From what I've read, a Smile EP probably would not have worked.  EP's had died out in the US around 1963/1964.  Elvis had released a couple of EP's for movies when there wasn't enough songs for a full LP, but they didn't sell that well (not to mention the quality of the songs themselves).  (NOTE: EP's were Tickle Me in 1965 and Easy Come, Easy Go in 1967).

I really hope he adds a show in Southern New England. Beverly MA and New York are too far for me. Anyway, can't wait to hear what the first show's going to be like because we're only 4 days away.

Ok...I just listened very quickly...don't know what mix it is but it's the default one on Spotify.

Carl on chorus lead except Dennis ("tell me, tell me") EXCEPT Carl might sing that one line the first time it is sung in the first chorus.

I'll check my 60's-era LP tomorrow and check in with what that sounds like.

Hate to break it to you but there's an accordion on Strange World.

The last time any synthesizers were used was probably SIP or maybe Stars and Stripes.

I would have to guess some form of synthesizer is somewhere on TWGMTR. Unless it's truly all acoustic piano, some of the keys on the album would presumably come from some sort of electronic piano/synthesizer.

Certainly, if we include solo material there are synths/electric piano on various tracks.

I guess it has been awhile since we got a sort of "DX7" type of 80s synth sound. The last instance of that may be something like Al's "Don't Fight the Sea" (a BB track in all but name), though in that case the synths may actually come from the vintage 1989 sessions for the song.

I think the keyboards on "Daybreak Over The Ocean" are probably the only synths on that album - and they may not be synths in the '80s sense of the word (meaning, digitally created soundwaves), but rather sounds digitally sampled from real instruments.

Are we defining synths in the 80's sense of the word? That's what I was doing. I was guessing modern keyboards would be different from the 70's/80's synthesizers like Moogs and Yamahas.

I think a Dano was used on Pet Sounds

461  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: '70s Beach Boys Songs Brian Didn't Sing On on: December 27, 2017, 09:13:03 AM

Lineup for "Da Doo Ron Ron" would appear to be as follows (based on a comparison of the AFM session contract and the actual track sheet annotations):
Ed Carter and Bill House - guitars
Jerry Scheff - bass
Gary Mallaber - drums
Brian - tack piano
Bruce - Fender Rhodes
Mike Meros - Moog, additional tack piano
Carl - lead vocals
"Group" (probably Brian, Carl, Mike, Al, and Bruce) - background vocals

I'm curious how piecemeal the sessions were for the various KTSA songs. I would imagine the AFM sheets would tell us, but I'm curious when names that aren't on the album liner notes pop up for other outtake sessions, like Jerry Scheff in this case. It's probably just a case of Bruce hiring out for the session and grabbing who he could.

Seeing the name Bill House reminded me that he's the same guy (presumably) that co-wrote "Make It Big" several years later. Anybody familiar with how he came into their orb? Did he have an extended relationship with someone (maybe Melcher?), or is there any chance "Make It Big" was written far earlier than 1987?

Bill House is on other KTSA tracks, and is listed as Associate Producer for "Rock And Roll To The Rescue" - and he also played (uncredited) on the L.A. (Light) version of "Sumahama", so I'd say he definitely traveled in the Johnston/Melcher orbit. That last song brings up a point you referenced - names on AFM contracts that aren't on album liner credits. None of the musicians who played on "Sumahama", except Joel Peskin, are listed in the credits for that album - nor are other notables such as Lyle Ritz, who overdubbed string bass on "Goin' South". Lyle also plays on the KTSA version of "Santa Ana Winds" - as does harmonica player Tommy Morgan - but neither names show up in that album's list of contributors. As for Jerry Scheff - he played on a few of the KTSA sessions, including the one for "Oh Darlin'", so he's presumably on that one, even though his name isn't in the credits. More likely than not, these were mere oversights (or, in the case of "Sumahama", a temporarily misplaced AFM sheet).

EDIT: to answer your main point - judging by the AFM documentation, I wouldn't say the KTSA sessions weren't "piecemeal" at all - but rather, a group of musicians was hired and played on several dates before one or two of them were replaced by other players for the next round of sessions, etc. etc. Thus, to use a football analogy, Gary Mallaber was the "staring Quarterback" on drums, but Ricky Fataar soon replaced him for several sessions, before Scott Matthews replaced him...then Mallaber came back for one last session toward the end. Based, I'm sure, on a particular musician's availability at the time, rather than a playing-related injury or a drop on the scoreboard!  Smiley

Really interested about Jerry Scheff because I'm a big Elvis fan (for those who don't know, Jerry Scheff was Elvis' bassist on the road and a little in the studio from 1969 through most of the 1970's). Were these his only sessions with The Beach Boys, c-man? And do we know the exact list he played on?

<<Ricky Fataar:
TM Song (recorded while he was in the band but released afterward)
Dick Clark New Year's Eve performance recorded between September and November 1974
Keepin' The Summer Alive (1980)
Sunshine (1980)>>

Not sure about Ricky's appearance on that first one...sure, a version may have been recorded while he was in the band, but the credits on the released version don't mention him..."It's OK", however, does feature Ricky's drumming, presumably from his tenure in '74...

Thanks c-man.  Confused the two of them because I didn't have the album or Wikipedia at hand when I was typing that. Will edit that later.
463  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Forgotten Contributions or Contributions after They Left: on: December 23, 2017, 02:49:23 PM
Hi everyone, have there been any list of when members have contributed to a Beach Boys song or maybe even a concert after they left the group?

I know David Marks was on Little Saint Nick, some songs from Shut Down Vol II, and maybe Don't Worry Baby.

Bruce was on occasional backing vocals and piano on Holland, 15 Big Ones, and Love You.

Blondie doesn't have any as far as I know except through the unreleased tracks on Made In California.

Ricky was on some songs on 15 Big Ones and KTSA.

Does anyone know any particular songs?

Shows:
Ricky appeared on the Dave Clark 1974 NYE show that wasn't actually taped on NYE.

David Marks appeared in Boston in 1971 around the time Mike asked him to rejoin as a bassist and for the Baywatch appearance when Carl couldn't make it.

Bruce appeared at a couple of shows in around 1973 and 1974.

Anything else?

List:

David Marks:
Little Saint Nick? (single version) (1963)
Don't Worry Baby? (1963)
some songs from Shut Down Vol II
Surfer Girl — live in Boston 1971
occasional performances live in the 1980's and 1990's
Baywatch Apparance live 1995

Bruce Johnston:
California Saga: California (1973)
occasional shows during 1973/1974
Blueberry Hill (1976 — backing vocals and piano)
I'll Bet He's Nice (1977)

Blondie Chaplin:
Sail On Sailor — live at one show in the 1990's

Ricky Fataar:
It's OK (recorded while he was in the band but released afterward)
Dick Clark New Year's Eve performance recorded between September and November 1974
Just Once In My Life (1976?) — percussion
Keepin' The Summer Alive (1980)
Sunshine (1980)

After 1998 — the touring band:

Al Jardine:
February 2011 "Reagan" show
April 2012 private show

David Marks:
2008 UK tour
2014 Jones Beach CA
2015 London and some other shows

This thread is very informative. Maybe one should be done on the lineup history of  the Brian Wilson Band.

Here is what I can gather of Brian's touring lineup.

Joe Thomas - Keyboards, Backing Vocals (1999)
Jeff Foskett - Rhythm Guitar, Lead and Backing Vocals (1999-2013)
Paul Von Mertens - Saxophone, Harmonica, Woodwinds, Backing Vocals (1999-Present)
Probyn Gregory - Horns, Guitar, Backing Vocals (1999-Present)
Nicky Wonder (aka Nick Walusko) - Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals (1999-Present)
Darian Sahanaja - Keyboards, Vibes, Lead and Backing Vocals (1999-Present)
Scott Bennett - Keyboards, Vibes, Lead and Backing Vocals (1999-2015)
Bob Lizik - Bass Guitar (1999-2008, 2013-Present)
Taylor Mills - Backing Vocals (1999-2011)
Mike D'Amico - Percussion, Guitar and Backing Vocals (1999-2001, 2002-2004), Drums (2008-Present)
Todd Sucherman - Drums (1999)
Jim Hines - Drums (1999-2008)
Andy Paley - Percussion, Keyboards, Backing Vocals (2001-2002)
Nelson Bragg - Percussion and Backing Vocals (2004-Present)
Brett Simons - Bass (2008-2011)
Gary Griffin - Keyboards, Vibes, Backing Vocals (filling in for either Darian or Scott when absent in 2006-2008, permanently replaced Scott 2016-Present)
Billy Hinsche - Keyboards, Vibes, Backing Vocals (filling in for Darian when absent in 2007 and 2016-2017)
Al Jardine - Lead and Backing Vocals, Guitar (guest appearances in 2006-2007), (2013-Present)
David Marks - Lead and Backing Vocals, Guitar (2013)
Blondie Chaplin - Lead and Backing Vocals, Guitar (occasional guest appearances in 2013), (2015-Present)
Brian Eichenberger - Lead and Backing Vocals, Rhythm Guitar (2014)
Matt Jardine - Lead and Backing Vocals, Rhythm Guitar (2015-Present)

There's also Steve Dahl who was in and out along with Joe Thomas in 1999.

I would also say, if we're including temporary fill-ins like Billy Hinsche, we can also include Debbie Shair who has been a fill-in in 2016/2017.

Also, while it's mostly just semantics, I would say that Al, Blondie, and Dave have always been billed as "Special Guests" as opposed to being a "touring band" member. Blondie in particular falls into this category as he isn't on stage for the entire length of the show.

I think there's another touring keyboardist too that served as a substitute for at least Brian's 2017 New Bedford show. I didn't hear them mention Darian or Billy Hinsche or Gary Griffin, I remember he was from MA but don't remember anything else unfortunately.

Thanks SMiLE.  It wouldn't have been possible without all the members who gave me what info they could.

If there's enough interest for one on the Brian Wilson Band, I'd consider starting one.

Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road
Bruce Springsteen - You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)
Elvis Presley - I Gotta Know
Elvis Presley - Frankfort Special (Scotty Moore's guitar solo)
Bee Gees - Road to Alaska

Fell out of my chair just now trying to buy Eagles tix in Saint Louis. The cheapest seats in lousy sections are $287. Then add the massive extra fees attached. Just for fun I tried to get seats front and center row 11. They were $2,300!  Wonder what they will charge for the meet and greet? How many sold out Mike and Bruce shows would they have to do to equal what the Eagles make in one night?

Even worse in Boston. Over $3000 for front row seats

Sorry if this has been posted before (I read most of the thread but might have missed something).  Will this ever be released in CD format?  And if not, does anyone know if you can copy it onto a blank CD or is it protected?  I don't want to make copies for friends or anything, I just still like to have actual CDs that I can play on my stereo.  I am technologically impaired.

And THANK YOU to the people who got this to happen.

It's digital-only, as most of the "Copyright Extension" sets since 2013 have been.

You can take the downloaded tracks and burn a CD, yes. You can do that in iTunes, and surely many other programs as well. Having you own backup physical copy makes total sense.

Hey Jude or anyone else, is there any way to burn a disc from Spotify Premium or Amazon's music library?

Found some interesting shots that document various lineups on the "Rock in Houston" website, which apparently documents Houston tour stops for various bands.

Here's the February 12, 1981 show at The Summit, one of the hand full of early 1981 shows Carl did prior to his departure. You can see it's still of course the "1980 lineup" on stage:

Here's a May 14, 1990 show at The Summit. Foskett is still there. All four core BBs are there. Looks like Matt Jardine is also up on stage behind Foskett:

This is June 8, 1997 at The Woodlands Pavilion (don't let the weird late 80s style back drop fool you!). Carl is present (and, in my opinion, looking in pretty good shape compared to the scant other 1997 tour pics that are out there), and Tim Bonhomme and Chris Farmer are there (no Phil Bardowell yet as far as I can tell):

A few more of Carl from that '97 gig. Again, all things considered, he's looking pretty good I think:

I am guessing Carl is wearing a wig in those photos - the hair seems shaggier on top. But looking pretty good overall.
I feel like crying everytime I think about 1997.  Cry

I know I haven't commented in a while but thanks again to Mr. Stebbins, Hey Jude, and c-man for their help with expanding this topic, which I will edit later (it's 12:35 AM where I am).  That's the first time I've seen 1997 photos and I love all of the photos that Hey Jude was able to find and post here
470  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys Touring Lineups on: November 28, 2017, 09:21:38 AM
I think we could add that David Marks was part of the Beach Boys touring group for their entire 2008 UK tour.

Mr. Stebbins, between 1999 (when David stopped touring with the Beach Boys) and 2008, did he say he was a member of the group?  I don't have your book (and am eagerly waiting the second edition).  Some articles say his departure from the touring band meant he left the band completely in 1999, but I wasn't sure if it was that he was a member but didn't tour (like Brian and Al, though those stories are different).

For any other members, I thought I read that David Marks was not originally going to be part of C50.  Was there a reason?  Was Mike actually the one who advocated for him?
471  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Humming Beach Boys lyrics over other songs on: November 28, 2017, 09:14:47 AM
They're both Beach Boys songs but sometimes I combine these two or sing one over the other: Little Honda and All I want to Do

That's pretty cool - which of those songs are you singing over the other? And what part(s) specifically?

I always sing "Faster, it's all right" from Little Honda at the end of the chorus of All I Want to Do.  Don't remember the part, I'll listen to it later and edit this post.

EDIT: Near the end of the chorus right before Mike's last line.
472  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al being fired on: November 28, 2017, 09:12:56 AM
Does Al always complain/always quickly angered? Slightly off-topic, but he seemed pretty angry at a recent concert of his and Brian's when I asked him to sign my copy of Pet Sounds ("I can't sign anything" in a harsh voice).

Thanks!

While there are stories of just about every BB having a bad day/moment and being weird or cranky (or, in the case of your story, probably just a little rushed/tired, etc.), Al (along with Mike, and Dave, and Brian) is usually excellent with fans.

As we've often discussed, the only BB with a regular pattern of running hot and cold with fans is Bruce.

Thanks Hey Jude and everyone else; there's too many to quote.  It was the first time I'd met a member of the band so I didn't know what to expect and was kind of disappointed.
473  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Christmas albums that are also really good music on: November 28, 2017, 07:29:21 AM
Presley's first one is really good. The second is ok, except for the fabulous "Merry Christmas, baby".
Harry Belafonte cut a very interesting one in the late 50s iirc.
Also Johnny Cash's first Christmas album is nice.
Of course Dean Martin's Christmas recordings are great.

And apart from the Beach Boys, don't forget Brian's christmas album which imo has some very good performances on it.

Many Elvis fans don't like it, so I guess I'm in a minority of Elvis fans, but I love his version of Winter Wonderland, especially the typical Elvis ending...ba ba ba ba I said a-walkin' in a WINTER wonderland (cue James Burton's awesome guitar).
