76  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Rolling Stones Live on: February 09, 2006, 11:40:07 AM
Yeah, I wondered why Jagger sounded like he was forgetting words during that performance.  It wasn't that bad, just a crappy mix.   Also it being set up like that in the open air with Richards leaning down towards the monitors a bit obviously showed they couldn't hear themselves much.

It's rather unfair to say THEY sucked when the whole thing was non-condusive to any real band to come out and jam.  Seemed to me like a shaky deal from the start and the Stones pulled it off with what they could.

As for them live, they're not a bad band.

By the way, last time Keith did lead vox for the Stones was during the Steel Wheelchairs Tour in 1989 when he sang "Can't Be Seen", which isn't that bad of a song.   It's got some nice little airy riffs to the song during the background vocal parts.   You can find the live version on their 1991 release "Flashpoint", which is just another live release from the Stones to keep up with their live catalog since Ya-Yas.
77  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: can anyone describe spector's music? on: February 09, 2006, 11:33:52 AM
Does that LONDON 45 have Unchained Melody and Ebb Tide on it?   I have that one; it was my mom's and she bought it when U.M. came out.

I've always wondered why it showed up on London and not Philles.  Hmm.  Oh well.

I describe Spector's music as "echo soup", which Jon Hunt described it to me in 1999 or so.  I can't think of a better description.
78  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Grammy thread on: February 09, 2006, 11:26:09 AM
The Grammies are nothing more but recording industry pap.

Green Day did make a statement with their American Idiot and I think it's a fine album.  But let's be honest here...Macca got chosen, just like The Stones got chosen to do the Incompetant Referee Festival (aka Super Bowl XL), for the same reasons.  There AREN'T ANY groups that can cover a whole lot of audiences anymore.

Mariah Carey is nothing but a psychotic windbag of vocal acrobatics and a pet of the biggest sleazeballs ever who reside in the recording industry.  She's a sleazeball herself who used to sleep with anyone and anything to make her famous. If you've done anything in the recording industry, you'd know that her genre is full of more sleaze (as Dave Gilmour calls them "complete dickheads") full of idiots that deserve nothing less than dying in a big tour bus fire.

They have destroyed our music, they've screwed the public and whenever they have a grievance, they put penalties on it that compete with someone who killed somebody towards us, the listening public for "copying" and whatever crybaby garbage that Lars Ulrich and his lemmings throw out there.

They slam us to the hilt with commercials, crap products and a very unpredictable industry all catered to the generation behind mine which is full of a bunch of whiny, timed-out, raised on cell phones and credit cards idiots who don't know their asses from a hole in the ground.

So am I not shocked at the choosings and the disregard of some good young talents.

Warner, Atlantic, Sony and Uni should all have their headquarters burned to the mother f****ing ground.  And if people like the B.W. camp defend these idiots, then the hell with them too.

Sick and tired of this nonsense.  I download my butt off and the last four CDs I bought were American Idiot, SMiLE, Saving For Silverman and Hot Fuss.   The RIAA and their lemmings deserve the loss of profits and a tumor the size of a basketball in their backside cavities.

That's right, I said it.

Screw the Grammies, screw the Billboard Awards and anyone that tries to mimic the two.

WHEW!  That was fun to rant.  It's been a while since I've been here.  Smiley

What in God's name is Macca doing with this Lexus and Fidelity Investment pap?

That was one of his big appeals...never messing around with corporate garbage.

That's one thing Yoko The Space Cadet has on him there.
81  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Underated albums on: January 27, 2006, 12:17:22 PM
Absolutely!!!!! I always thought it was his sound on the kit that put them through.  Solid and ballsy.  There's even a slice of funk on it - I likes it dirty.  Ringo was/is a GREAT drummer.  So too was Nick Mason, juicy sense of swing.  You GOTTA have that swing, ladies.  Nick and Ringo, both are two truely underrated foundations.

Sadly Yorick, you'll find that level of snobbery all over the "institutes of higher learning."  But that's alright.  That's what makes them stink...and the goods ones raw!  :D  Learn what'cho can and get the F out!!

Nick Mason prior to Dark Side Of The Moon was a killer drummer.  Lots of fills, cymbal hits, great energy, etc.

Soon as DSOTM came out...it's been really nothing but ride-ride-ride-TAP-ride-ride-ride-TAP

Rock stars and their kids.

Will never figure either of them out.
83  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How will Brian handle his kids when they are teenagers? on: January 27, 2006, 12:01:42 PM
If Brian yelled at me I wouldn't even want to play with a beach ball anymore.. I'd be too sad.

Don't be such a Blueboarder.

Singers think they can yell at their audience in case they get distracted.

But a bunch of kids get bashed up in a pit, oh no big deal.  It's only them getting distracted, not you.

Stop buying their tickets...that'll will make them be more focused.

As for Brian's daughters...hmm, interesting theory, but then again, I personally could care less.

Most guys know that teenage girls who come from well off backgrounds and have been "programmed" as you say, start putting out like no other around 14 or so.

I came from a very well-to-do neighborhood, full of private schools - all this "child care" stuff - and I gotta tell you...I had a FUN teenage life with those rich girls.  Show creativity and some dimension to your personality...they're like butter!  (Just like buttah!)

That would give ol' Brian a nice blast in the ticker knowing that.  His daughters were rather wild ones.   Sure, they didn't have their father around, but you don't need dad there or not to keep a rich girl from creative backgrounds to start sowing her oats early.

That whole "father was/wasn't around" truly shows it's benefits, or lack thereof, in someone's 20's.   Varies on person to person, but generally speaking, that's the basically the rule of thumb...and from what I've seen, is very true.

I'm serious!
84  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Neil Young on: January 24, 2006, 08:13:23 PM
Shakey rocks.  Just when you've got him pinned down, he does the unexpected.   Seems like a very caring person with balls big as churchbells.

I figure people like him know the real deal of good hearted people versus people who act nice for the sake of social harmony.

His music isn't ALWAYS real interesting, but him always being unpredictable adds to his charm, intensity and integrity.

He also stands up for what he believes in and has no reservations about putting cockswinging swagger cowboy wannabes in their rightful places.
85  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Definitive Psychedelic Albums on: January 24, 2006, 07:47:25 PM
Or Yes to Steely Dan.  Why would you listen to the Eagles?

 Grin Grin Grin Cry

Hahahaha.  Good call.  I'd never listen to that bland castor-oil-taste-sound of a band.  I hear that and I think of groups of socially inept idiots who drink nothing but Budweiser.

And Jeff Baxter is a blazing guitarist...big ego self-serious exaggerator, but an excellent axeman.
86  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: White Album and acid burn out on: January 24, 2006, 07:46:14 PM
Leave it to Bubba Ho Tep to post what I want to say before I ever get a chance to come to the board and see what's up with everyone!  Gotta respect the man.  Always says the truth and doesn't let hero-worship cloud what he hears.

EXACTLY right about Lennon.   Anything Lennon post Abbey Road is just weak sounding compared to his work with the Beatles in their 65-69 phase...and yes, right around the White Album it was like hearing a great knack starting to wither away due to outside pressures, but mostly his own personal bulls**t that anyone with half a brain would have avoided completely.   Lennon...great songwriter, self indulgent irresponsible jerk.
87  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Definitive Psychedelic Albums on: January 24, 2006, 07:40:00 PM
Where's your HEAD at?

PROCOL HARUM'S FIRST ALBUM!  Kaleidescope, Whiter Shade Of Pale, Repent Walpurgis.

Trower's work on there sounds like the building blocks of David Gilmour's signature wonderful guitar sound.

Monkees - PAC&J

Whatever The Small Faces "Itchycoo Park" was on.   That song PURE psychedelia.

Now Love's Forever Changes?  What is so great about that mediocre thing?   People act like it's like some major stuff when compared to the rest of psychedelic rock, it's like comparing the Eagles to Yes when it comes to musicianship.

88  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Underated albums on: January 24, 2006, 07:31:55 PM
Underated Part 3:

Yes - Tales From The Topographic Oceans.

Now, I know I might catch hell for that one, but it's got some very strong colorful musical moments.  Sure the lyrics are religious-based in a trippy sense, but I really don't pay attention to them.   Musically, it's very strong considering it's length.
89  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE DVD Has Gone Platinum on: January 24, 2006, 07:24:26 PM
Nope, Scorscese has never won an Oscar.   Hopefully he will this time around.  Although it would be nice if Leaf won.

My god...Raging Bull, King Of Comedy, Bring Out The Dead, Taxi Driver...man, so unfair.

Watch Brokebutt Mountain sweep it all up even leaving Walk The Line in the wind.   Nothing gets Oscars more than movies about the disabled and "controversial love" in the past 20 years.
90  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1975 Hits Compilation on: January 24, 2006, 07:20:54 PM
Probably used "45 Version" to make it look like you were getting something you didn't have in the marketing of the box set.

Especially with a Smile era track since there really weren't any compilations that had Smile-era material on it in such an amount as the box set, so they had to milk anything associated with Smile as much as possible - even by spinning the truth on already released tracks on an album.

Saying "Smiley Smile version" to differentiate H&V Pt. 2 or whatever on the set would have just been too honest.
91  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys an american family on: January 24, 2006, 07:15:56 PM
Spector was an ass in the movie?  Can't imagine why since he's been known to be a complete jerk.   Probably the most accurate part in the movie.   Hey, that doesn't mean I don't love Spector's work.

Feel the same way about Matthew Sweet - great master of melodies and writes nice crunchy hooky ditties, but total jerk overall.
92  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Rolling Stone's Axl Rose piece on: January 23, 2006, 07:09:06 AM
Appetite is AWESOME.  Perfect blend of blues and punk with a heavy helping of obsession with the female anatomy.

UYI 1 & 2 are really good as well.  They're not "pisswind".

Spaghetti Incedent...pure garbage...or pisswind.

We're gonna milk that word!

The list of "VIP's at the particular show Axl was interviewing at sounds like Moron Central.   Those people are hot items if you consider yourself trailer trash.

Anything by REM
Most things by Radiohead

You've got that right about Radio head!  I've listened to Kid A and OK Computer a few times...just couldn't see the big hoo-haa about it.

Pablo Honey is good if you want to stab yourself in the neck with a No. 2 pencil.   Only cool thing on it is the guitars.

Only thing I've ever liked from them is "High And Dry" on The Bends.
94  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Falling-asleep music on: January 23, 2006, 07:03:15 AM
Rush - Hemispheres

Why, I don't know.
95  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Weezer's "Make Believe" again on: January 23, 2006, 07:01:55 AM
Weezer's latest sounds very "Blink 182" on their vocals - that white boy suburbia whiny yip-yap vocal production.

Pinkerton's nothing to sneeze at.

It's nice to see them on the mainstream scene again because their first one was a damn fine album; now in Deluxe Edition.  You know you're getting old when there's "Deluxe Editions" of albums of your late teens are coming out.

But something about the vocals on the latest one...just sounds like something you'd see Abercrombie and Fitch wearing kids listening too.  Very milquetoast suburbia sounding.   The music is very good, but the vox just kill it for me.

96  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Underated albums on: January 23, 2006, 06:58:39 AM
Underated:

REM's "Monster" rocked.  Crunchy, loud - pure Peter Buck in his Spector wall-of-sound phase.
Ocean Colour Scene - Mosely Shoals - very 60's influenced
CSNY - 4 Way Street
Seal - IV
Police - Synchronicity (everyone likes "Ghost" and "Zmm bada" or whatever it's called)
RHCP - By The Way

Overrated:

Anything by The Eagles, Dave Matthews & Jimmy Buffett
Nirvana - Nevermind (more of a statement and indicator than an album - In Utero was 100x a better album)
Anything by Sting (minus Blue Turtles)
RHCP - Californication
97  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys an american family on: January 23, 2006, 06:49:21 AM
Summer Dreams was absolutely horrible.

But "American Family" did use original music.  Brian sings a part where his character does the "I Get Around" part in building the song.

Besides the whole "name a bunch of times" I wrote prior in the thread, I forgot how nauseating the guy who played Al was.  He was pure soap-opera school - heavy breaths, melodramatic acting, etc.
98  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys an american family on: January 19, 2006, 07:23:49 AM
Other than Kevin Dunn's performance as Murry, actually being very good, I thought the movie was OK for a beginner fan of the BB's, but that's about it.

Lorne being regarded as "Tommy Schaffer" and no mention of Tony Asher, but Van Dyke being the indirect collaborator on PS.

I thought, overall, it was your typical "made for TV movie based on true facts" - which basically means, the characters say each other's names about 500 times in a 5 minute period in the script.  Ever notice that in the Made For TV movies based on famous people?

You have the Wonder Years Mom saying "Murry, I can't do this Murry" and "Murry, you never showed any appreciation to those boys, Murry!"  and whoever the chick played Marilyn saying "Brian" about nine hundred times.

I just find that whole "say the name a lot of times" very annoying.
99  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson web site down? on: January 19, 2006, 07:13:32 AM
Brian, what do you think about the Iran newk-ler situation?  Maybe you and Van Dyke should write an album.  It might change people's minds and bring whirled peas.   Did you get the fruit basket that I sent from me and Bubba Ho Tep?  I'm sure you did.  Feel free to call me anytime.  I'm going to post my phone number on this board, haha.  Dont anyone else call me but Brian.  1-493-555-1212.  By the way, how are the kids doing?  Can I come over?  In Over My Head is the bestest record ever made and it deserves the Number One spot in every music chart known to the world.

100  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / The Syn - Pre Yes Group w/ Squire in Cleveland on: January 15, 2006, 09:29:16 PM
Well, I got to meet, finally, Chris Squire up close and personal at the R&R Hall Of Fame and at Beachroom Ballroom outside of Cleveland.  Seemed like a nice fellow.  The two other members were one original member from the late 60s where Squire performed with them right before Yes and the other fellow was a younger guitarist who reminded me more of Trevor Rabin more than anything, minus the weedly 80's guitar sound.

The nice extra was Alan White playing drums for the group, but he seemed like a rather sour grapes kind of fellow.  Not too friendly during fan meet/greet.  Almost seemed like he could have cared less.  Seemed like he wanted to get the hell out of dodge.  The Syn's original drummer is on tour with Sheryl Crow where White agreed to sit in and he did a great job.  But man, oh man, I didn't even want to speak to the guy.  He seemed VERY snippy with people.   Oh well...about half of the people in rock music are dyed-in-the-wool pricks anyway.

However, The Syn played a hell of a set at the Beachroom.  No Yes material, but the music was very good.  Squire had his crunchy-dirty bass sound kicking lively, was a very talkative fellow on stage telling about how The Syn opened up for Jimi Hendrix at the Marquee where he was just 17, seeing Lennon, Townshend and Clapton in the audience and almost s**tting his pants.  Which, I could imagine that would be scarey for one of any age at that time, let alone being a teenager.

The singer was very good, definetly not of Anderson's high pitch area.  The songs were not spacey and were very straightforward in their lyrics.   Stuff about war protesting, girls and newer songs about life in their 50's, which was really nice to hear.

If they come to your town, I highly suggest you check them out.  The funny part is, even though they sound not much like Yes - far from it - but if you like Yes, you'll probably like The Syn.

Check them out!

I'll post pictures I took when I find out how to transfer them from my new phone!  It's not as easy as digital camera, unfortunately.
