I've gotten a bit reluctant to view this thread, because whenever I do, I get Sloop John B going through my head again.  LOL

Altogether now! "We come on the Sloop John B ..."

If this were the 1963 demo version, I'd give it a 5. I love the song. Maybe as an Ohio native I'm biased. The vocals on this version are just ... </sigh>.

Interesting. I hope we get more details soon.

Has no one mentioned "Brian Wilson" by the Barenaked Ladies?

I assumed this was some sort of exercise in avoiding that obvious answer. I find it hard to believe this wasn't the first answer to come to everyone's mind.

I've had Sloop John B going through my head for, like, 3 or 4 days now.

Have no idea how it got in there, didn't hear it anywhere. It just popped in there.

"Sloop John B" is almost always going through my head. I sing it to my son every night before bed.

Just the other day, though, "I Can Hear Music" was similarly, randomly running through my mind.

All right, Adult/Child FTW! Make it so! Who do we talk to to make it so?
183  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's next solo album (NPP followup) speculation and info thread on: February 22, 2018, 12:35:05 PM
Is Brian finally getting to that real rock and roll record he's been talking about since working with Jeff Beck?

Gettin Hungry,

At this point, I think I'd rather get an album with a complete "Life Suite."  Even though Brian and his band can tear through some early BBs classics in concert, I think the MOR/AC stuff seems to be a little more in his wheelhouse when it comes to the studio.

Me too. The full suite would be great to hear. It just seemed like Waddy has the guitar chops and session experience to be a better fit than working with Beck. At any rate, curious to hear what -- if anything -- comes from these sessions Blondie teased.

I found myself listening and thinking, "Just shut up and play already!" Several, several times. I can't imagine how I would have felt if I were actually in the audience for one of these shows. You can see why Lei'd in Hawaii was abandoned, because a lot of the goofing off can't even be edited out to come up with solid performance.

I've been giving this album a bit of a re-evaluation lately, and it's much better than I initially thought. However, this is still a clunker. 2/5
189  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: WIBN in final (?) Nancy comic strip on: February 20, 2018, 10:45:37 AM
So ... anyway ... I'm still shocked by two revelations from this whole discussion:
1.) People actually read that Nancy comic? I've always lumped it in with Family Circus and skipped it.
2.) Now that the comic referenced the Beach Boys, do I have to go back and read 80-some years of strips to get the payoff?

They should get someone to illustrate the story for a book and CD release. My son could use another bedtime storybook. I gave it a 5.

Archival releases, ideally on CD and at least via digital, that's the way to go.

This thing where they do a rererererereissue of something on vinyl for RSD, it's not hurting anybody, but that should be a "back burner" sort of thing for BRI and Capitol. At best, some vinyl RSD item could be used to kick start promotion for a larger project.

I'm most certainly *not* interested in vinyl-only releases of any previously unreleased material where the material isn't also offered as a digital download and/or on CD.

I agree. I'd like the RSD releases to complement or help promote bigger archival BB releases. But I think they've done a nice job with what the recent items, all of which were previously available on CD or otherwise. I thought Bambu was very nicely packaged.

I get that not everyone is into vinyl, but it's been having a moment the last few years. Why not have BB thrown in there with all the hipster offerings?

While not a RSD release, they are releasing......you guessed....Pet Sounds in a green and yellow vinyl record.

I saw that. I even entered a contest to win one, but I couldn't imagine actually buying one. I don't much go for gimmicky vinyl.

I like the Lei'd in the Hawaii idea or an expanded In Concert release.

I don't know of anything personally but I would LOVE to see either  an official Adult/Child release, or maybe a collection of outtakes from the late 70s, early 80s (Stevie, Boys & Girls, Sweetie)

The ultimate release for me would be a proper release of the highlights from the Wilson/Paley Sessions.

I like the way you think! I would jump at Adult/Child and Wilson/Paley Sessions releases.

The Beach Boys have had a number of RSD releases over the past few years, from Becoming the Beach Boys and the Love & Mercy soundtrack to Dennis Wilson's Bambu (The Caribou Sessions), to name a few. Is there any rumblings of anything for this year?

Beautiful song by Mike. He deserves more ... Love ... for it.

To repeat, I didn't ask who Spector influenced. It's well-known/ well-written. I'm curious about single specific interest - what's inventive about Spector-producer? I discussed it with KDS initially, he made the mistake to bring up influences too but soon got what the actual question was. Influence & inventiveness is 2 different subjects.
It isn't denial but interest in knowing "his important place in recording history". Asking questions creates discussion. Which I did to get the clear fleshed out answer about Spector's inventiveness. The points in the last post add to the picture as well but, as I said, not Brian's/ everybody's influence by Spector.

RR1, the question you ask is strange. The whole conversation reads like this (to me):

Poster 1: The atom bomb was terrible.
Poster 2: What was so terrible about it? Lots of things kill people.
Poster 1: It killed Thousands of people.
Poster 2: So what?  Candy kills thousands of people too. What's so important about the atom bomb?
Poster 1: Well it's terrible. That is a fact.
Poster 2: What is fact there? That is your opinion. I think candy has killed far more people. What is so special about atom bomb? Tell me specifically.
Poster 1: It has potential to destroy the whole planet.
Poster 2: I have never seen it destroy a whole planet. Again, why single you the atom bomb.
Poster 1: I didn't single it out. I was just making a statement.
Poster 2: Your statement singled out the atom bomb. Everyone always talks about the atom bomb like it has killed the most people in earth's history. Whenever I ask for specifics why or to defend their statement I get the same boring reasons.
Poster 1: Agree to disagree. The atom bomb WAS terrible.

Apply, rinse, and repeat.
 3D

Amen.

I regret not seeing Brian Wilson's Pet Sounds tour last year, when it rolled through my area. Money was tight, and I hoped he would come back this year. My fingers are still crossed that more shows will be continue to be added.

New shows continue to be added, and the Pet Sounds Tour looks like the Energizer Bunny right now.

True. I'm hoping Cleveland/Akron makes the cut.
