1  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Pet Sounds on: July 22, 2018, 06:40:39 PM
Two months later, I got to say, my ears are slightly enjoying the DCC version over AF. The only minor turn off to that one is having the "train/barking" coda as a separate track. I'll still keep my AF because from what I understand it's the closest to the original '66 mono LP you can find on cd. (Warts and all).
Also picked up the 2012 MFSL stereo version mastered by Rob Loverde. Loving the sound of that one!
I'm thinking of picking up the Greenline 2800 mono cd as well. One can never have enough copies of this timeless album.....as my wife lovingly rolls her eyes at me.

The audiophile in me has recently been researching various versions of PS on cd. I have the '93 and '09 Steve Hoffman mono mastered versions coming my way soon. As far as stereo versions on cd go, I own the '97 box set version, the 2001 mono/stereo version and the 50th anniversary version. Would really appreciate any input from you guys as to which other CD STEREO versions are worth picking up. Thanks.

The entire duration of "Salt Lake City". (2012 stereo). Just can't get enough of that song at the moment.

Are you referring to the Abracadabra 2 disc set?
I see that there are a few cd editions of Heart Food that were released post 2006. Just wondering if any of those have attempted to clean up the distortion.
6  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Judee Sill on: February 21, 2016, 03:40:13 PM
Having just recently gotten into the music of Judee Sill, can anyone tell me if there is a cd version of Heart Food out there that does not have the somewhat annoying/distracting distortion that my ears are picking up? Is that something that happened during the transfer to cd or was that there on the original LP to begin with?
Thanks.
7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson 2016 Tour Thread (Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Tour) on: January 29, 2016, 06:31:25 AM
I'm just a bit confused because on the U.S. package it states, "Individual photo with Brian", whereas the non U.S. package makes no mention of a photo, just a meet and greet.

So tier 1 $500 packages (non U.S.) DON'T include a premium reserved seat in the first 5 rows and a photo with Brian. Am I understanding this correctly? I'm waiting to see if they add a Canadian date to the tour. Preferably Toronto.

Drove an hour to see it.....and it was more than worth the drive!
For some reason the scene that stuck out in my mind the most was when Brian dropped acid and the backing track to Don't Talk began to play. I just loved that little moment. The girlfriend got a kick out of Van Dyke's exit from the pool area.
Also, how many of us got our picture taken with the Love And Mercy movie poster at the theatre? I can't be the only one.

OK. I need to know which CD version of O&O has the best mono mix. So many Damn versions of this album!

1) 40th anniversary edition with both the mono and stereo versions. (Repertoire)

2) 2011 "The CBS years 1967-1969" with both the mono and stereo versions as well as the unreleased R.I.P. album. (Repertoire)

3) 2008 (Big Beat UK) version with both mono and stereo versions.

Any help would be appreciated.

I was half paying attention to the scene, (I'm not a huge WD fan), but my girlfriend jokingly said, "It would be funny if they were playing The Beach Boys to lure the zombies." Moments later she looked at me and said, "It's Love And Mercy!". Honestly, I didn't even recognize it. Again, half paying attention. Which version was it?
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / BRIAN WILSON Q & A / If You Could Change One Thing About Any Beach Boys Album... on: January 26, 2015, 09:43:30 AM
Hi Brian. If you could change just one thing (anything at all) about any Beach Boys album, what would that be?

Thanks for doing what you do. You're the best!

What's the story with the little extended intro to Why Do Fools Fall In Love? Did Brian write that? I can't seem to find it on any pre-BB's versions but I feel like I've heard that piece of music before.

It seemed far too easy. Just gave my name and address. Was told it will be shipped out later today or tomorrow. Thanks to John for posting the contact info.

I had trouble "getting" Sgt. Pepper until I heard the mono mix. All of the hype for it is justified. The tonality and balance in the mix is PERFECT.

I was never a huge Beatles fan, but when I first heard the mono box set a few years back I was blown away. It gave me a whole new appreciation for their work. I rarely ever, (minus the last two albums), listen to their stereo mixes. Seriously, anyone who hasn't bothered giving the mono set a listen is truly missing out.

Just last night I discovered Paul McCartney's Ram album. I can't believe I went all this time without giving it a chance. I must have listened to Ram On about ten times in a row. What a great little gem.

Always liked me some STP.

I'd say Core is my least favourite album of theirs, with Tiny Music being my fav. One of the most underappreciated albums of the 90's....along with Soup by Blind Melon.

Purple was a big step forward in their evolution and a solid album from start to finish.

No.4 is so-so. The slower songs really shined. I Got You and Atlanta are gems.

Shangri-La Dee Da is a pretty varied album. Perhaps just a little bit too much filler on it. I think it would have worked better as a double album, as it was originally planned. Still, this album has some of my favourite STP tunes.

Their 2010 album is my second least favourite offering by them. Some good songs on there, but overall it kind of bored me.

Also, I'm usually not one for wild and showy guitar solos, but some of their solos just blow me away.

I'm pretty excited for this thing. I speak as someone who has yet to get any of the remasters and didn't bother picking up 50 Big Ones. I'll judge this set based on what is actually on it, and not what I had hoped would be on it. Sure, I wanted to finally hear certain songs in great quality, but there are songs on this set that I've never hear before, period. This is enough to make me a happy Beach Boys fan.

Obviously I'm not proclaiming to predict the future, but I can picture (wish) the BB's camp/Capitol releasing yet another summer hits package in the next couple of years with Carry Me Home on it being the marketed selling point for us, (The hardcore demographic).

Nothing official, but last Christmas my girlfriend made me a Murry Wilson snowglobe. That picture of him with a pipe. She put a little Xmas hat on him and it says, "I'm a genius, too". I'd like to think i'm the only person in the world with a Murry Wilson snowglobe.

Funny thing about me...I'd rather listen to the worst Beach Boys song that the best Beatles song. :/

Same here. Personally, i don't "feel the love", so to speak, when i'm listening to The Beatles like i do when i listen to the boys. It's hard to explain.
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys' calmest songs on: March 02, 2013, 04:11:58 PM
Cool, Cool Water (Sunflower). In particular, the remainder of the song after the water chant.
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / 'Rank the Tracks' / Re: Rank the tracks #11: Pet Sounds on: February 21, 2013, 07:08:54 PM
This is the best i could do without overthinking it/going insane.
Fav to least fav.

1. Caroline, No
2. Here Today
3. Wouldn't it be Nice
4. Don't Talk
5. You Still Believe in Me
6. IJWMFTT
7. God Only Knows
8. Let's Go Away for Awhile
9. That's Not Me
10. Sloop John B
11. I'm Waiting for the Day
12. Pet Sounds
13. I Know There's an Answer

The beauty of this album is that next time i listen to it i'm sure the order will be moved around.

I used to use the end of "Had to Phone Ya" as my ringtone...

If i actually had a cell phone that would be my choice. My girlfriend's is the Fire Intro. I try not to call her late at night when she's sleeping....don't want to freak her out.
