51  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Tempo of live BB song performances throughout the years on: April 16, 2016, 02:21:24 AM
Personally, I prefer a live version of a song to have its own energy and character. Dennis really drives this performance and Carl in particular really feeds off that energy. In contrast, the nineties rendition seems rather lifeless.

Give me this live version of "Catch A Wave" over those lame 90's versions anyday:

The Beach Boys performed GDTM live at least once in 1965. Not sure if it was played acoustically, though.
57  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys version of Beatles 1+...What would you want on it? on: November 12, 2015, 05:52:33 PM
Here's your mission, should you choose to accept it: fill up 2 mythical DVD's of Beach Boy clips and promo films. Keep it to the classic period of 1961 to 1974. There should be more than enough to fill up 2 discs.

(and yes, I know bootleggers have cobbled together similar projects, but I'm interested in what YOU would do.)

OK, I'll give it a shot...

Anyone else notice these unused lyrics?

Whether harps heal the memory
Whether heaven's hopes will never return
Whether surface joy will ever be found
Doesn't matter if it's ever around

Feel goes. Feel flows.
59  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl Wilson - Long Promised Road 'LIVE' CD on: September 28, 2015, 03:34:19 PM
I'd buy a live cd from Carl's tour. It's been a while since I've listened to one of the shows, but if I remember correctly Carl and his band did a damn good version of "I Thank You" by Sam and Dave

I could be misremembering, but I think “I Thank You” was part of the very small number of 1983 gigs. Not sure if he did it at any 1981 gigs. I think I’ve heard one pretty awful-sounding (in terms of sound quality, not performance) audience recording of Carl doing “I Thank You” in 1983. It was so muddy it was hard to make heads or tails of it.

Carl did perform "I Thank You" in 1981 according to this:

This is probably something everyone knows but me, but why wasn't Dennis there for "New Year's Rockin' Eve"?

IIRC, Dennis refused to wear a matching outfit.
61  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: IJWMFTT - background vocals on: September 18, 2015, 04:24:42 PM
Just to clarify, I wasn't using that as any kind of "evidence".  I'm well aware that Al's memory isn't exactly elephantine.  Wink

Yeah, Al’s been doing this for decades. I recall a fan story from the 70s or 80s where someone asked Al to sign a copy of “Smiley Smile”, and when Al saw the album, he seemed fascinated and asked where the fan got it, as if it was some long-lost, obscure thing that never got released.

Perhaps Al was asked to sign this version of Smiley Smile:

Additionally, according to the KAEOS liners, Glen played 6-string bass on "I Get Around" and possibly "Hushabye."

Being a former UK subscriber, until the finances hit home a touch too heavily, firstly I can tell you that the delivery takes very little time to hit these shores... always prompt. But secondly, is there any possibility you guys would consider offering an e-copy of the mag ? Cheaper to compile, distribute and purchase - and the PDF layout I'm guessing is already in place. I know it's not the same as a physical copy in your hand (much as the same comparison as buying off iTunes against having the vinyl yourself) but I get Goldmine delivered that way, don't miss out on anything - and the subs, particularly for those outside the U.S., are much cheaper. Just a thought ...

Hey Malc -

We have considered it; our issues are delivered to the printer in PDF format, so they are ready to go.  The challenge is putting the user/password infrastructure in place so that only active subscribers can download the issues; otherwise the link would get propagated across the Internet for free.  Goldmine is part of the larger Krause Publications, so they had the resources to invest in that secure download infrastructure across all of their publications.

Lee

Lee, would it be feasible perhaps to email each subscriber their own password protected copy (using either a predefined password or one provided by ESQ), including password permissions protection to preclude printing, copying, or editing of the document?

Colour slides of Dennis from the Pacific Ocean Blue photo shoots lots of outakes from the familar ones that got used on the reissue/pr. Hope whoever wins this is able to share. (They're selling to US only Sad)

"Dennis Wilson, founding member and drummer of the Beach Boys / 79 "ORIGINAL" Color Slides. Photos have Dennis Wilson at his home, on his boat "Harmony" with friends, and of course Dennis on the beach. Some with his children and dog. Date of slides are April 1977. Some of the photos are taken early summer 1977 on Venice Beach for the Pacific Ocean Blue photo sessions. Similar photos from these sessions can be found on book covers and CD promos. Other photos in this lot are taken in Hawaii, and off the coast of California."

A very slight variation, complete with a "FULL RANGE BIASONIC PROCESS ®" sticker.

Ok, what am I missing?  Other than the Biasonic sticker, I don't see any variation

Nothing, just the sticker, which your copy is missing  Grin

BTW, some copies of the Shut Down Vol. 2 / Little Deuce Coupe reel boxes came with a variation of the sticker proclaiming "NEW BIASONIC PROCESS FOUR TRACK"

When was the first time Brian started talking out of the side of his mouth? Like noticeably in interviews, studio footage, etc.

I was thinking of the studio footage that takes place in the booth, I think it's used for Pet Sounds or late 60s footage on documentaries. I feel like you can see Brian talk out of the side of his mouth then. I think there's an older guy in the booth with him wearing glasses (not Murry or chuck).

You mean this footage:

GO magazine February 17 and Melody Maker May 6, (both from 1967) continue to refer to Bruce as the 'phantom' Beach Boy.

Interestingly, during these concerts, Brian sings lead on "You're So Good To Me" and parts of "Sloop" that others had been singing in his place on the road.

I'm thinking that maybe the guy in the blue shirt on page 33 is Terry Melcher?

That'd make sense since Bruce was in the unedited photo, but I'm not so sure. I always thought it looked like Mike's brother, Steve.
75  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: August 27, 2015, 02:25:40 AM
I just listened to the early 80's Beach Boys medley. This was huge back in the day and it was fun to revisit, but what is the story with the beginning of Barbara Ann? It sounds so out of place.

I suspect it was to match the key of the preceding song "Surfin' Safari" to make a less jarring transition between the two songs.
