1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What do YOU think the Train and Barking Dogs mean? on: October 12, 2009, 09:04:10 PM
I think is symbolizes the passing of a certain period in the narrarator's life (BW) The period in which the songs describe. Or just the passing of youth into uncertain adulthood.

To me, Pet Sounds is THE best break-up album ever! It starts out with the youthful optimism of a new relationship and then goes through all the usual ups and downs and then a break-up and then the guy sees the girl later and her hair is short and she's now hard and mean and bitter and not the same person he fell in love with.

I agree. To me the whole album is about girl problems, and at the end of it - well, life goes on. There's a train outside, barrelling through.

I saw a mention of this with links on an early thread, but it had been taken off YouTube. Does anyone have footage of this?
Also - have there been any other moments where the two have crossed paths?

7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / "The Beach Boys" MFP 1382 - Best compilation ever on: May 09, 2009, 04:35:04 PM
BB compilations are a dime a dozen in record bins as I'm sure you all know but I was drawn to this weird one, from probably about '68.. check out the track listing! I dunno whether Music for Pleasure only got the rights to a handful of random songs, or someone working there was a 1337 BBs fan with a sense of humour or what... Certaintly not a bad selection of songs but not your typical greatest hits. I'm surprised it got printed at all.

Side One:
How She Boogalooed It
Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)
Car Crazy Cutie
We'll Run Away
Misirlou
Whistle In   (LOL?)

Side Two:
Summertime Blues
Anna Lee the Healer
Boogie Woodie
Tell Me Why
Louie Louie
Good to My Baby

I love "Summer of Love" - always have, always will. If you stop jacking off to Cabinessence for a few minutes and watch the video, you might actually have some fun.

11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Has anyone met Brian Wilson? on: January 26, 2009, 06:33:27 PM
Met Brian after Australian premiere of That Lucky Old Sun at the State Theatre in Sydney, January 2008. I'd planned some sort of indepth conversation or another but when he came out I realised I wouldn't get much time. "Hi Brian!" I said. "That Lucky Old Sun's amazing." I shook his hand; I remember how kindly his eyes were, like Father Time. Then he disappeared backstage.

Oh, and from the next day: I was waiting out the side door of the theatre to get Brian to sign my copy of All Summer Long, but the only people I ran into were Wondermints members. I asked Sanahaja to sign it anyway, for the hell of it. He told me straight up that he refused to sign such an album as he had nothing to do with it.. but he knew someone who did. With a gleam in his eye he disappeared inside and came back ten minutes later with Brian's signature. Thanks Darren!
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How Do You Treat Your BBs Collection? on: January 19, 2009, 02:20:13 PM
I'm more or less b). I only buy vinyl and never CDs - sometimes I feel the worn-outness is part of the charm, my copy of Wild Honey for example is scratched to hell, but I wouldn't trade all that surface noise for anything. That said, I try to keep everything in the same condition I got it in as much as possible. I bought that recent 180g reissue of Pet Sounds and that sh*t will be kept as immaculate as possible tyvm.

17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Bruce Johnston talks reunion idea. on: December 24, 2008, 04:33:02 PM

That would be a nice way to retire the name "The Beach Boys."

The problem is, I don't think Mike would want to "retire the name". After this reunion concert/tour, Mike would most likely go on touring under the name "The Beach Boys"... And that is one of the reasons why you couldn't advertise such an event as being a "farewell" concert/tour.
This is also why I think it would be hard to market a reunion to Joe Public, because "The Beach Boys" never went away.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Grammy noms are out. on: December 05, 2008, 03:27:43 PM
Like the Grammys ever really mattered that much.

Grammys are kind of like Rolling Stone. If Rolling Stone recognises Brian in some list or another that they've chafed up to sell magazines, y'all would be "ZOMG SO WELL DESERVED, WHAT AN HONOUR" etc, if they snub him it's "Psch, not like it matters"
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Original X Records pressings of "Surfin'' on: December 02, 2008, 04:54:41 AM
How much do these go far? Do they surface on eBay too often?
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Yet another alternate universe proposal - 70's Only on: November 17, 2008, 03:21:55 AM
I like the idea of 15 Big Ones being the band's one and only album.

MAD UNIVERSE!
That would be so awesome, hahaha.
Also, according to my proposal, "Good Vibrations" would be released for the first time on In Concert.  Cheesy
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Yet another alternate universe proposal - 70's Only on: November 16, 2008, 02:36:29 AM
The band's first album is Sunflower. They break up after L.A.
I reckon they'd be a tremendously underrated band, with very hard-to-find albums and a cult following similar to the Grateful Dead.
What do you think?
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys sampled on: November 14, 2008, 04:46:01 PM
I adore that J.Dilla album. It's been in heavy rotation as of late.
Isn't it fantastic. It's like the equivalent of aural slash fanfic. A very unlikely hookup of two of my greatest loves.
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Beach Boys sampled on: November 14, 2008, 08:29:46 AM
What are some interesting examples of The Beach Boys/related being sampled in modern music?

I can think of, um
"Do it Again" in "Remember" by Air from Moon Safari
"Cool, Cool Water", "Johnny Carson", "Matchpoint of Our Love" and others in various mixes by The Avalanches (I got into the Beach Boys through Cool Cool Water, strangely enough)
"Don't Worry Baby" in "Push It" by Garbage (sorta.. she asked brian for permission anyway)
The J. Dilla vs. Pet Sounds mashup album.. SO GOOD
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Underrated Beach Boys (or related) songs on: November 12, 2008, 02:09:27 PM
We'll Run Away
And Your Dream Comes True
It's OK - should have been a bigger hit
Matchpoint of Our Love - One of the first Beach Boys songs I ever heard, strangely enough. I heard a genius mashup mix of Matchpoint vs. The Chemical Brothers' "Star Guitar" by The Avalanches.
Keepin' the Summer Alive -- why wasn't this a single?!
Passing Friend
Summer of Love
