Here's my mix.
1. Untitled Instrumental [Spanish Guitar Piece] (Secret SMiLE Disc 2) 2. Heroes & Villians (Hawthorne) 3. Holidays (Odeon) 4. Heroes & Villians [Intro] (GV Box - Actually Fire Intro) 5. Do You Like Worms (Odeon) 6. Cabinessence (Extended Intro added* GV Box) 7. Heroes & Villians [Sections] (GV Box) 8. Prayer (GV Box) 9. Wonderful (Extended Intro added* Vigotone) (GV Box) 10. Child Is The Father Of The Man (Jazzy Part inserted at the start* Odeon) 11. Look (Odeon) 12. VegaTables (Hawthorne) 13. Wind Chimes (Extended Intro added* Secret SMiLE Disc 1) (GV Box) 14. Elements Part 1 [Fire] (Secret SMiLE Disc 2) 15. Waterchant (Odeon Cut from Cool, Cool, Water) 16. I Love To Say Da Da (Odeon) 17. Surfs Up [Instrumental + Demo] (Odeon)
*I didn't like how some of the songs started vocals straight away, with no musical introduction. I really enjoy the instrumental versions of the songs songs too, so I decided to often edit in the instrumental version (or part) of the song first.

I recently picked up a BB book on ebay for $5. "The Authorized Biography of The Beach Boys" by Byron Theiss. It's from the late 70's & actually has a fair bit of information about SMiLE. I'm considering scanning the relevant pages & sharing them here. That's not a breach for board rules is it??
The 1st printing of that book (white cover) had interesting artwork that was omitted from the considerably thinner reprint (yellow). Just FYI. Thats the one - I've got the 1st edition. I was pretty happy, I just bought it cause it was cheap.

You're asking the wrong person about that, babe. I really don't know. I just got the book by Kingsley Abbott Back to the Beach. Yesterday I got AGD's Guide to the ...... and the one by Paul Williams--How Deep is the Ocean??? Alibris is a great place as well. Did you hear about the benfit for Paul Williams? More of a general question Donnak - but thanks anyway. Looks like you've got some reading to do! Excuse my ignorance - but who is Paul Williams?

I've read the BB's sued Capitol AU for this after it came out & was promptly removed from sale. I expected a bidding war. I think its worth repeating the story behind the withdrawl of the Australian rarities set - conventional wisdom says it was because of a false claim that the Beach Boys played on the Survivors track on the album - this is not true according to Stephen McParland who compiled the album with Genn A Baker. At the Sydney get together in January 2008 (which Brian attended) McParland explained that the real problem was the use of the two Dennis tracks, Lady and Sound Of Free. As the Rarities album was coming out on Capital, a division of EMI and because the Dennis tracks were relesed on Paralophone, also a division of EMI, it was incorrectly assumed that they had the rights to use the tracks. Parlaphone promptly sent a letter asking for a licensing fee for the tracks or the album should be withdrawn. As only 500 albums were ever printed Capital Australia just decided to ignore the Parlaphone request and not reprint the album - so technically not withdrawn. The Survivors story has some basis as the guy from the band (sorry can't remember his name) did make a fuss and make threats so McParland and and Baker basically said "yeah, yeah, sorry" and let that be - the real reason was the Dennis tracks licencince issue with Parlaphone. Wow, thats for all that info too!

Really looking foward to this DVD. My local online store isn't shipping till the 2nd of Feb - but sounds like it'll be well worth the wait.
I was watching the samples of the DVD on Brian's site with headphones on & I'm pretty sure I picked up some double tracking of Brian's lead in places - might of been Jeff backing him up though, as he often does. I really prefer "warts n all" live footage - not smoothed over edited stuff. Oh well.....

I have very good reason to believe that the track in question was recorded 3/26/68, during the Friends sessions.
Anybody know what Friend's songs, if any, they were working on that day? Darn it, now I have to find a new intro to "Heroes And Villains" for my SMiLE mix.... Ditto

What do fellow Smiley Smile boarders think of the band?
Been an Australian, I am probabily exposed to them more than others - but their more recient work is amazing. Forget their early "grunge" stuff DIORAMA is a remarkable record, kinda symphonic prog rock. Their latest YOUNG MODERN is more akin to quirky pop songs. Van Dyke Parks has contributed string arrangements to their last few albums too - that can't be bad. Discuss.
