101  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Glenn Gould on: January 28, 2006, 09:30:37 AM
One of my idols.
Anyone who hasn't should see the brilliant film 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould.

Excellent film! I don't know how well it really captures his personality and everything (as I've never met the man), but I thought the film was excellent. What can I say about Glenn Gould! He's just the greatest. He's unequaled. His touch, his feeling, his clarity, his understanding of the music on the deepest possible level is just unbelieveable. Just watching him play sends shivers down my spine. I just love it when he plays a fugue or sinfonia so slow that were it anyone else you would just fall asleep or kill yourself after being subjected to it, but with him it's just pure bliss. I really can't say which Goldberg I like better. I listen to the 1955 one more, but the 1981 version is truly unique and ambitious, and I especially enjoy watching the video of it. My favourite of Gould's renditions is of The Art of the Fugue, although I wish he would have recorded the completed work. Actually, I like the piano renditions that were, I guess, put on as bonus tracks on the CD more than the organ ones. His performance of Contrapunctus 14 is just amazing.
102  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: January 28, 2006, 07:52:58 AM
A Scam??!!! To get Sunflower and Surf's Up the way they were meant to be heard by the producers and engineer for a little fee of twenty dollars for all of Mr. Desper's time and efforts? I'll tell you what's a scam, and that's the record company refusing to sell the correct CD/LP for all these years. I personally can't wait to get my copy, and I am extremely grateful to Mr. Desper for allowing us to get this for only $20, as opposed to having to pay for the $1000+ 360 surround unit in order to hear the albums correctly.

I believe it says in the liner notes which songs he sang on on BW88, but I can't help you figure out which voice is his.

105  Smiley Smile Stuff / Brian Wilson Solo Albums / Re: Brian Wilson 88 Revisited Again on: January 25, 2006, 11:04:39 AM
I love this album! It's one of my favourite Brian albums, and by far the best album of his solo career (except for SMiLE), in my opinion. His vocals are great, much better than his current vocals, and the tone of his vocals is much more like 60's Brian than anything following this album. The songs are amazing, and I think that's exactly what's lacking from his more recent efforts (I guess the only more recent efforts of new songs are Imagination and Getting In Over My Head, but the song selection is much better than either of those). Every song on the entire album is a gem! And the album rocks almost as much as Love You. I'm actually a fan of the productoin for the most part. It's really got that Love You vibe to it, and I would bet Brian was more involved in the production of this album than any of his more recent efforts. I don't mind the synths at all, but the only complaint I've got about this entire album (literally the ONLY complaint) is the electronic drums. That sound just doesn't go with this music. So if he used real drums throughout the album, I would say this is practically a perfect album.
106  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If you could change Smile... on: January 25, 2006, 10:01:21 AM
Yeah, the regular piano is definitely a real acoustic grand piano, no question about it.
107  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If you could change Smile... on: January 25, 2006, 07:31:52 AM
I agree with Mitchel--get "False Barnyard" in there! And more importantly, "Vega-Tables Part 3"! I really wish they would have used fades on the album. I think it could have been much stronger. Not everything has to completely flow together in order for it to be coherent. And sometimes I feel like it suffers because they put the songs immediately after each other with no breaks. For example, I think the break between "You Are My Sunshine" and "Cabinessence" should be at least a couple of seconds in length. It just seems too rushed, like they were trying to scrunch the songs right up next to each other, whereas with a two second break you would steel feel the coherency, in fact I think it would have been even smoother. I also wish they would have incorporated more of the "Heroes and Villains" intro, not necessarily at the beginning of the song, but somewhere on the album.

The second movement is flawless in my opinion, except for the outro to "Surf's Up." Once again, I think this definitely would have benefitted from a fade; and I also think they should have done it like the original. On the original it starts out with a few bars of just the "Child" vocals, and then the "A children's song..." voclal kicks in, whereas on BWPS it starts off immediately with the "Children's song..." vocals. I don't like it that way nearly as much. Also, Mike's bass vocals on this part really make the original recording fantastic. I'm not saying they needed Mike up there singing it on BWPS (though it would have been nice, but I'm being realistic), but they desperately need a decent bass vocalist.

I love the third movement, but I don't think the "I'm in Great Shape" intro fits in with the rest of the album.  I know it's the Cantina section, but the orchestration doesn't fit in with anything else on the album, though it does sound nice. I also don't like the transition between "Workshop" and "Vege-Tables." I'm not sure how I would have done it myself, but come on, a crossfade?!? You can do better than that, Brian! Everything else is great (except for the "Good Vibrations" lyrics)! "In Blue Hawaii" is amazing! It's probably my favourite song on the album, and I love the transition between "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow" and it. Looking at that preliminary trackllist, I'm really thinking "Fall Breaks" would have sounded really good in the third movement, and the rest of the tracklist looks like it might be very interesting. Then, of course, the fake tack piano and harpsichord are completely inexcusable! I don't really mind if they record it on Pro Tools (though it probably would have sounded much better had it been recorded analog), but please use real instruments! As I said, it's inexcusable. That's the best word to describe it. Anyways, overall it's a great album, and I enjoy it very much.
108  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: simply vinyl pet sounds on: January 24, 2006, 07:58:31 PM
You can get one of the mono reissues for less than ten dollars. The 1972 reissue that came with So Tough (which is, according to pretty much anyone who's heard it, the best sounding pressing anywhere) generally goes for around $5-$10 on ebay, and the green label Capitol reissue (which is also said to be one of the best sounding) goes for around $5.00.
109  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Whats your favorite song about heartache? on: January 23, 2006, 08:38:30 PM
Frank Black's got some pretty incredible ones. How about practically the entire Show Me Your Tears album, Especially "New House of the Pope." The heartache and sadness and unbearable pain just ooze out of that one.

Mark Mulcahy also deserves a mention with songs such as "Micon the Icon," among others.
110  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Definitive Psychedelic Albums on: January 23, 2006, 08:35:26 PM
Let's not forget that masterpiece of psychedelia by Van Dyke Parks entitled Song Cycle--the best psychedelic album of all time as far as I'm concerned (Piper is a VERY close second).

The words Beach Boys and mass murderers should never be used in the same sentence. Period.
112  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Origins of Brians '80s' voice on: January 23, 2006, 01:39:44 PM
I was referring to live vocals. In the studio he does fine. You're right about there not being many of any merit before ninety-nine, but take, for example, his performance of Orange Crate art on the IJWMFTT documentary. It's practically flawless, and he could never pull that off like that today in a live situation, especially with that range. Which leads to something else. In the early nineties his falsetto was still in great shape (obviously not the same as the early years, but in very decent shape, all things considered), but all of the sudden on his first tour in '98 or '99, whenever it was, he could barely sing falsetto, and now he can't at all (you can argue that he does on Surf's Up and what not all you want, but listen to him live. Every time he goes into falsetto it's just raspy and airy. There's no strength to it at all.)
113  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Origins of Brians '80s' voice on: January 23, 2006, 08:05:04 AM
The thing that puzzles me about Brian's voice is that, however much the tone may have changed in the 80's and especially early nineties (BW 88 sounds very similar to young Brian in many parts--in fact, most of it to my ears. But then listen to Sweet Insanity, Paley sessions, or IJWMFTT--the tone is completely differet), his vocals were still consistently in tune up until '99 when, all of the sudden, out of nowhere he began going out of tune pretty regularly, which progressively got worse until about 2004, at which point it has pregressively gotten a little better. Is that just old age?
114  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Origins of Brians '80s' voice on: January 23, 2006, 07:58:55 AM
...when I read that allegedly Brian had a some sort of drug induced stroke which may have explained his slurred delivery thereafter.

As far as I know, all the experts seem to agree that Brian has never had a stroke.
115  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Gear on: January 19, 2006, 06:32:31 PM
There's a picture of Brian from the Hawaii 1967 thing playing that "Beatle" Bass.

Question: Did Brian keep any instrument other than his Piano in his home?

An organ or two, plus all of the groups instruments when the studio was at his house. There's that picture of him playing a Hammond organ with all the dolls or whatever they are in the SMiLE tour booklet.
116  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Mark Linett Thread on: January 19, 2006, 06:31:01 PM
Mr. Linett, do you have any clue as to the whereabouts of Brian's old white Baldwin organ (Mr. Desper suggested you might know)? Does Brian still own it? Does someone else own it? Did it just disappear or drop off the face of the earth?
117  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Gear on: January 19, 2006, 06:28:24 PM
By the way, Aiztrgoiyugsaitylsufg, this is a great idea!
118  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Gear on: January 19, 2006, 06:26:55 PM
Mark L. will know where Brian's white Baldwin organ is located.

That's exactly what I've been wondering for quite a while. I believe I'll go over to his thread and ask him. I'm assuming it's probably not still in Brian's possession, but it can't have dropped off the face of the earth, and I doubt anyone would be stupid enough to destroy it.
119  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: What live act must you see before you die? on: January 18, 2006, 11:49:18 AM
Definitely Tom Waits.
120  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: Does anyone own a celesta? on: January 18, 2006, 08:25:49 AM
Hmm, well if that's all it does...

I would think seriously about investing money in that... a good glockenspiel would surely fill that gap fine.  Perhaps there's even a way of muting a glockenspiel to make the sound warmer.

A glockenspiel doesn't have a sustain pedal, and would be much more difficult to play, but I'd like a glockenspiel, nonetheless, if I ever have the money to get one.
121  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Does anyone own a celesta? on: January 17, 2006, 08:36:05 PM
Where do you get them? I found a company called Schiedmayer that makes them, and I emailed them asking for a price, which I'm guessing will be very expensive. I believe Yamaha makes them, but their website doesn't give any information on how to obtain them. It just lists authorized Yamaha dealers, and none of the ones it listed for where I live carry celestas. I'd really just like an old secondhand celesta, for less than $1,000, even if it doesn't sound good. If anyone has any suggestions on where to look I'd be delighted.
122  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Best deal ever? on: January 16, 2006, 04:00:45 PM
I just got a T-2458 on ebay, advertised as VG+ (both record and cover), for only $7.99! Either I just got the best deal in the entire universe or something is incredibly wrong with it and I'm just the only fool to bid on it. I've never seen a VG+ go for less than $30 on ebay (except for some imbecile who did one buy it now for $25 a while back, and I was an even bigger imbecile for not getting it!), and they generally go for around $45-$50. Anyways, it will be nice to finally replace my old copy with writing all over the cover and hiss all the way through. Perhaps at this particular moment it's just not in great demand, in which case some of you may be interested in this if it stays around the same price: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4820312657&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1
123  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Keyboard sounds on the "Wild Honey" LP on: January 16, 2006, 05:59:20 AM
It's really really really really extremely easy to make any piano sound like that.

One each piano for each note, you'll have one two or three strings for a single key.  Most of them are in ones and twos on the first twenty or so keys and from the middle and higher you'll have three strings for each note.  All of them have to be perfectly in tune with eachother in order to sound like a normal piano.  However, say on the note C, you have three strings.  Slightly lower or raise one of those three strings out of tune (you'd usually leave the middle string alone) and you get a sort of warped effect on the note (there's a better term for it); AKA the Smiley Smile/Wild Honey piano sound.  You can make any piano sound like that within five to ten minutes, however I only did the notes in the song so it took like five for me.  It's easy to bring the piano back to normal mode quickly too.

You don't really detune the piano, but you detune the unisons of the individual notes.

Okay, so did you just detune one of the three strings, or did you do two of them? And what do you do on the lower strings where there's only one string per note? Just keep it in tune or detune it slightly?
124  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Adult Child on: January 15, 2006, 01:43:54 PM
I'm slightly confused. I always thought Adult Child was recorded BEFORE Love You, but based on this discussion it would appear it came after. Which one is it?
125  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: January 04, 2006, 10:33:39 AM
It turned out it was the air vent. I unscrewed it, slipped a felt disc underneath it, and voilą, problem solved! thanks for the tip!
