The Eva Cassidy version of Autumn Leaves. She has been gone for many years and I just Discovered her a few months ago while listening to random stuff on Pandora. I can't recall when I Was last so moved by a piece of music upon first listen. I have been going back to it almost daily. You may have heard this before but if not, and you love the music discussed on this board, you should check it out.

Neil Young fell 3 weeks ago at Desert Trip, Steven Tyler fell off the stage a few years ago. Madonna also. There would be others. It happens.
Really, this says it all. Keith Richards had to explain over and over about the coconut tree. So. BW fell off his piano stool. So what? He got up and and got right back into the song. Hope he ain't too sore!

Won't be long before these high quality shows are no more. I f you haven' t had your fill of live Beachboys, go see either or when you can. I've slowed my pace of chasing these guys around the map but glad I've seen both numerous times these past few years, through the personnel changes since C50, and have no regrets, just good memories. While I've been taken aback by changes in both bands, the sonic results are nothing but pleasing. Go see em!

Just got back from some lengthy air travel and skimmed both Mike's and Brian's books in airport bookstores. didn't buy either but instead bought a bio on the life of John Updike. I wanted, no hungered, for something I hadn't heard or read. Brian's book seemed mildly compelling but a bit thin, if you know what I mean. Might pick it up later on discount.

"Love You is siphoned from the meandering mind of a madman." Definitely a missed opportunity for a promo pull quote there.
Siphoned from the meandering mind of a madman. My day to day life and approach to living is thusly siphoned. I think I love love you for that reason........because I relate to it. I suspect those who Love It do so for similar reasons. An album of madness for madmen. this stuff doesn't grow on trees. those who love it appreciate that fact at some level.

Mike could get one of those leafy shower caps likeBilly Gibbons wear on all occasions. I've got to say wearing a hat of some kind becomes a part of a bald guys presentation, whether it is a rug or a hat or a topper of the Billy gibbons sort. People don't know who u r without it. I have personally had this experience. Once u have taken up this deceptive practice it becomes very hard to go back to public display of the old shiner.

Holland has long been a favorite BB album for me, and for a time, I considered it their best album. SOS, the Big Sur/California set, "Spark in the Dark", seemed like they were all strong and contributing members for a moment. and the bonus EP Pied Piper/magic transistor. Loved the packaging.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rolling Stone Readers' Poll: The 10 Best Beach Boys Deep Cuts
|
on: August 03, 2016, 09:57:04 PM

You guys have touched on most of the good "deep cuts". Point is that there are a good couple of dozen most excellent cuts that many casual fans have not heard. In particular, Time to Get Alone and SNJ. These two cuts always make me want to bring them to the attention of others. 20 years apart and no where near the "peak" years of the band, yet stand out tracks that most would enjoy if pointed in their direction. I'll resist the temptation to make a longer list.

to have bought and listened to a brand new analogue 45 rpm copy of Fun,Fun, Fun while it was in the top 40 and to hear it on your parents new and huge console record player was a thrilling experience. I recall the compelling sound of the organ on that song as it sounded then. whenI hear the song now on digital I don' t hear that organ stand out the way it did then. but maybe I'm just getting old........chocolate ice cream and potato chips don't taste as good as they did then.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Do you ever get sick of The Beach Boys?
|
on: July 16, 2016, 07:38:11 PM

I don't get sick of them but I listen to other stuff because there is so much other good stuff I have missed over the decades listening to Beach Boys much of the time. Also, I am a guitar player. I find much of the BB catalogue too challenging for solo guitar or just not complete without the vocals and musical embellishments. so I listen to more basic music much of the time to grow my guitar skills and expand my musical palate. also, the people I play with seem to have no interest in playing the sort of music the Beach Boys play. Fact is, few groups of old guy garage bands are capable of performing Beach Boys material beyond the old 145 progression songs of the early 60's. Having said that, when's I tire of jamming with the old dudes on garage band tracks, and listening to those tracks to learn them, I go back to the beach boys. that harmony is like a drug that always delivers. That music is an entity that rises above all other music . That harmonic wistful lonely sound they produced is always a comfort and joy. And nothing the behavior of .individual members or their managers or spouses can change. It is already on the record. and always there waiting when I want it

There are some Foster's Freeze locations still kicking around. There used to be even more up north in the Bay Area, and I believe there are at least three in the Bay Area at the moment that are still open.
Foster's is in Salinas CA in town. Went there a couple of times this spring. seems to be a popular spot.

It all sounded and looked a little odd to me. but I've seen them liv e several times. I have never seen this lineup on film under such lighting, close ups, or fro that matter with an orchestra.. and maybe too, they were hyper attentive to getting the performance right and in sync with everything.......a major gig! but the guys seemed a little tight if not wooden in their performance, relative to the bang up show they usually deliver. wished the country could have seen a typically high quality show of Mike and the band

I listened to NPP recently while out on a sunny day playing around with the garage door open. Really hit the spot. I wasn't sure last year but I am now calling this one a keeper. I like almost all of it. Interestingly, I first heard right time as the best cut but now not so much.
A couple of people mentioned Ray Davies recent solo material. I have not stopped listening to Other People's lives and Working Mans Cafe since they were released. If any of you have not heard these two albums, I think you are missing a real treat. Best Kinks or Ray released in a long, long, time. Rays story telling has never been better and the music is killer.

amazed that BW is still doing this and glad he has the support of that fantastic vocal and musical crew. glad for those of you who are able to see this level of excellence from BW and company. I've had the good fortune of seeing BW and many of these people several times since 2000 at the original PS tours. I may never get to experience that again but so glad some of you are able to experience this at this late date

That album stands as some of the better BB stuff of the last decade. It should not disappear from the market. Just listened to some of it today on a personal comp with stuff from TWGMTR and NPP. right up there with the best of recent years........and Glen Campbell too!

I haven't listened to the whole Pet Sounds box set I own in years. an entire box set for one single LP. nor the other issues such as the "gold " CD nor paid too much attention to nuances on more recent reissues on various comps such as MIC or other touched up releases of individual tracs. I don' t think I would be interested in any more releases unless they were truly eye opening jaw dropping recordings.
