You're that beach ball popping guy?  That guy always bugged me.

Thanks Justin!  Unfortunately my cable provider does not carry the subchannel, so still no HD.
103  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Which is the best sounding MONO Pet Sounds? on: June 30, 2012, 10:23:47 PM
My favorite is also the DCC.  Overall it sounds the most authentic to me, well balanced and with no obvious attempt to "push" it in any particular direction (i.e. increase the bass or the spaciousness, reduce the hiss, etc).

My DVR shows a listing for KLCS at 10-11p on July 6, repeating at 4am on July 7, but nothing in HD (yet).

I still can't find a listing for this in HD in the Los Angeles area.

Can't see my self buying some of these titles for the third time (minimum, Pet Sounds I've lost count) on the CD format.  But hi-res downloads?  Now we're talkin.  I think we're gonna see an ambitious program like the Rolling Stones on HDtracks.
107  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why Were Carl & Dennis So Easy To \ on: June 21, 2012, 11:23:17 PM
I feel Carl's absence much more on the record than in the live concert experience.  I think it's partially due to becoming accustomed to seeing Brian and his band over the past decade plus, and the fact that for me Carl's soaring vocals were the big redeeming factor in much of the later Beach Boys material (California Dreamin' and Kokomo to name two).
108  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why are the interviews so uninteresting? on: June 21, 2012, 09:56:28 PM
Regarding Rolling Stone, in the past 5 or 6 years now it's very quietly gone back to not sucking.  It really was utter garbage in the 90s when it became a fashion magazine but nowdays the reporting is often very good on matters political, social AND musical.

And yeah, listen to the Jian interview!  He did a great job (other than maybe not bringing in Dave very much) he's not intimidated by Brian which I think is a mistake too many interviewers make.

109  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: TWGMTR available in 24 bit / 48 kHz on: June 08, 2012, 11:19:04 PM
I checked several tracks with Spek and the 24-bit HDtracks version of TWGMTR is not up-sampled.   It represets a noticeable improvement in sound quality over the CD version, well worth it!

Happy to post a scan, will the moderators jump on me for that tho??
111  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: "The Fragile Beach Boys Reunion" - Rolling Stone Magazine on: June 07, 2012, 05:42:20 PM
So no thoughts on the actual article?!  I thought it was really well done, probably the best one yet in conjunction with this reunion.  It gives some real insight into the tour.  Brian's conversation on the plane is a classic.
112  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did you get your copy? on: June 05, 2012, 08:48:49 PM
QVC seemed to suggest here and there that the cd would ship early, so I ordered it from them (along with their bonus CD) even though I had already pre-ordered it on Amazon.  And yes in the meantime I downloaded the leak because I'm impatient.  Then early today the 24bit version became available on HDtracks so I purchased that, which sounds great and will be my go-to listening version.  The Amazon pre-order arrived at the house later this afternoon.  It's still in the wrapping and I'm thinking of passing it along as a gift.  That QVC version?  Hasn't even shipped yet last I checked.  I may keep it due to the bonus disc as a collectable I haven't decided yet.

This is the first time a major purchase such as this has been available on the day of release as a 24bit download (at least, a major purchase I've been interested in).  The post CD era may have arrived.
113  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Question about the PBS special coming up on: June 05, 2012, 12:57:40 PM
I noticed at least three cameras on stage that were unrelated to the video screens including two guys (or maybe it was just one that moved around a lot) swirling around with steadycams.

There was a lot of filming going on at the Hollywood Bowl show.

Again, anybody know who the accordion player was?  It's been buggin' me that out of dozens of people on that stage last night, he was the only musician I couldn't identify.
118  Smiley Smile Stuff / Concert Reviews / Re: Show 24: Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood, CA 6/2/12 on: June 03, 2012, 01:35:07 AM
Did not see Billy or Rob with California Saga.  They sounded good, I wish they did a proper opening set instead of just two songs.  I got a little choked up seeing Justyn singing Carl's parts on "All This Is That"

Who was the guy that came out and played accordion for one song, standing between Scott and Darian??
119  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New album info (as it rolls out...) on: May 30, 2012, 10:33:39 AM
Definite stand out for me here is "From There To Back Again" - great lead vocal from Al, this track sounds like classic Sunflower/Holland Beach Boys tune to me.  "Bill & Sue" sounds like an Imagination b-side (first impression).

Is there a rain dance we can do to keep Stamos off the stage?
121  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Loren Daro comments on Brian & LSD (possibly...) on: May 28, 2012, 02:35:09 AM
What's here that's particularly revelatory?  That Brian may have at one point said he was "faking it"?  He also said he burned the SMiLE tapes.  Brian has a history of giving a short easy answer when he doesn't feel like pontificating on a particular topic.  What would you expect from Brian, a lengthy clinical explanation of his problems?!  Loren seems like somebody who felt accused and guilty for many years, and clearly doesn't have an understanding of mental illness (or hasn't followed Brian's subsequent life very closely, probably both).

I must respectfully disagree, USB is not limited to 16 bit:

And as for the Squeezebox, I'm not using it's analog output, or it's internal DAC, I'm using the USB output sending digital straight to the external DAC...

A quality DAC can be had for less than $500.  I use this one with a Squeezebox and the new(ish) enhanced audio plug in to allow direct output via USB:

Of course the sky is the limit with audiophile equipment, but I've been really pleased with this little DAC and it didn't break the bank.

I have a hunch this 24 bit release of SMiLE is just the tip of the iceberg as far as upcoming archival releases.  This is exciting!!
