also pick up Doris Troy's album on Apple ...both Ringo and George play on it and Billy Preston and George play on her version of Get Back . it's a pretty good album.

these kids actually did a pretty good job singing the Standards. Who really sucked in this format was Rod the Mod!!!
Jesus he is butchering some of the greatest songs ever written !

American idol sucked last night !!!..those Queen song's are hard for anyone to sing except Freddie Mercury. It was not the best band to have on this show. Brian may also told that Ace kid that he wouldn't change the arrangement for "We will rock you"....May really seemed pissed/ offended that the kid wanted to change it up.
The show really should stick to the Manilow type singer/arranger for these show's ...someone a lot more sympathetic to the singer.
I wonder if Prince will appear , they have approached him.
12  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Ray Davies - "Other People's Lives" on: April 12, 2006, 07:02:25 AM
I heard an interview with Mr. Davies...he insists it is pronounced like Davis on ly with a z (da'viz) on public radio the other day.  Just listening to him talk makes me want to hear the new record.

I don't have enough kinks records. A couple of early and a couple of later seventies (misfits etc) Problem is they were quite prolific and idiosyncratic and I wouldn't know where to start catching up at this point.

What are five essential albums or compilations?
Funny that you mention this , because on the BBC recordings the announcer introduces Dave as Dave Davis .
13  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Ray Davies - "Other People's Lives" on: April 12, 2006, 07:00:36 AM
For starters i would get the Village green 3 disc set , lately i have been playing disc 2 which is Mono and sounds fantastic.
also the third disc has a lot of songs from the same period that were considered at one point for the project. The Liner notes
are also very informative . a MUST BUY !!!

I bought this cd  the day after i saw Ray in Boston last week , and it's still in the cd player !!!! great record , it's a real grower
fave tracks are
Over my head
the Tourist
Other peoples lives
creatures of little faith

i'm telling ya  the cd is so good my fave 's off the record change every 3 days. this may be better than Macca's chaos and creation. His songwriting makes him seem like a REAL person !!...not a superstar making an album.
anyone else get this yet Huh

My Mom and Dad bought it and they felt ripped off.....they thought it was Johnny Cash and June singing when they purchased the cd , not the actors.

23  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Day jobs on: March 09, 2006, 06:02:43 AM
well not really ...in the recent issue of wax poetics there is a picture of jazz great Donald Byrd  as a street cleaner in NYC ? Unbelievable !!
also members of Kiss had jobs ...i think Paul Stanley was a taxi cab driver and Simmons taught school.
24  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Blue Note on: March 08, 2006, 09:50:38 AM
here is a great session , everyone should own Turning Point by Organist Lonnie Smith this was originally released in 69 on blue note ( just remastered as a RVG ) great version of eleanor rigby....Melvin Sparks and Idris Muhammad lay down unshakeable grooves on this album, freeing Smith and his horn soloists Lee Morgan, Bennie Maupin and Julian Priester to deliver inspired, often challenging solos. A unique and powerful album in Lonnie's discography.
