1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Couldn't Make This Up If I Tried.... on: April 18, 2010, 09:40:15 PM
I guess I was kinda star struck. After the fact, my fiancee asked me why we didn't mention to him that at our wedding,  we plan to dance to a song he co wrote, "Onlly With You."

I've been kinda kcking myself because I would have LOVEd to pick his brain for a bit over a cup of coffee.

Oh well, Mike Love, Not War.

My fiancee and I are in Solana Beach, CA this weekend for a little vacation. She 's been bugging me all weekend long to walk across the street to the yoga studio and give it a try. And so wth a slight hangover this morning, I obliged. I stretched and sweated for an hour or so and kept my eye on an older guy in the back of the class, because he looked very familiar. After Beginner's Yoga 101, I told my fiancee that I was almost positve Mike Love was in our class. We waited in the parking lot for him to exit. She asked him his name, he responded "why?" She said she thought he looked familiar. He said "there's a good reason for that, my name is Mike," and proceeded to walk away.

I was a little disappointed that I didn't get to chat with him for a minute, but I also didn't want to bother him. However, it was neat to relay the story to my father a lifelong Beach Boys fan, who without him, I'm not sure I would have ever even known of Mike Love.

Moral of the story, Mike Love's yoga skills "Need A Mess of Help To Stand Alone."

PS I got a glance at his license plate, and yes it contains the word Love.

My fiancee and I have yet to settle on a song choice to dance to at our wedding. However, I did manage to convince her to narrow it down to "Only With You" Holland version, or "Forever" acapella Hawthorne version. It's honestly a toss up from here.

"Only With You"seems to be the more tender, wedding dance type of song. But the acapella version of "Forever" certainly has its moments...

We can't decide, what do you fellow fanatics think?

No Surfin' Today.... kind of a morbid song! It's interesting to hear songs like No Surfin' Today, Last Kiss, and  Dead Man's Curve...

I am a fan of this song and I love the way Denny sings it. But what was the purpose of calling out the Four Seasons at the end? I can imagine there were some comparisons of Brian and Frankie Valli and their similar sounding falsetto's. Was there ever any real rivalry?

I think I can salvage this thread by asking a totally fresh question and putting a whole new spin on the subject:

Whose fault was it that it didn't come out in 1967?

David Marks? Evil

Maybe the strings, & the towering round section...?  Also lyrics: "I may not always love you" & "Our sweet love won't last forever" ??

I believe the correct lyric is "Could last forever."

Regardless, I don't hear the GOK connection. I think this song stands amazingly well on its own.

This song makes me happy. Any information or history on it is greatly appreciated.

I hope I didn't ruffle any feathers... Sad

I take it this subject has been beat to death already. The reason I was asking was because I came across it listed as the track title to an instrumental piece. I've never heard the piece before and have no idea what it was intended for.

What's the deal with this song? I haven't seen much, if any discussion of it. Was it meant to end up on Smile?

If Mike Love had such a problem with the SMiLE album, how on earth could he have been comfortable releasing Smiley Smile in it's place? We are all familiar with story of him questioning the meaning of the Cabinessence lyrics. Wouldn't he be equally as concerned releasing an album full of song fragments? (Side note: I think the album is great and consider it among their best.)

I guess that's what makes the whole SMiLE period that much more interesting to me. It appears they were close to releasing what potentially could have been they're greatest musical accomplishment and they scrapped the whole thing and released an album full of 90 second fragments and rough takes. What was Mike Love's take on Smiley Smile vs SMiLE??

Long time lurker, first time posterÖ

Guess Iíve always been a Beach Boys fan. My dad often played their albums when I was growing up. I discovered Pet Sounds 3 years ago. Being 21 and out of my parents house for the first time, across the state in a different city, in a new relationship with a girl, I could totally relate to that album. I was blown away that I could so easily relate to concepts that were written about forty years ago. I guess I was surprised that an album my Dad probably bought when he was 15 is still relevant. I could go on and on, but itís all been said before. I quickly snatched up copies of Beach Boys albums and eventually ended up with their entire catalogue. Iím a big fan and kinda like the idea that a lot of the Beach Boysí material has gone unnoticed by the mass public. Itís almost like I belong to a small group of people that know something the rest of the world doesnít. And that makes being a fan that much better.

Now that Iíve gotten that out of the way, I need some help coming up a Beach Boys related vanity plate for my newly acquired 66 Volkswagen. Iíve been thinking and thinking, and canít come up with anything. 7 letters, something obscure so that only true fans would get it.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help!
