27  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Blend - w/ or w/out Dennis on: April 10, 2016, 12:26:04 AM
I feel as though I'm able to hear him in the blend in a lot of the Today! songs, particularly Please Let Me Wonder and Kiss Me Baby. And with him singing lead on two of the album's songs anyway, I often view Today! as being the best showcase for Dennis's voice until Friends (he certainly was quite prevalent in the earlier albums' blends, though). But even still, I can hear him clearly on many Smiley Smile tracks (which is easy, since they often traded solo vocals throughout). I can appreciate his place in the stack, as I'm usually able to hit his notes better than the others'.
Disregarding that, though, I feel like his voice almost adds a tiny bit of dissonance to the blend, something a little rough around the edges. Al and Dennis both have what I would perceive as a "grit" to their voices that make the blend that much more fleshed-out, but Al's voice is somewhat more amorphous, sometimes sounding Brian-esque and other times closer to Mike. I think Dennis maintained a higher degree of uniqueness, even after his voice became raspy.
I agree with that last part. In my early years of BBfandom, I would often confuse the voices of Brian, Carl and Al. I don't remember mistaking Dennis for someone else, except on "Catch A Wave".

And that's Mike anyway.  Grin

When Brian's book comes out are you going to say it would have been a better book if Mike hadn't put Brian under pressure by also writing a book?

Given that Brian's book was initially announced a few days shy of three years ago, I somehow doubt it.  Grin

Touché, monsieur pussycat.

As best I can render it, on the closing round, when Blondie (?) sings "Funky.... I still remember funky pretty", in the gap Brian sings (deep in the mix and mostly in one channel) "funky come back, funky come back." It's most audible, to me at any rate, at 3.28.

Or is it "greasy ah see" ? Confussed.
31  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love book out in September on: April 10, 2016, 12:12:20 AM
And the rock media loves nothing more than a tortured genius that dies tragically young. If Carl had been the one that died before turning 40, would he now be praised as the other genius in the band?

That would have been in 1985 or thereabouts... say after the Levine album. Based purely on that, I'd say, no. Two mediocre solo albums and a scant handful of BB compositions don't stack up against POB, Bambu and Dennis' BB-related canon 1968-79. Carl was many things, almost all of them admirable, but a genius of any order (except maybe in keeping the band for completely imploding) he was not.
32  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's Book released October 11th on: April 10, 2016, 12:07:16 AM
Correct. I get the strong feeling that there was also heavy pressure from Reprise to get Brian involved in new material, given the recent success Capitol had achieved with minimal outlay.
33  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: April 09, 2016, 11:39:40 PM
According to Wikipedia, Good Vibrations was just certified 2x platinum, like last week!?!? That process seems mighty odd.

Not so much a new certification as a correcting of an earlier, incorrect certification:

"In December 1966, the record was their first single certified gold by the RIAA. After the criteria for a gold record was modified, the RIAA failed to correct the listing, despite "Good Vibrations" being eligible for status as a platinum record as of 2015. On March 30, 2016, the single was certified platinum for sales of 2 million copies sold by the RIAA."

That should read "recertified platinum...".

Wasn't this a couple of years ago? I wonder who got all that stuff.

As I recall (that is, imperfectly), BRI got an injunction on any of it being sold.
35  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's Book released October 11th on: April 09, 2016, 11:06:51 PM
It does seem someone was pushing Brian to be active in the band again in 76, maybe it was Landy, maybe it was Mike, maybe it was ....whoever.

The "Brian's Back !" campaign was the brainchild of Steve Love.
36  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: A question about Funky Pretty on: April 09, 2016, 02:12:05 PM
Brian, and it's "Funky come back".

Uh... which iconic 60s single is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year ? Suddenly it seems... less odd.

Remember, RIAA certifications aren't automatic: they have to be requested, and paid for.
38  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BBs scary travel experiences, or mishaps on the road on: April 09, 2016, 11:48:41 AM
Personally my favorite bbs road story is the time a guard wouldn't let you them into the Ohio state fairgrounds until they finally bought tickets.  He simply didn't have a clue who they were and wasn't letting anyone pass through without paying

What year did that happen? I saw The Beach Boys play at the Ohio State Fair multiple times. 1983, 86, 88. I believe they also played there in 74 and 82.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... why not try looking on 10452 ?
39  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Interesting Ebay find on: April 09, 2016, 02:28:53 AM
Whoa ! That's the real (reel ?) deal. And yes, only 25 were mailed out. After an original Smile booklet, this may just be the rarest BB-associated item there is (unless you count Brian's bowling shoes...).
40  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: A question about Funky Pretty on: April 09, 2016, 02:21:54 AM
Correctamundo.

On the topic of stuff misheard: for years, I thought the bvs on the second chorus of "Trader" was "And they believed him": sounded like it, and it fit the rest of the lyric. Then, when scheduled to do a live rendition at a BB fan gathering and having Jack's email addy, I decided to double check. Back came the answer:

"They don't believe our deity".

Ah. And um.  Shocked

My point: what you think you're hearing isn't necessarily what you actually hearing.

My second point: listened to "FP" again. There's no "g". None at all. Nada. Zilch. Diddly with a light frosting of squat.  Grin
41  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: A question about Funky Pretty on: April 08, 2016, 11:05:59 PM

Ah, the mystery of the human body. Exact same recording, diametrically opposed conclusions. Splendid.  Grin

No mystery, really. Your inability to hear the "Gr" in "Greece" simply means you're suffering from poor auditory discrimination. My condolences!  Grin

My dear sir, I have never discriminated against anything or anyone, I'll have you know !  Grin

Eh... OK, except maybe f*ckwits and sh*tweasels. Maybe.

One thing that ticks me off is people quoting from the setlist site (not Eric 's wonderful one) because almost all the old shows they list were copied from the research Andrew and I did for bellagio over the years. Only difference is that when we find an error at bellagio we update it while those other sites that copied us just keep the old errors we've corrected.  What I'm saying is that the only accurate source of such info is the gigs and sessions section of bellagio hosted by esq and compiled by Andrew and I with help and input from friends like c man and bgas

Me too. And here is the apposite place to point out that the vast, vast majority of the concert research is Ian's. Which is why I can say without fear of blowing my own trumpet (well, too much...) that said section of 10452 is the very best online resource for Beach Boys concerts information 1961-date. Odd how many posters here seem to either be unaware of it, or ignore it.
43  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's Book released October 11th on: April 08, 2016, 10:53:52 PM
I know that it's common to refer to the WIBN book as Landy's book, but Todd Gold was the actual writer. He's ghost-written a slew of celebrity biographies  (http://www.amazon.com/Todd-Gold/e/B001ITYC0Q), and I wish we had him on record to talk about how that book came about and what the process of writing it was like. How much access did he have to Brian? I'm guessing not much since so many stories in the book are re-workings of other articles on the Beach Boys but rewritten in first person to make it sound like Brian was telling the story (Gold admitted as much).

We do - shortly after the book was published and everyone was ripping him a deserved new one for using other people's writing without so much as crediting them, he sent a letter, to Billboard I think, explaining he had to do that as Brian's responses were mostly very terse, so he had to flesh out the "narrative". Brian himself has stated that all he did was "a bunch of interviews", and I'm not alone in being told that those responses consisted largely of "yes", "no" or "I don't remember". Whichever way you slice it, a despicable excuse for a book.

After this post I am signing out of Smiley Smile and I’m never logging back in again. Nor will I read the responses to this post (if any responses are made).

I believe that, in the light of current events on the main forum, the only possible comment is...

"Liar, liar, pants on fire !".  Grin

Iffn you're gonna flounce, best stay flounced.

Pretty sure it was premièred on pirate radio. On Radio London's "Field's Fab Forty" for October 16th 1966, it was  listed as Tony Windsor's "climber". Wasn't actually listed on the "chart" itself until the 30th.

Three shows - one on the 14th, two on the 15th.  According to 10452.

Fascinating... had not come across this before... Brian's demo for Almost Summer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EPgyiBaLVM

And here's the "Beach Boys" version of the title theme... with lyric references to Brian, Al, Dennis and Carl.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPYi1CXzcAI

That's the movie version. Still by Celebration. Followed by a radically different version of "Sad, Sad Summer".
49  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Found \ on: April 08, 2016, 01:50:23 PM
May I point out, mildly, that "Almost Summer" wasn't a Beach Boys release ?

I can't help but find it anything other than deeply amusing that the poster doing the lion's share of the stirring is someone who recently flounced off in hugely public manner, vowing never to return. Epic fail.  Grin

Because he thought you were behind it!  Cheesy

I'm guessing someone's feeling pretty silly right now...
