Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Holy Crap! It works. IT WORKS! Hello all!

Been a real long time since I've posted on here. Ended up over this way by accident, actually, via the Hoffman Forum which somehow went from Foskett's leaving BW's group to somehow tied into the Daro/Bovine thing from a couple years ago. Hmm. Need to check out what's going on in the ways of SMiLE stuff in recent years after an almost-ten year break. Constant work and fatherhood has taken over. At any rate, a big hello to any of the old Shoppers here - John Lane, Bubba-Ho-Tep, Jeff Mason, Jon Hunt and Big Brown Bag that come to mind. I'm sure there are plenty more - greetings to them as well. Rock on!

Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Possibly the "Jasper" reels?

*My apologies if this has been discussed on the board a hundred times already. Sort of lost interest in Smile after BWPS, until this box set resumed my curiosity* I don't know if it was here or at Hunt's Smile Shop, but I distinctly remember a guy named "Jasper" who gloated about either he or a buddy of his finding film cans of the BB's in the studio recording GV, some Smile stuff and bits and pieces that were meant for Inside Pop, but didn't make the cut. He detailed it quite a bit for weeks or months, everyone in the forum got moist, then he disappeared. Sort of wrote him off as another "Bellagio Insider". But, after seeing the Sessions preview and seeing a tiny clip of the guys doing GV, maybe Jasper was the real deal. At 1:50, see what I mean here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ot7vCQisW_4

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Audio Knowlege Lacking here - DSTOM Quad Mix on DVD
|

I figure you guys will steer me in the right direction. Picked up the DSTOM box and it has a original and remastered mixes of the album in Quad. How would I get a true Quad mix out of a DVD onto a 7.1 I don't mess with the 7.1 much; everything's on regular 2 channel stereo, primarily because the remainder of my equipment is 20 years or older...except for the DVD, which is just a simple Sony DVD player where I pull from the 2 channels on that.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Songs stuck in mono

Oddly enough, "Do It Again" was one of the 8 track masters they de-constructed on the Sea of Tunes bootleg series, with all of the various overdubs (new drum track, vocals, etc) highlighted on the bootleg. A true stereo mix would definitely be possible.... if we only had that master tape. It's now missing. Argh.
FYI - the processing on Mike's lead vocal is actually printed to tape on the original four track master that was later transferred to 8 track for further overdubbing, so there was no way to avoid it in the final mixdown of the song without having Mike redo the vocal from scratch. It rather sounds as if they spliced (or "flew") in the words "do it again" to replace "surf again" on the final verse, perhaps copying it from the first verse?
The effect really isn't too distracting, but how buried his vocal sounds has always been sort of distracting. Interesting stories in here - I had no idea. You should have seen the smile shop board around 2000/2001 regarding this stuff. Twenty or more threads with five or more pages each discussing the whole Beach Boys mono/stereo debacles. Seventeen out of that twenty were probably devoted to the Heroes and Villians paradigm alone. Great posts with an immeasurable amount of interesting information, most of which I was never aware of. These guys here are some of the best. Really sparked my interest in different versions of music, plus the Beach Boys stuff in general.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: THE BEACH BOYS PLAY MONTEREY POP

The "Brian pulled the group out" is probably just some working-claim at the time and they've kept up with it since.
In 1967, they could have blamed it on fifty different things and one of them would have easily fit the excuse.
Monterey, I'm sure, is a lot bigger now in memory and footage than it was at the time being just a festival.

Ordered the mono box just to have official complete monos. That's the good stuff there.
Heard the stereos over the weekend from a buddy. Tell you what...the anticipation might make it seem like lobster tails, but the reality is it's a reheated frozen burger at best. Using the 1987's to 24/96...and taking four years to do it was the red flag that did it for me. Not even worth the plastic it's pressed on.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Have We Heard All Pieces Of 1966 Smile?
|
on: September 05, 2006, 09:51:30 AM

Tons of bootlegs. Tons of compilations where you think the material is going to be something you never heard and it just ends up being something you've heard before. Sea Of Tunes. The generosity of collectors during MyPlay in 2000-2001. Not to mention the COUNTLESS sessions of the group dicking around with H&V over 200 times.
My question is, do you think we've heard everything or just about 95% of what was recorded for the 1966 Smile by now?
Or do you think Brian and Co. have some stuff stashed that won't be released until Brian's pushing up daisies?
Unfortunately, we can't go by Brian's word all the time because he gives the same old tired answers that we've heard for years. Even though we love the BWPS DVD's and all that good stuff, most of what seems to be "insight" turns out to be building the 2004 Smile.
I know there's going to be some naysayers that will go into "BlueBoard Mode" while shaking their sedatives in anger while babbling, "Don't we have enough? Brian has shared so much!"
That is true and we are thankful. We have gone to see Brian live many times. We have paid our hard earned money for all official versions put out, repackaged and sold. We're not the kinds of people who just lob "Sounds Of Summer" and "Endless Summer" right next to the stagnent Jimmy Buffett and the milquetoast Eagles.
And like all collectors who love this music, we want to know if we've heard it all or not...which has yet to be answered since NO ONE in the BB camp, even slightly affiliated, either doesn't know or will touch the bootleg topic with a ten foot pole.
