1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: CD Twofers Sound Quality 1990 vs. 2001 on: October 30, 2018, 03:09:41 AM
I love the 2001 mixes, especially, "Carl And The Passion", and "MIU/Love you". I have a very good headphone, and the sound is excellent!

Thank you -

since I got a new hifi set up (partly reshuffled old gear, new connection cables, new speakers, a new player), I guess I'll give these two a go this evening.

Then there would be message boards on which people got overly excited about questions like what if they hadn’t, what if it hadn’t, and what if it were.

...is the correct answer, all in one.

I doubt whether Immanuel Kant, David Hume, or Ludwig Wittgenstein would have come up with a reply of such shining clarity, pleasant brevity, and eminent wisdom.

Immanuel Kant, yesterday:"No. Certainly not. The Captain hat völlig Recht. Ich hätte es nicht besser formulieren können. Danke schön.

3  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Album PRESS RELEASE on: May 11, 2018, 01:09:19 PM
"California Suite"?

I would presume/assume some sort of medley/overture. I'm wondering if it might be a bit like the Van Dyke Parks bit from the "Pet Sounds" orchestral shows, albeit of course much shorter.
I really want a copy of the VDP overture....! Anyone?

PM me.

I think I'll stick with this:

5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike's ok with Hologram Tour on: May 11, 2018, 07:16:16 AM
What happens when you throw rotten eggs and tomatoes towards a hologram?

In case of a rotten performance, for instance.
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Something's coming...Stay tuned on: May 11, 2018, 05:04:34 AM
It’s going to be one of those awful orchestral backup albums. They’ve done Elvis, Roy O. and Aretha thus far.

I'll go see if there's a James Last Plays The Beach Boys LP somewhere.

Cheaper, and way, way better.
7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike's ok with Hologram Tour on: May 11, 2018, 05:03:01 AM
Who created such crazy-lame thing as "hologram tour" in the 1st place should be punished. & I'm being very kind here. Smiley

My idea of a fitting punishment:

Mike and his people are all being projected onto the stage, and 'performing'. By then, they think playing Summer In Paradise in full is the best representation of the Beach Boys' complete achievements. The band members themselves are enjoying their own performance at home, from a couch perspective.

Then, much to their surprise, a very real and alive Brian Wilson appears on stage, and he simply walks though the projected singers and players, with his impressive physique.

Now, wouldn't that be nice?

Will there be no physical release then?

 Cry

I'm not on iTunes, and don't plan to become a member either. What must*) I do?

*) doing nothing is not an option, not even busily so.

There hasn't been a physical release of any of the end-of-year "Copyright Extension" releases since they began in 2013 (unless one counts the "Party" 2-CD set from 2015).

There are numerous options to purchase digital downloads. Amazon is perhaps the most mainstream and easy. HDTracks is another. I believe there are several others.

Thank you! Light at the end of the tunnel, then, and not the light of the proverbial oncoming train... time for action!

10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Love You on: December 05, 2017, 09:11:59 AM
Don't see it as modular.  The songs seem to have been written as complete songs, demo'd that way by Brian, no switching about of parts from one song to the other.  don't know if they were RECORDED modular like Smiley Smile and some of Wild Honey was, recording parts of the song and editing them together rather than performing them all the way through.

I would agree with this. As much as I'd wished for our new member Bissonic to have kickstarted a 1,000 page discussion thread that would have put the Hoffmannites to eternal shame, I really don't think Love You was constructed in a similar way to SMiLE.

11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: unleash mike love on: December 05, 2017, 08:55:10 AM
That actually sounds pretty cool. I notice Mike is being somewhat careful not to overstep the BBs name rules (even though he already has), by booking these as solo Mike Love gigs and not Beach Boys gigs. I wonder if he'll continue to do these.

He'll be busking in the streets in 20 years time, with an acoustic guitar, and still call himself "The Beach Boys".

I think.
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 2017 copyright extension release details? on: December 05, 2017, 05:30:28 AM
Why wasn't LAPD informed about this matter earlier? -

the guys in the lab need a bit more detail. People's lives depend on it, you know.

Mr. Linett?
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys Wild Honey(Sunshine Tomorrow) 2CD Set? on: August 24, 2017, 10:19:12 AM
the correct CD to listen to (late at night under candlelight) having just been identified for us (as if there's any doubt)

I will identify the correct Belgium craft beer that was alluded to - BROEJEL (a bock lager), chill well

Ha! Cheers, and what a fine beer name it is: Broejel! Plus: I love bock beers.

The circle is round, the question is answered, and I guess SSnet can now consider its grand mission fulfilled.
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys Wild Honey(Sunshine Tomorrow) 2CD Set? on: August 24, 2017, 03:01:23 AM
OK -

I have Sunshine Tomorrow for more than two months now. Time for an evaluation.

1. It is a labour of love, and it is so much more than the umpteenth reworking of a minor classic, or a release born out of necessity (may that glitch in copyright extension laws live forever! Best mistake in the history of our universe, bar none!)

2. It came out of nowhere (seemingly), no big fanfare, and its presentation is as modest as it is complete and accurate; everything comes together with this one

3. I get enormous pleasure out of playing it - I reach for it late in the evening, no TV or any other screen on. A lit candle does the trick (well, and a good craft beer from Belgium).

The BBs catalogue is gigantic, and still this thing is one of its highlights.

Cheers to all involved!

Found a few people on the Hoffman board that seem happy

 Shocked

 Cheesy

Fun post of the week!
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Wild Honey LP Reissue in STEREO - 2017 on: August 23, 2017, 11:29:00 AM
I just went to my retailer's website.

It says: Wild Honey 50th Anniversary re-release, LP, Stereo Mix, date of release: June 30, 2017, available within 4 days after ordering (which means that it's not an import).

It is highly unlikely that anything of this is not true (they're very accurate). And it's some 8 weeks ago, already. I'll drop by there tomorrow and ask how it is.

Thanks to all -

your replies remind me of my personal opinion: BW is the greatest impressionist painter in all of pop music. Small, personal letters from him mean so much to me - he is sort of an everyman, in the literary sense. No bragging about big achievements in our quite insane society.

VDP remarked that SMiLE 2004 for him was like a wonderful collection of beautiful post stamps.

He is right about this. Life is not at all about getting filthy rich, and having sex with untold numbers of women.
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I Went To Sleep on: July 29, 2017, 08:22:08 AM

Underrated Gem ??

Id say underrated in that few outside of BB fans know it exists.

From the greatest accidental album ever 20/20.

Best album review I ever read!

IWTS is a small, pastoral, highly personal piece of art.

Underrated Gem ??

Not by me, sir -

I rate it as a minor classic. Actually, if I were to compile a BBs double disk, this song would finish it.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys Wild Honey(Sunshine Tomorrow) 2CD Set? on: July 28, 2017, 12:45:11 AM
I (all of us) noticed the distortion in 'Country Air' -

is it deliberate?

Was it meant to imitate the sound of bees?

Am I bonkers?

Hi Don

It is a Chamberlin, which is what the Mellotron was based on. A very early sample player and the distortion is either inherent in the instrument itself, or occured from the way they recorded it. Perhaps, as you say, it was intentional.

Not sure what patch they used, some people think flute.

Many thanks! I love this kind of detail, and now I see that it is, intended or not, authentic (not an artefact).

Keep in mind Brian Wilson suddenly quit touring around the same age after a mental breakdown.  I can't imagine the situation for Justin Bieber is significantly different.

I don't see the Beiber emerging from this and writing something on the level of a modern day Pet Sounds. Cheesy

 Cheesy

(I envision Bieber befriending a young and gifted poet and lyricist; they might ingest a mushroom or two; and suddenly the Bieb starts hallucinating about Canada's Great Past, its indigenous population, its beautiful outdoors, its modernization, and everything else under the sun. The lyricist barely can keep mental track with such an explosion of sheer creativity. He jots down his ideas at lightning speed.

The Bieb then asks his friend if he could bring a moose in there.)

Kinda makes me almost glad that these days Mike just sonically destroys our ears with covers of old songs instead of recording originals.

LOL love that the album is demonic enough to keep playing after the stereo is shot Grin

Hypehat's review of SIP is legendary:

Ok, so I have a half a bottle of wine in me and another to go after a steady day of drinking, and listening to Summer In Paradise seems like a fantastic idea right now. It's been so hard to live without it, so lets talk about it.

1) Hot Fun In The Summertime

DEAR JESUS THE SNARE. We will have to get used to this.
Also, "Whisperin'" Mike Love. I like to picture putting HOURS into these leads.
Carl telling me we can "Bum bum bum" is kinda flattering imo.
SAX SOLO. Those breaks make me flinch.
This thing is mixed so fucking terribly Carl's high notes vanish from the mix.
also, WHAT THE HELL IS CARL DOING. I guess given Beckley/Lamm/Wilson, it's safe to say that absolutely every vestige of Carl's taste had disappeared by this point. He might have even thought this was A GOOD IDEA.

2. Surfin'

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
f*** me, the vocals on this are absolutely terrrrrrrrrrible. NASAL DOMINATION. Carl being SHITE. Like, even his smack-addled late 70's performances have merit. This sucks.
Not to mention ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING ELSE ABOUT THIS.
new lyrics. NEW LYRICS
MORE OF THEM.
I'm in pain. There are ten more songs. WHY.

3. SUMMER OF LOVE.

Mike Love, I will come round your house and make my fist meditate up your arse for this.
CHRIST ON A BICYCLE THE DJ SCRATCHES.
My Grandma has better flow than MC "Whisperin" Love.
attached and back don't rhyme, you bald apple juice chuggin goon.

4. Island Fever

These verse appear to be words in the english language. But they make no sense.
The Beach Boys' hymn to sexually transmitted diseases?
"My baby caught it and I'm not quite sure how/she might have got it from her travel brochure?" - Denny lives?
My baby can't dance or sleep because IT BURNS.
KEYCHANGE
f*** synthesisers, btw.

5. Still Surfin'

What the hell is this.
WHAT THE HELL IS THIS.
The fact I've spent a lot of time editing other things during this song speaks volumes.
What the hell makes ANYONE think it's ok to drop mexican terms for women in verses. Mamacita and the like. f*** YOU, MIKE.

6. Slow Summer Dancin' (Unneccesary parentheses)

IN BOTH CORNERS, BRUCE JOHNSTON
DETAILING HOW HE'S GONNA MAKE SWEET, SWEET, SWEET LOVE TO GROUPIES.
Misheard "I'll treat my angel really nice" as "I'll treat my ANUS.....REALLY NICE!"
Al "The Songwriter" Jardine keeping up his fine, fine, tradition of contributing entirely original melodic and lyrical ideas to songs. HOW DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT
That sax break. NO.

7. Strange Things Happen.

Ok, this is the worst thing so far.

It's something to do with the combination of SLAMMIN' MIKE LOVE JAMS and Al "Well, that never happened before!" Jardine learning about sex in 1991.

OH MY GOD. This is so so so s oo soooooo awful. I am crying with laughter.

8. Remember (Walking In The Sand)

Carl, I do love you, but when Mary Weiss dies she's going to find you in heaven and BEAT SEVEN SHADES OF CRAP OUT OF YOU FOR THIS.

"Echoing" Mike Love is also particularly ridiculous.

THE SAX SOLOS. AHSHGSHDGFXBGDGXFNJDMKYI6

GUYS I'M LOSING THE WILL TO LIVE. I HATE THIS ALBUM.

9. Lahina Aloha

Tropical beats
meaningless title
SOOOOOLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
palm trees
paradise
"Whisperin" Love

the f*** is this DRIVEL. I FEEL LIKE I'M BEING VIOLATED WITH OFFENSIVE ITEMS CARVED OUT OF JELLY OR SOMETHING. OFFENSIVE SMOOTHNESS. It's some terrible oxymoron i wouldn't believe possible if it wasn't fucking me in my ears.
THE HELL.

THREE MORE TRACKS LEFT, YOU CAN DO IT.

10. Under The Boardwalk

MIke Love, you get the f*** away from my girl.
Carl, I'm sorry, but The Drifters are also going to beat the hell out of you up there too. Possibly Carole King as well. At least they'll be tired after beating mike love to shreds. And you, Al.
ANOTHER SAXOPHONE SOLO. mo'fos.

As an aside, guys, this is one of the most awful albums in terms of production, mixing and mastering I've ever heard. IT IS THIN AS HELL.

11. SUMMER IN PARADISE.

dig that jangly fauxbyrds guitar.
THOSE 'HARMONY' VOCALS ARE CRAP. BRIAN WOULD BEAT YOU DEAD IF HE WAS IN THAT SESSION.
I think these might be EVEN WORSE LYRICS than Strange Things Happen or MC LOVE in something else.
f***, IT'S JIM MCGUINN.
that explains the guitar.
YOU BITCH, MCGUINN.

This is shite. musically, aurally, it's balls. BALLLLLLS. BIG SWEATY, HAIRY, OOZING TESTICLES. I feel ill.

12. Stamorever.

I have no more bile. I just have wine. After the systematic and calculated raping of the entire spectrum of pop music through these twelve tracks, some arsehole covering a Dennis Wilson song pales in comparison. I mean, it even has woodblocks on it, which makes it more reverent of a 'classic' bb's sound than anything on this record yet.

SEE WHAT THIS RECORD HAS DONE TO ME. I AM DEFENDING STAMOS

and with one fucking horrible sounding fake midi chord on the keyboard, that's it. The worst record I ever heard.

 Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Many, many thanks for reposting this brilliant piece of serious reviewing! I just read it for the first time. Now comes the small print:

I never heard it. I actually am going to look for a copy.
