I concur that it was, in fact, the shizznet.

Not really ...

The most difficult, time consuming, and expensive element is not the listening but the transferring of old, fragile media. You must have the proper facilities to play such tapes, and the expertise to treat and handle them. Simply locating a working machine to play back some of the tapes would not be easy (how many folks here have a 1/2" 3-track recorder or a 1" 12-track?), and maintaining the variety of machines to play some of the masters is a specialized field. There are a few companies out there who can handle it ... Sonicraft in New Jersey comes to mind.

That's why I said evaluation, not initial playback...

Fascinating article.  You would think that the evaluation of such recordings could be crowdsourced.

Moderators??  How is this post appropriate in ANY way?

One of the highlights of the reunion tour was when Stamos showing up and clowning was shut down at the request of the pros in Brian's camp...quickly and decisively, so that everybody could focus on putting on a great show.

Per Rocky's suggestion - convert to ALAC.  iTunes will automatically convert to 16bit for playback within the Apple eco system, and you can use any one of a number of other players (or iTunes add-ons) for 24bit playback.

This is actually the first major reissue campaign that I'm holding out for high res downloads rather than jumping on CDs the day they came out.  We're finally moving beyond CD quality audio, it's just taking a while.

The label listed here, SMC Recordings, is a Hip Hop label.

I thought Mike Love lives in Lake Tahoe?

Have you ever gone underwater and looked up at the sunlight beaming down through the rippling surface?  When I hear this (the first 50 seconds) I always think of Dennis drowning, hearing echoes of his life and watching the dappled sunlight fade to black...

That's hilarious, I'll bet Stamos just couldn't wait to get back and hover.  Sounds like a worthwhile charity though, good for Mike, that must have been some nasty jetlag so close on the heels of the London shows.

Hey tomorrow is Scott Totten's birthday.

There's such a fine line between "troll" and "petulant child"

If it's copied to digital and then back to analog, is is really still "analog"?  All of the restoration was done in the digital realm.

"At the start of the restoration process, engineers conducted extensive tests before copying the analog master tapes into the digital realm using 24-bit/192 kHz resolution and a Prism A-D converter. "

Tom Waits is a terrific "cinematic" songwriter, I could absolutely hear Brian tackling some of those tunes.  Think  past the gruff Waits delivery, and consider how movie-like many of Brian's productions have been.

Interesting example:

It was my understanding that the new 2012 releases of both Surf's Up and Sunflower (only) will be the 2009 remasters.  Is this not correct?
95  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Beach Boys 2012 Remasters! on: September 18, 2012, 12:13:35 AM
Apologies if this has been discussed already (I couldn't find it), but Surf's Up is available over at HDtracks in 24bit.  Anybody else considering forgoing the CDs and holding out for the high res versions?  Betcha there's more coming.

Imus, the last time I caught his show he was repeatedly interrupting his co-hosts blathering on about the greatness of Kenny Chesney.

MacDonald's dislike of "Across The Universe" nearly invalidated the whole book for me.
98  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: ISN'T IT TIME SINGLE VERSION (BBC Radio 2) LISTEN NOW on: September 03, 2012, 03:01:01 PM
I think you nailed it Cabinessenceking.  I don't like the sound of this as I don't like the sound of a lot of modern music, but it does sound contemporary.  I don't blame them at all for trying to make a hit single, at least we still have the original version.

My fear is that if this does become a hit, some of the unused tunes will be mixed in a similar fashion for that follow up album.

Very curious to hear the song about John Lennon.

Wow amazing!  Thanks so much for sharing.  There's something about seeing the kids...at the Bowl show, the Carl tribute video was nice..but what really moved me was seeing Justyn singing Carl's parts on "All This Is That."  I regret I didn't hear about this Grammy museum show until it was way sold out.
