Well done.

However, 'How She Boogalooed It' is awesome.
2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys Wild Honey(Sunshine Tomorrow) 2CD Set? on: July 05, 2017, 05:12:53 AM
Does anybody else think "Untitled (Redwood)" might have been an early take for Time to Get Alone?  Given that the song was intended for Redeood, it makes sense.  I hummed the verse melody over it and it certainly fits.

Hey, I've always thought that. In fact I am surprised by it being titled Untitled (Redwood) on the new release.
Here's a demonstration of how it fits that I just whipped up...

3  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Nashville band Natural Child's BB inspired tune on: November 01, 2016, 05:13:07 AM
One of my favorite bands is this low-down, boogie-woogie, Nashville band Natural Child. Their latest album Okey Dokey has a song called 'Transcendental Meditation' (obviously a big thing in the BB history). Have a listen to the song though, there are definitely elements of 'I Just Got My Pay'. First time I heard the song I noticed the very first line is "Well I'm savin' up my money", which had me thinking "I like spendin' my money, and I like havin' a good time...". Whether you hear it or not, good tune.

Pretty harsh article. Seems like this person had already made up their mind before reading the book.

Very cool interview. The excerpts from the '88 interview with Brian were... classic Brian
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The great lost Dennis Wilson 1965 lead vocal. For what song? on: May 02, 2015, 06:37:42 PM
I can hear Dennis doubling the verses too. It's hard to hear Dennis clearly under the reverb. His voice is definitely a lot quieter than Brian's for the most part but it pops out more on those phrase ending syllables that people mentioned... or in some cases it sound like his voice is boosted or replaces Brian's altogether.
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Combining albums as a Two-fer. on: April 16, 2015, 05:28:36 AM
Surfer Girl / All Summer Long

My favorite of the surf / car albums.  That would be a killer 2-fer.

I have this twofer in the shape of a double cassette. It's a good one.
10  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Tobias Jesso Jr. (serious Dennis Wilson vibes... chills) on: February 19, 2015, 06:34:33 AM
Ok. This guys album is out soon. I'm picking up strong Dennis Wilson vibes... especially thematically on the song Hollywood. Really great songwriters still exist. Do yourself a favour.

I missed it entirely. How do I read the unreadable?

I'd get rid of Heroes and Villains and Good Vibrations as I've always felt they just don't belong. I'm gonna start it off with You're Welcome just for the fun of it. It's a 21 minute trip.

I love the song "Dennis" is playing to Karen, which was written especially for the movie. It is just beautiful and I really could see Dennis writing something like this.

I hear shades of "Holy Man" in that snippet. Part of the verse, part of the "and you can follow" chorus.

“The Beach Boys Live In Sacramento 1964” also released.

That's been booted heaps but is this the first official release?
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: WIBNTLA Reviews on: August 23, 2013, 11:19:01 PM
The song rules! It's classic Dennis and with amazing 1971 production values. Who is on drums? Dennis or Kowalski - the drums are awesome!
It definitely would've made Surf's Up a better album. Take A Load Off Your Feet (especially) and Student Demonstration Time don't fit too well for me. I don't really dig Disney Girls either - Bruce is a bit too twee/naff/square for me. Sometimes I have time for it though.

Although this isn't accurate at all - I've been listening this as a possible first album from DW.

17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Would Dennis have been a good frontman? on: May 28, 2013, 06:11:10 PM
Dennis fronting his own band on a Pacific Ocean Blue tour would've worked. Even if he just stood there and sang into the mic (like when he would do "You are so beautiful") or singing from behind the piano - that woulda been a spectacle. He wouldn't have been a camp or showy front man (like love, jagger or mercury), I think crowds would have accepted him on the basis of just being a strong presence.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Beach Boys 2012 Remasters! on: May 14, 2013, 05:20:17 PM
I'm not usually a guy to buy a different copy of an album if I already own it but the other day I was listening on my headphones to C&TP straight after playing a Frank Zappa album from the same time period and the difference in sound quality was like night and day. The Beach Boys album sounded so quiet and muffled by comparison. A nicely remastered C&TP and also Holland (which is very murky in places) is something I'd very much want to own.
If you think the remastered CATP is quiet and muffled, then you ought to hear the Epic/Caribou CD release, or even worse, the original Brother/Reprise LP. It's just a bad sounding album.

I love the sound of this album. It's amazing!

21  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Is anyone else ridiculously excited about the NEW DAFT PUNK ALBUM on: April 23, 2013, 05:51:51 PM
Surely BB fans who like Daft Punk would also like the disco version of Here Comes The Night. If you don't - you may be lying to yourselves.
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Video: Carl explains his behavior. Press Conference, Perth 1978 on: January 21, 2013, 04:30:34 PM
The clip at the airport and of the press conference were aired on Saturday (Jan 19) at about 9:30am here in Australia. A friend txted me to tune to ABC but I missed the good bits and only managed to catch the film clip to Getcha Back (entertaining in another way) which followed the press conference . Glad someone uploaded it!

Kevin Barnes (Of Montreal) does a splendid cover of "Little Bird"!

Stephen Kalinich has commented on this video.

Thank you Kevin for recording this.It was the first song I wrote with Dennis and came out in 1968 on the FRiends album. There ar some lyrics left out for the Beach Boys version that are in my original version. I love this song. As i heard you and watched the video it brought back the day i wrote the lyric and left it on the piano for Dennis to set to music. It was afternoon on Sunset Blvd. A grand day and i love dennis and miss him in the flesh. This song was a blessing for me. stevie kalinich

I am almost 71 now and still very active and writing every day but it is not every day i get an opportunity like this.

25  Smiley Smile Stuff / Concert Reviews / Re: Show 72: Burswood Dome - Perth, AU 9/6/2012 on: September 11, 2012, 02:45:01 AM
Mike was great as the MC of the night. I really appreciated his presence. Plus his voice was stronger than I thought it would be from some of the stuff I've seen on youtube.
Brian sang a lot better than I expected. I am not a fan his voice of recent decades but even though he looked like he was asleep he definitely put some effort in with his singing and actually surprised me with his ability.
Bruce sang really good. I find his cheese-ball songs embarrassing but he absolutely nailed Disney Girls. Those high notes at the end were flawless.
It was so cool to hear David playing those surf solos. He played them awesomely. His guitar tone for most of the set was perfect. It seemed to get a bit cheesy toward the end of the show. Too much drive. Not enough surf.
Al sang really well too.

Great show.
