Re "Please Let Me Wonder" clip... Brian suggests that it's him saying "I love you" at the end.  Hmmm... always sounded like Carl to me.  ??

Agreed. I was confused when I heard that too. It would make more sense for Brian to do it because it’s his lead vocal, but it sounds a lot like Carl. But then again, how many times did the members of this band emulate the others’ voices? A lot, right?
277  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Kokomo: Robbie Robertson Went There First? on: April 02, 2020, 08:12:37 PM
FWIW, one wonders if Chuck really held a grudge or just happened to be in a bad mood on the occasions when Brian and David approached him.  Carl once said that Chuck told him that he loved Surfin' U.S.A.  And why wouldn't he?  After all, Chuck actually made a fortune on Surfin' U.S.A.  Though imprisoned when the song came out, his management threatened Murry with a lawsuit, and Murry responded by assigning 100% ownership of the publishing to Chuck's Arc Music.

I thought he was okay with it, but it was the publishers who were pissed (I’ll have to dig out my copy of the Brown Eyed Handome Man bio). Doesn’t a Chuck Berry live album either feature him mentioned, in the intro or on the cover, as writing/co-writing Surfin’ USA?

So are Carl, Dennis, and David Marks still on the final BB version, or is it just session musicians?  If so, is this the first BB song that Carl isn't on (I thought it would have been WDFFIL)
279  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Maureen Love Information? on: March 24, 2020, 02:04:54 PM
Was Maureen the first female musician to play on a BBs session?
Audree sang on earlier non BBs demos, but I think Maureen's harp predates Carol's bass.

Well, Carol Kaye played guitar on the BW-Bob Norberg version of "Back Home", cut June 14. That predates Maureen's harp performance on "Catch A Wave" by exactly one month ("In My Room" was tracked two days later), although technically it's not a "Beach Boys" session.

Very interesting. Is Maureen the only sibling of a BBs band member to play on any material by this band?

Mike has many siblings, but not sure any of them ever made any other cameos on any song.
And I can't think of any cameos by siblings of any of the other members either.

Well, Brian, Carl, and Dennis each had two siblings that played and sang on a bunch of the records.  Wink LOL

A copy of this is sitting somewhere in my collection:

https://www.discogs.com/Maureen-Love-Maureen-Love/release/5298707

I had no idea this existed.

Is this song "Add Some Love To Your Day" a cover of "Add Some Music To Your Day"?

And if so, does this mean that she is the forerunner in the Love family of making Love name puns in song titles?

I think definitely with the puns.
280  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who is this guy on the far left? on: March 22, 2020, 10:13:27 AM
I don't remember the guy's name, but in the '90s they had a guitar tech who played a solo on one tour. This photo looks earlier, it could be a guest from the opening act.

Stanley T. Sitchell, I believe.

In other news, is the roadie/opening act guest holding a Fender Electric XII?

Hey all - if you are using this time of lockdown to learn how to play stuff on guitar, consider my humble thoughts on how to play the Introduction to Wouldn't it be Nice on guitar.

283  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys 2020 Tour Thread on: March 15, 2020, 02:06:56 PM
Been doing research on M&B's March and April tour dates that have been impacted by coronovirus cancellations and found the following results.
...
And a question mark:
April 1 -- New Bedford, MA (Zeiterion Performing Arts Center)
Theater closed through March 31. Still on?

Good question, which I have to look into, because I was supposed to attend this show with two family members.
284  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Good Vibes Only Dramedy w. The Beach Boys Music From John Stamos In Works At HBO on: March 14, 2020, 05:49:05 PM
I appreciate that Stamos is a big fan of the band, and I think he means well. That said, I still think his ongoing association with the band just makes people associate the brand with cornball lameness, because Stamos has pretty much only done lame, cornball content as an actor. (I admit to watching and liking Full House when I was a kid).

Whoever made the comparison to if The Rolling Stones kept endlessly associating the brand with David Hasselhoff was a great analogy.

I hope this doesn't suck.

I'm still completely baffled why Mike & Bruce didn't appear as "The Beach Boys" on Fuller House. That cornball fluff seems like the perfect vehicle for M&B. There must be a reason, but I sure don't know it.

1. Not everything Stamos has done has been cornball. Does no one remember that he did 3 seasons on ER? Call me crazy, but I still think he has a “Travolta In Pulp Fiction” in him somewhere.

2. Fuller House focuses on Candace Cameron’s, Jodie Sweetin’s, and Andrea Barber’s characters.  The Beach Boys weren’t from their generation (Fuller House’s equivalent to what the BB were to Full House? New Kids On The Block).

Yeah but Candace Cameron’s character won the tickets to see the BB in Full House?  Wink
285  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian to tour UK on: March 12, 2020, 12:11:27 PM
Reunion aside, the band has never really been one whose members turn up at others gigs and jam, with the exception of David Marks.
I’d be surprised if it happened with Brian, Mike, Al and Bruce this late in the game.

Has David Marks appeared at any B&A or M&B shows after 2015? And did we ever get an explanation why David didn’t stay with Brian and Al; I’m assuming so he could remain neutral and on okay terms with Mike for 2014 at Jones Beach and the Ella Awards and 2015 in the UK.
286  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson 2020 Live Thread on: March 10, 2020, 01:31:06 PM
I hate to bring back up the “Brian shouldn’t be on tour” thing and I’m not saying Brian should/shouldn’t be on tour. I know that some people said Al was talk-singing his way from the PS set. What I am asking is if Al is getting bored of the tour routine and/or is losing some of his range (“Help Me Rhonda” and “Sloop John B” in particular).

287  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: March 08, 2020, 04:00:59 PM
So did Mike for "Made in California" I believe ("Going to the beach"). But I agree with you guys.

They (Al?) updated Loop De Loop for Endless Harmony too as I recall.

Yes, Al.

Why did Mike have Scott Totten overdub “Goin’ to the Beach.” This may be a stupid comparison I could fix from carefully A/B’ing the two versions, but  the solo is Scott Totten and not Carl, correct? (sadly)
288  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mark Linett interview with multitracks on Produce Like A Pro Youtube Channel on: February 29, 2020, 08:26:30 AM
Perhaps slightly off topic, but does Sun Records still exist?

Yes, both the label and the studio still exist, but they are separate companies. The label mostly focuses on reissues and the occasional new artist, while the studio mostly focuses on tours during the day and sessions during the night.
289  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / The Dave Clark Five on: February 27, 2020, 10:39:02 AM
Any love for the DC5 over here?  Since the group vanished from the airwaves after the '80's or so (and I was born after that), I discovered the band from the 2014 PBS documentary.  I had to import a 2008 UK compilation into the US to listen to the band's music if I didn't have access to YouTube.  Now, Dave Clark finally (and way too late, but I guess(?) better late than never, re-released that comp* and plans to follow with the entire catalogue.  Let's start with "Glad All Over:"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yvmaurvf98

*though I've heard the US version only has half of the tracks the UK version does, so I guess if the vinyl also follows that logic, I'll have to import again.

Does anyone know where I can find some actual research on the band's history, besides UK session drummer Bobby Graham's out-of-print autobiography?  I'd love to see how much Graham actually drummed on.

Thanks to everyone's favorite, Elora (if she's reading this, I've been able to listen to so many cool and unexpected (like the "i" compilation) things that you've posted, thank you), we have some good quality footage of this era, for those (me) who haven't seen it that much.  Prior to "Surfer Girl" is when I was like oh God that's Carl.  Hell, Dennis seems to be fairly okay at least speaking wise, somewhat near his Knebworth speaking voice.

This debacle of playing that gig made international news and was picked up by even the network news divisions and late night comedy shows...Easily the worst PR this band has received since the end of C50 in 2012. It wouldn't be unexpected if some of it rubs off regarding bookings and demand.

Isn't it probably one of the few news stories the band has had since C50 sadly?

293  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: ATTENTION ALL VINYL LP COLLECTORS !! on: February 09, 2020, 08:32:07 AM
So I guess this the end of the vinyl revival?
It doesn't worry me; I have nearly everything I ever thought of as a MUST HAVE on vinyl. These days, I mostly buy 45's, random cheap albums at thrift stores; and cd's.
But this story, along with the revelation in the last year or so of the massive fire at ...help me...UMG?...that destroyed thousands of master tapes...yeah, we are finding out just how temporary our musical history is.
Will anyone still be listening to the Beach Boys in 2060? The Beatles? Elvis?

Well I’ll be around then, so I will.

But yes, I’m getting pretty worried about this. Mr. Desper, is there any way that they could rebuild or do they not get much profit from their part of vinyl production?

<<Any evidence that Carol is on bass other than her saying so?>>

Well, she mentioned that track as the first time she played bass on a BBs session (which of course, it wasn't, but perhaps it was their first hit single on which she played bass), and that was in a 1983 Guitar Player magazine article IIRC (I have the actual magazine somewhere, but I'd have to dig for it). This was a cover story on "women who rock" or something similar. This was a good decade or more before her memories of such things began to be called into question, so that may give it some weight.

A few years back I encountered an online article where Don Randi recalled certain details of the "Rhonda" tracking session, in particular some details about the Universal/Radio Recorders studio where they recorded that. From this, I learned that the track was cut not at the main Radio Recorders location on 7000 Santa Monica Boulevard, nor around the corner at the famous "annex" facility, but rather at the studio's recently-acquired Sunset Highland Division at 1441 North McCadden Place  - soon to be known as "TTG Studio" (for "Two Terrible Guys"). For some reason, I can't locate that online article now, and I don't remember if he said anything about the personnel on the session - if so, it wasn't anything that I didn't already know from other sources, so I'm not sure if he specifically mentioned Carol's participation or not. But, maybe someone else can find that article and see!  Smiley

I doubt this is what you read, Mr. Slowinski, but this is all I could find for Don Randi's recollections.

296  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How many corporate/private gigs have The BBs/ Brian done in their careers? on: February 03, 2020, 09:06:27 PM
Someone needs to tell the organizer of this online petition that Elliott Lott isn't the Manager of the band nor President of BRI, and hasn't been for some years.

https://www.change.org/p/beach-boys-stop-supporting-trophy-hunting

Jerry Schilling is still the president of BRI as far as I know. I don't know if they have anyone working for BRI who actually has the title of "Manager." The individual members (well, at least Brian and Mike) have their own personal managers.

I also wish the petition delineated between Mike's "Beach Boys" and the band/corporation as a whole. I'm not really particularly for a boycott of the band's back catalog of music. The boycott should be of Mike's touring band, and Mike's solo material.

If I’m right I mentioned that in my comment when I posted, at least about Lott. I can’t remember if I mentioned Jerry Schilling.
297  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: More power to the on: January 30, 2020, 09:22:54 PM
A side effect of Joe Public not knowing what the Beach Boys look like ("Something to do with stripey shirts? A surfboard? Hawaiian shirts?").

"No one knew who Elvis's drummer was, but everyone knew Ringo." The same could be said for the Beach Boys, but every member.

And I think you'll find that a good many members of Jo(e) Public are indeed aware of the existence of Brian Wilson! (But perhaps not that of B.J. Fontana.)

D.J. Fontana.

And my donation to the Power Mower should arrive tomorrow.
298  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson 2020 Live Thread on: January 27, 2020, 06:54:56 PM
Brian and co. apparently played at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT last Thursday night (1/23).  However, I live 45 minutes from that venue and had no idea that the concert took place.  Any chance that it was a private concert of some sort?

Someone commented in the Brian Wilson Tour FB group that it was a private show.  Too bad though because it was somewhat close to me.
299  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: December 30, 2019, 08:00:53 AM
Amen. I literally quit listening to my Sunflowef/Surf's Up twofer after hearing the version in his study video. There just didn't seem to be a point to hearing it in any other way.
Can I find this anywhere online?

No, sadly. He pulled them down awhile ago after fears that BRI would shut it down...I don’t really know how to summarize it...someone else can probably jump in and fill in the details. I really only heard his mix of “Vegetables” because I never had the time to sit down and go through all of his mixes.
300  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Merry Christmas; what the heck is this guitar? on: December 28, 2019, 08:13:55 AM
Also, going with the 3 prototypes scenario. The one Roberts is playing could be the first, as it looks butt ugly and a clunker. The one up for auction is more ‘streamlined ‘ for want of a better term, so a latter of the three. Both guitars have no manufacturer name anywhere I can see.
At the very least, who better to give a prototype to than some of the best studio musicians of the day to test and critique?

Nice Work!!!!!!!!

But I think Ho-Rob's version looks way better than the Milwaukee prototype!

What a weird guitar.  But there he is using it on a session, along with a Hammond Chord Organ.  The next thing to solve is what the heck session that was!!!!

Thanks for your great detective work!!!!!

Could we hear the BB connections now please?  Wink
