The 50th Anniversary Tour went to number 82 for a week.) [/list]

This was some weeks ago but I heard The Creeping Goldfish's cover of Big Sur while grocery shopping on a Saturday morning. A deep cut to say the least.
It's actually The Secret Goldfish, for those of you like me who tried to look up "The Creeping Goldfish Big Sur" and just got a lot of articles about giant goldfish.

Get the 12-track album Reason for the Season – featuring an array of new holiday songs and Christmas classics that range from bright guitar and horn-filled pop and rock and tracks, and softer traditional carols and ballads. Sam Hollander (One Direction, Panic! at the Disco, Train) and Steve Greenberg (Hanson, AJR) produced five tracks on the album including the jubilant title track and the buoyant anthems “It Must Be Christmas” and “Finally it’s Christmas” featuring Hanson.
Grammy-winning producer Michael Lloyd (Dirty Dancing) and The Beach Boys’ musical director Scott Totten also served as producers on the album. Lloyd produced two tracks including a new version of “Alone on Christmas Day” and “Little St. Nick.” Totten collaborated with Love on five additional tracks featuring all of Love’s children (All Love) Ambha, Brian, Christian and Hayleigh Love on “Do You Hear What I Hear,” “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “O Holy Night,” “Away in a Manger” and “Bring a Torch.”
Reason for the Season is out October 26th on digital, CD, and LP formats.
So, the good news for those who found Lloyd's production on the remakes disc of Unleash The Love a bit...distasteful, is that he seems to be down to two tracks here.

O Come All Ye Faithful (with All Love) 12. O Holy Night (feat. Ambha Love with All Love) Growing up in my household in Southern California on the corner of Mt. Vernon & Fairway, Music was an integral part of life, But there was no other time of the year where music was more part of life than during the holidays. The grand piano, organ and harp in the living room provided the instrumental backing to all the vocals. The Holidays were a time of family get-togethers, gift giving , wonder feasts and most memorably, Christmas carols sung in harmony with one another. Songs Like “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Little St. Nick” combined with songs that remind us of the Reason for the Season; celebrating an event that took place in the little town of Bethlehem over 2000 years ago, the birth of Jesus, which for many became a birth of hope , peace, unity & love. As the words of “O Holy Night” say “His Law is love and His gospel is peace, “Jesus taught us to love one another. That message needs to be heard today more than ever before. So, as we celebrate and enjoy all the wonderful traditions of the holiday season, Lets hold in our hearts the Reason for the Season. Peace & Love Mike Love

From https://www.rockcellarmagazine.com/2013/09/04/bruce-johnston-interview-beach-boys/ Bruce Johnston: During that Friends era, we were wearing the white suits and I remember doing some of the songs from Friends, which to me was a very weak album although the track Friends is fabulous. Listen to the bass on it, it’s 6/8 jazz acoustic bass. I did not like the Friends album because I thought it was wimpy. I don’t think we were doing anything where Brian was at full strength. We had to do some of the Friends stuff on the road and it just used to make me wince because it was wimpy. But we were promoting that album and played some of that stuff but people really wanted to hear the hits.
You have to be very careful when you play unknown music to people, you have to wrap it around the hits to keep them distracted.
Some of the Friends stuff is so subtle that it was hard to make it come to life in a live setting.

Anyone know why Nelson is not on this tour, and who is taking his place on percussion? Sorry if I missed the discussion
Guy named Jim Lasesa who knows Darian and the other band guys well. He’s on Facebook. Nelson isn’t on FB anymore; no idea what happened to him. Yeah, he's still playing his own shows though. He's doing his thing. PS. It's Jim Laspesa Yeah, seems he is touring the UK for the next few weeks http://nelsonbragg.com/tour/

I have no interest in the symphonic disc, but sadly, that is the kind of stuff the general public buys. Maybe we will get a combined 68/69 set next year.
I would love to know who and why thinks the public wants this? Is there a poll that is taken of what shutoff should be released?? The fact that lots of people brought the Elvis / Roy Orbison ones is why they think the public wants it - and considering it spent 3 weeks in the UK Top 10 albums and is still, 8 weeks later, in the Top 100, I'd say they were right.
